--> 99:59:59.999 empty of life. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But my parents taught me to see 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the wild life all around us, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The hawks, the eagles, the tortoises. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 One time when we were staying up at camp, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We found a baby scorpion with its sting around, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I remember thinking how cool it was 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that something could be both so cute 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and also so dangerous. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 After college, I moved to California, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I started working on a number of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 environmental campaigns. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I got involved in hoping to save 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the state's last ancient redwood forest. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And blocking a proposed radioactive waste 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 repository set for the desert. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And surely after I turned 30, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I decided that I wanted to dedicate 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a significant amount of life to solving 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 climate change. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I was worried that global warming would 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 end up destroying many of the natural 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 environments that people had worked 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so hard to protect. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I thought the technical solution were 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 pretty straight forward, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 solar panels on every roof, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 electric cars in the drive way, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that the main obstacles were political. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And so I hoped to organize a coalition 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of the countries biggest labor unions 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and biggest environmental groups. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Our proposal was for a 300 billion dollar 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in renewables. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And the idea was not only we would prevent 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 climate change but, we would also create 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 millions of new jobs in a very fast 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 growing high tech sector. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Our efforts really paid off in 2007, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when then presidential candidate 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Barack Obama embraced our vision. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And between 2009 and 2015, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the US invested a 150 billion dollars 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in renewables and other kinds of clean tac. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But right away, we started to encounter 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 some problems. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So first of all, the electricity from 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 solar roof tops in some costs about twice 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as much as the electricity from solar farms. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And both solar farms and wind farms 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 require a cover of pretty significant 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 amount of land with 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 solar panels and wind turbines, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And also building very big transmission lines 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to bring all that electricity from the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 country side into the city. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Both of those things were often very 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 strongly resisted by local communities, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as well as by conservation biologists who 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 were concerned about the impacts on 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 wild birds species and other animals. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, there was a lot of other people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 working on technical solutions at the time 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 One of the big challenges of course is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 just the intermediacy of solar and wind. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They only generate electricity about 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 10 - 30 % of the time during most of the year 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But, Some of the solutions that were 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 being proposed were to convert hydroelectric 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 dams into gigantic batteries. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The idea was that when the sun was shining 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the wind was blowing, you would pump 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the water uphill, stored for later and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 then when you needed electricity you run 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it over the turbines. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In terms of wild life, some of these 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 problems just didn't seem like 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a significant concern. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, when I learned that house cats 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 killed billions of birds every year. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it put into perspective that hundreds of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 thousands of birds that are rather killed 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 by wind turbines. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Basically seemed to me at the time that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 most if not all of the problems of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 scaling up solar and wind could be solved 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 through more technological innovation. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But as the years went by, these problems 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 persisted, and in many cases grew worse. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, California is a state that is really 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 committed to renewable energy. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But we still haven't converted many of our 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 hydroelectric dams into big batteries. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Some of the problems are just geographic, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It is just, you have to have a very 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 particular kind of formation to build 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and do that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And even in those cases, it's quite 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 expensive to make those conversions. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Other challenges are just that, there is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 other uses for water like irrigation, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And maybe this is the most significant 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 problem is just that, In California, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The water in our rivers and reservoirs 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is growing increasingly scarce and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 unreliable due to climate change. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In term of the situation of reliability, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As a consequence of it, we have actually 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 had to stop the electricity coming from 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the solar farms into the cities because 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there are just have been too much of it 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 at times, or, We have been starting to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 pay out neighboring states as Arizona to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 take that solar electricity, The 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 alternative is to suffer from blowouts of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the grid. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And in turns out that, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when it comes to birds and cats, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Cats don't kill eagles, Eagles kill cats. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What cats kill are the small common 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 sparrows and jays and robins, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Birds that are not endangered and not at 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 risk of going to extinct. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What do kill eagles and another big birds 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 like the skite, as well as owls, and condors. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And other threatened endangered species 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are wind turbines. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In fact, they are one of the most 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 significant threats to those big birds 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 species that we have. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We just haven't been introducing the air 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 space with many other objects like we have 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 wind turbines over the last several years. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And in terms of solar, you know, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 building a solar farm is not like building 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 any other kind of farm, you have to clear 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the whole area of wild life. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so, this is a picture of one third of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 one of the biggest solar farms in 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 California called ivanpah. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In order to build this, they had to clear 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the whole area of desert tortoises. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 literally, pulling desert tortoises and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 their babies out of borrows, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 putting them on the back of pickup trucks 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and transporting them to captivity where 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 many of them ended up dying. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And currently, the current estimates are 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that about 6 thousand birds are 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 killed every year. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Actually, catching on fire above the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 solar farms and bulging to their death. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Over time, it gradually struck me that, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there was really no amount of technological 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 innovation that was gonna make the sun 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 shine more regularly or wind blow more 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 reliably. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In fact, you could make solar panel 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 cheaper, you can make wind turbines bigger 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But, sunlight and wind are just really 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 dilute fuels, and in order to produce 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 significant amount of electricity, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you just have to cover a very large land 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 mass with them. