    I'm a documentary filmmaker
    based here in Scotland.

    It's a pleasure to be here today
    to celebrate
  • Not Synced
    International Translation Day 2017,
  • Not Synced
    and to talk to you about Amara as well,
  • Not Synced
    which is, of course, a wonderful platform
    for subtitling and translation.
  • Not Synced
    As part of my role as a filmmaker,
  • Not Synced
    subtitling and translation
    is such a pivotal part to what I do.
  • Not Synced
    Specially as I make films,
    and at the moment,
  • Not Synced
    I'm making a film about languages,
    about the subject of language,
  • Not Synced
    including a recent project,
    a feature documentary project
  • Not Synced
    called, "The Colours of the Alphabet",
  • Not Synced
    which I'm going to talk
    a little bit about now,
  • Not Synced
    because subtitling and translation
    have been so pivotal and so fundamental
  • Not Synced
    to how this film is made.
  • Not Synced
    Those in it, those with me on it,
  • Not Synced
    without them I wouldn't be able
    to have made the film.
  • Not Synced
    The film is a feature documentary,
  • Not Synced
    it released last year
    at the Glasglow Festival,
  • Not Synced
    and it's been turned around
    festivals and cinemas around the UK,
  • Not Synced
    and in Europe and Africa, since then.
  • Not Synced
    It's the story of three children
    in a village in Zambia,
  • Not Synced
    in a village called Lwimba.
  • Not Synced
    It's a story of language and politics
    in education, if you want, and childhood.
  • Not Synced
    It follows the children for 12 months
    at their first year of school.
  • Not Synced
    And there's a school in the community,
  • Not Synced
    where the community speaks
    one language, called Soli,
  • Not Synced
    the region and the teacher speak
    another language, called Nyanja,
  • Not Synced
    and they all must learn English,
  • Not Synced
    because English is the only
    official language of Zambia,
  • Not Synced
    despite there being
    72 different languages,
  • Not Synced
    and only less than 2% of the population
    speak English at home.
  • Not Synced
    So, of course, it's a film about
    this political dynamic,
  • Not Synced
    but at the same time, it's a film
    about childhood, and it's funny,
  • Not Synced
    and it'a film that, hopefully,
    we can all relate to at times,
  • Not Synced
    and it reminds us of those days
    at school and their difficulties,
  • Not Synced
    but of course,
  • Not Synced
    for someone that is going to school
    in a different language completely,
  • Not Synced
    these difficulties are really highlighted
    and exasperated, if you want.
  • Not Synced
    But within the filmmaking process,
    subtitling and translation is fundamental.
  • Not Synced
    We used multicolored subtitles in the film
  • Not Synced
    to represent the changes
    in the different languages
  • Not Synced
    that are going on in the classroom,
    and somewhere like Zambia.
  • Not Synced
    This multilingualism is incredible,
    it's very impressive, but of course,
  • Not Synced
    conveying it to a non-indigenous
    African-language-speaking-audience
  • Not Synced
    is often difficult,
    and it's often not taken as a priority.
  • Not Synced
    But for us it was a priority,
  • Not Synced
    so we used a creative approach
    to subtitling, if you want, in the film,
  • Not Synced
    that you can see in the teaser
    at the end of this video.
  • Not Synced
    Soli, one of the languages, is orange,
    has orange subtitling,
  • Not Synced
    Nyanja has green subtitling,
    Bemba has pink subtitling,
  • Not Synced
    and English has white subtitling.
  • Not Synced
    And this technique has been able to foster
    more conversation, and hopefully,
  • Not Synced
    a greater understanding
    about this multilingualism that exists,
  • Not Synced
    this beautiful multilingualism that exists
    and the complexities and the skills,
  • Not Synced
    which so many people across the continent
    embrace this.

    And I suppose,
    within the documentary more broadly,
  • Not Synced
    subtitling and translation
    is so important, and my team --
  • Not Synced
    and my team for this film
    is what I talk about.
  • Not Synced
    My team of subtitlers
    and translators in Zambia,
  • Not Synced
    Suwilanji Ngambi, Peter Lupiya,
    and Brighton Lubasi were so important,
  • Not Synced
    and without them
    I wouldn't be able to make the film.
  • Not Synced
    And also my team in the UK,
    Elena Zini and those in Screen Language,
  • Not Synced
    who helped to bring the film
    to international audiences,
  • Not Synced
    and creating
    foreign language versions of the film.
  • Not Synced
    But more generally,
    a documentary film having translation
  • Not Synced
    and translators that work seriously
    to approach it,
  • Not Synced
    to understand the importance
    of representing someone,
  • Not Synced
    and that language can be misconstrued,
  • Not Synced
    and a message stands a translation
    is taken seriously is so important.
  • Not Synced
    I think documentary filmmaking
    provides a specific case sometimes,
  • Not Synced
    because people and the film
    that an audience can see and hear
  • Not Synced
    are real people before and after the film,
  • Not Synced
    so their accurate representation
    is so important,
  • Not Synced
    and their understanding of them
    as people is so important.
  • Not Synced
    I think translation and subtitling
    can do a wonderful job there
  • Not Synced
    to help audiences around the world
  • Not Synced
    experience different languages
    and cultures, but also, at the same time,
  • Not Synced
    understand people
    in the best way possible.
  • Not Synced
    I also want to mention a new project
    that we're working on
  • Not Synced
    around "The Colours of the Alphabet",
  • Not Synced
    but the release of
    "The Colours of the Alphabet"
  • Not Synced
    in early next year across Africa,
  • Not Synced
    where it'll be broadcasted into
    49 different countries with Afridocs.
  • Not Synced
    And as part of the broadcast
    we're working with Amara
  • Not Synced
    to create 25 indigenous language
    versions of the film.
  • Not Synced
    It's a really exciting project for us
  • Not Synced
    because, of course,
    we want the film to travel across Africa,
  • Not Synced
    is where the film is made,
  • Not Synced
    is where, hopefully,
    the film speaks to a lot of audiences.
  • Not Synced
    But, at the same time,
  • Not Synced
    it's important that the film
    is seen in the languages of the audience,
  • Not Synced
    that is the [ ] of the film,
  • Not Synced
    but we also want people to be able
    to understand it in their terms.
  • Not Synced
    So, we're going to be working
    in the next months
  • Not Synced
    with indigenous subtitlers and translators
  • Not Synced
    to create 25 different language versions.
  • Not Synced
    We're going to be offering them
    the opportunity to train and work with us,
  • Not Synced
    and at the end of the day,
  • Not Synced
    for people to help to translate
    and subtitle this film,
  • Not Synced
    and hopefully, foster what could be
  • Not Synced
    one of the first Africa-wide
    film translation network.
