  • 32:10 - 32:16
    [applause]
  • 32:16 - 32:22
    Thank you very much.
    Next step is Stefan Weil
  • 32:22 - 32:26
    talking about PalMA and Debian
    in Mannheim.
  • 32:59 - 33:02
    Thanks. Hello and welcome everybody.
    My name is Stefan Weil,
  • 33:02 - 33:03
and I am going to tell you about a
    Debian based freeware development
  • 33:07 - 33:09
    at Mannheim University Library.
  • 33:09 - 33:15
Large parts of our library are located in
    Mannheim Palace,
  • 33:15 - 33:19
and there we transformed a former reading
room into a modern learning center
  • 33:19 - 33:22
which opened in spring last year.
  • 33:22 - 33:27
    This learning center provides different
kinds of places for working in groups,
  • 33:27 - 33:31
and most of them have a large monitor
where the group members can share
  • 33:31 - 33:35
    their presentations and any documents.
  • 33:35 - 33:41
Students bring their own devices -
    laptops, smartphones or tablet computers.
  • 33:41 - 33:45
They should be able to use the team
    monitors by wireless LAN,
  • 33:45 - 33:48
    without any cables.
  • 33:48 - 33:51
    Existing solutions did not match
    our requirements,
  • 33:51 - 34:01
so we wrapped existing technology in a new
web application which we called PalMA.
  • 34:01 - 34:07
The team monitor shows some short
    instructions how to use PalMA
  • 34:07 - 34:14
    (which is an abbreviation of
    "Present and learn in Mannheim").
  • 34:14 - 34:19
Other libraries which adapted PalMA later
have chosen a different name like
  • 34:19 - 34:26
    SPrinT (which stands for
    "Study and present in teams").
  • 34:26 - 34:32
As soon as a user connects to the
PalMA URL, he or she gets a web interface
  • 34:32 - 34:38
which controls all aspects of PalMA:
  • 34:38 - 34:41
This is what the user sees in the browser,
  • 34:41 - 34:45
and in the upper right corner, you
    see the connected group members,
  • 34:45 - 34:54
then the user can show web pages
    in the left lower corner
  • 34:54 - 34:56
    on the team monitor.
  • 34:56 - 35:02
He can upload different kinds of files
(also in the left corner) for displaying
  • 35:02 - 35:04
on the team monitor, or he can use
  • 35:04 - 35:11
screen mirroring of the local display
    on the team monitor.
  • 35:11 - 35:18
The team monitor can show up to
4 different windows at a time
  • 35:18 - 35:21
    by changing the screen layout.
  • 35:21 - 35:28
You see this in the left part:
there are 5 different screen layouts.
  • 35:28 - 35:32
    Each window supports scrolling and
    zooming and other operations
  • 35:32 - 35:37
    via the web interface.
  • 35:37 - 35:40
The web user interface is available
    in several languages,
  • 35:40 - 35:44
    most of them were contributed
    by students of our university.
  • 35:51 - 35:53
Each PalMA monitor is controlled by a
    Debian GNU Linux system
  • 35:55 - 35:57
running a display server, a window
manager, web server and different kinds
  • 35:58 - 36:02
    of viewer applications which are
    started on demand.
  • 36:02 - 36:11
The user runs a web browser and optionally
a VNC server for screen mirroring. Today,
  • 36:11 - 36:19
PalMA is usable in a trusted environment
like a university or private network.
  • 36:19 - 36:26
At least 7 libraries currently use it
    for group working places.
  • 36:26 - 36:30
    Nevertheless we believe that PalMA
    can be improved further
  • 36:30 - 36:40
and that there are more useful
    applications for PalMA.
  • 36:40 - 36:45
    You can find more information
on our website and also on GitHub.
  • 36:45 - 36:51
And I'd be happy to get your feedback or
    new contributions for PalMA.
  • 36:51 - 36:55
Maybe there are also Debian developers
who are willing to support special
  • 36:55 - 36:57
    software for libraries.
  • 36:57 - 37:00
In any case, just drop me an e-mail.
  • 37:00 - 37:02
    Thanks for your attention.
  • 37:02 - 37:10
    [applause]