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In other words, all of the major problems 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with renewables aren't technical, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They are natural. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Well, dealing with all of this unreliability 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the big environmental impacts obviously 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 comes that a pretty high economic cost. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You know, we have been hearing a lot 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about how solar panels and wind turbines 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 have come down in cost in recent years. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But that cost has been significantly 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 out waid by just the challenges of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 immigrating all of that unreliable power 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 on to the grid. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Just take fringe since what happened 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in California. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 At the period in which solar panels have 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 come down in price very significantly 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and same with the wind. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We have seen our electricity crisis go up 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 5 times more than the rest of the country 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and it is not unique to us. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You can see the same phenomenon 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 happen in Germany. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Which is really the world's leader in 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 solar, wind and other renewable technologies 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 their price has increased 50 percent 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 during their big renewable energy push. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now,You might think.. well 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 dealing with climate changes just gonna 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 require that we all pay more for energy, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's what I used to think. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But, consider the case of France, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 France actually gets twice as much if its 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 electricity from clean zero emissions 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 sources than does Germany. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And yet, France pays half as much.. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 almost half as much for its electricity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 How can that be? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We might have already anticipated the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 answer, France gets most of its electricity 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 from nuclear power, That's 75 percent 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in total, and nuclear just ends up being 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a lot more reliable, generating power, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for about 90% of the year. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We see this phenomenon 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 show up at global level. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, for example, there has been a natural 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 experiment over the last 40 years, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or even more than that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And in terms of the deployment of nuclear 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the deployment of solar, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You can see that, at a little bit higher 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 cost, we got about half as much electricity 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 from solar and wind than we 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 did from nuclear. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Well, What does all this 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 mean for going forward. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I think one of the most significant 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 findings today is this one. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Had Germany spend 580 billion dollars 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 on nuclear instead of renewables? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It would already be getting a 100% of its 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 electricity from clean energy sources and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 all of its transportation energy. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now I think, you might be wondering and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it is quite reasonable to ask, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Is nuclear power safe? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And what do you do with the waste? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Well those are very reasonable questions, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Turns out that there has been scientific 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 studies of this going for over 40 years. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is just the most recent study that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was done by the prestigious british 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 medical journal and says find the nuclear 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 power is the safest. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It is easy to understand why, according 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to the world's health organization, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 About 7 million people die annually 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 from air pollution and nuclear 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 plants don't emit that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As a result, the climate scientist 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 James Hansen looked out and he calculated 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that nuclear power has already saved 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 almost 2 million lives today. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Turns out that even wind energy is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 more deadly than nucleur. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is a photograph taken of two 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 workers in the flames. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, what about environmental inmpact? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Well, I think a really easy way to think 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about it is that uranium fuel which is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 what we use to power nuclear plants 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is just really energy dense. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 About the same amount of uranium as this 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Rubik's cube can power all of the energy 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that you need in your entire life. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As a consequence, you just don't need that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 much land in order to produce the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 significant amount of electricity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Here we can compare the solar farm I just 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 described ivanpah to California's last 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 nuclear plant diablo canyon. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It takes 450 times more land to generate 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the same amount of electricity as 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it does from nuclear. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You would need 17 more solar farms like 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 ivanpah in order to generate the same 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 output as diablo canyon and of course, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it would then be unreliable. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Well, what about the mining and the waste 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the materials that you put? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Well, this has been studied pretty closely 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as well and it just turns out that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 solar requires 17 times more materials 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 than nuclear plants do. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In the form of cement, glass, concrete, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 steel and that includes all the fuel used 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for those nuclear plants. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The consequences that what comes out at 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the end, since that materials through put 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is just not a lot of waste from nuclear. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 All of the waste from the Swiss nuclear 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 program fits into this room. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Nuclear waste is actually the only waste 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 from electricity production that safely 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 contained and internalized. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Every other way of making electricity emits 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the waste into the natural environment 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 either as pollution or as material waste. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We tend to think of solar panels as clean, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but the truth is that there is no plan to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 deal with solar panels at the end of their 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 20 or 25 year life. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 A lot of experts are very concerned that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 solar panels are just gonna be shipped to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Poor countries in Africa or Asia with the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 rest of our electronic wastes frame to be 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 disassembled often exposing people to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 really high levels of toxic elements 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 including lead, cadmium and chromium. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Elements that... 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because these elements their toxicity 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 never declines over time. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I think we have an intuitive sense nuclear 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is a really powerful strong energy source 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and that sunlight is really dilute and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 diffuse and weak which is why you have to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 spread solar collectors and wind collectors 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 over such a large amount of land. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Maybe that's why nobody was surprised when 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the recent science fiction remake of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 blade runner, the film opens a very dark 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 dystopian scene where California deserts 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 have been entirely paved with solar farms. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 All of which I think raises a really 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 uncomfortable question. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In the effort to try to save the climate, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are we destroying the environment? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Well, the interesting thing is that over 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the last several hundred years, human 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 beings been actually trying to move away
