How to Tune Your Guitar To Double Drop D Tuning (Guitar Lesson ES-022)

  • 0:05 - 0:08
Hi, How you doing? Justin here,
today I'm going to show you-
  • 0:08 - 0:12
how to get you guitar into Double Drop D tuning little bit-
  • 0:12 - 0:15
more common on the acoustic guitar, but works on electric guitar great as well,
  • 0:15 - 0:20
very very simple tuning again, double drop D means that
  • 0:20 - 0:23
we are tuning the two outside strings- the 1st string and the 6th string
  • 0:23 - 0:28
down to a D, they are normally at E, so, both strings are gonna go
  • 0:28 - 0:32
down 1 tone, now to do that we're gonna play the
  • 0:32 - 0:37
open 4th string and play the 6th string
  • 0:37 - 0:48
and tune it down until its an octave lower okay? now,
  • 0:48 - 0:51
if you're struggling or you wanna get a little bit more accurate you can use the 12th fret
  • 0:51 - 0:55
of the thickest string will put that string up an octave
  • 0:55 - 1:00
so its the same as the open 4th string
  • 1:00 - 1:04
its a little easier to hear
  • 1:04 - 1:07
okay, now we're gonna tune the thinnest string down a tone
  • 1:07 - 1:10
as well, so we do that again, open 4th string
  • 1:10 - 1:16
    gradually tuned down
  • 1:16 - 1:19
as usual we try and tune up to a note, so now just tune down to it
  • 1:19 - 1:21
tune a little bit lower than you know that it should be back up
  • 1:21 - 1:26
again you can use an octave at the 12th fret of the fourth string
  • 1:26 - 1:32
    that's pretty good, Okay now,
  • 1:32 - 1:35
nearly every time you do an open tuning you get a need to play
  • 1:35 - 1:37
a little bit and do a little bit tweaky, its just a part of the way it is
  • 1:37 - 1:38
    so,
  • 1:38 - 1:42
what you wanna do for a double drop D is play regular D chord, lift-off
  • 1:42 - 1:51
    your second finger
  • 1:51 - 1:56
here we go just had turn up that thinnest string up just a tiny bit
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    there you have it
  • 1:58 - 2:02
that would be a double drop D tuning, very common in acoustic stuff, really really nice
  • 2:02 - 2:06
its kind of common one for the fingerstyle and percussive
  • 2:06 - 2:07
guitar and all that sort of stuff
  • 2:07 - 2:10
I hope you really enjoy whatever song it is that you're going to learn
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    using double drop D
  • 2:12 - 2:16
    take care!!
