One of the key [br]components of how that, 0:01:02.519,0:01:06.519 you know, how ADD affects me is that[br]I have a slower processing speed. 0:01:06.519,0:01:11.256 So while my reading comprehension is[br]strong, 0:01:13.002,0:01:16.151 my processing speed affects my [br]writing speed so I'm not always 0:01:16.151,0:01:20.151 able to produce a paragraph in a [br]timely manner. So, we often 0:01:20.151,0:01:24.151 had problems in English class. This[br]was in tenth grade and 0:01:24.151,0:01:28.651 the expectation was that we would be[br]able to write a paragraph in half-hour. 0:01:28.802,0:01:32.802 And often times I would need double[br]amount of time. I would need an hour. 0:01:32.802,0:01:36.292 And sometimes I wouldn't even be able[br]to finish one simple paragraph 0:01:36.292,0:01:37.492 in an hour. 0:01:38.263,0:01:42.263 And I remember my English instructor,[br]at the time, 0:01:43.023,0:01:45.925 after class when I sort of approached her[br]and said, 0:01:45.925,0:01:49.275 "Uhm, hey. Not withstanding the[br]original time. I wasn't 0:01:49.275,0:01:52.861 really able to finish my paragraph."[br]And I remember she looked at me 0:01:52.861,0:01:57.682 incredulous and said to me,[br]"If you can't even write a paragraph, 0:01:57.682,0:02:01.682 a simple paragraph in one hour,[br]I don't know what to tell you. 0:02:02.899,0:02:08.449 So, I remember that moment. I[br]also remember later on 0:02:08.449,0:02:12.449 when I was preparing for her AP Exams.[br]This also happened in high school. 0:02:12.449,0:02:17.899 This was my junior year. I was taking[br]an AP World History class 0:02:18.864,0:02:23.464 And I remember that I approached my [br]instructor, already knowing on my own 0:02:23.464,0:02:27.334 'cause I had already had plenty of[br]experience advocating for myself since 0:02:27.334,0:02:31.684 I was a child. I already knew that[br]all standardized testing 0:02:31.738,0:02:35.458 had a process for requesting [br]accommodations. 0:02:35.458,0:02:39.458 So, I remember approaching my AP[br]World History Exam and- 0:02:39.458,0:02:43.548 I meant, my AP World History teacher[br]and explaining to him 0:02:43.548,0:02:49.028 that I was registered with disability[br]resources, that I had a documented 0:02:49.028,0:02:53.028 disability and that these were[br]the particular accommodations I needed 0:02:53.028,0:02:55.568 time and a half. It was a very common [br]accommodation. 0:02:57.074,0:03:01.074 And I remember him telling me, "I don't [br]have a problem providing you 0:03:01.074,0:03:05.274 classroom accommodations. I'm just not[br]sure that 0:03:06.644,0:03:10.644 that extended time is provided on the[br]AP Exam." And I was just 0:03:10.644,0:03:14.644 flabbergasted that an instructor would[br]actively misinform me that way 0:03:14.644,0:03:18.644 because even I knew at the tender age[br]of, I don't know, sixteen! 0:03:19.340,0:03:23.340 that ATS always provided a process[br]for requesting 0:03:23.340,0:03:27.340 accommodation. So, I was stunned[br]that an adult felt that he could 0:03:27.340,0:03:31.340 just misinform me that way. And I[br]know 0:03:31.340,0:03:35.340 that misinforming me not necessarily[br]with a negative intent, but he 0:03:35.354,0:03:39.354 genuinely had no notion of the[br]process. And 0:03:40.017,0:03:44.017 yeah. So, it's un-willful misinformation, [br]but 0:03:45.123,0:03:49.123 the effect is similar. Because imagine[br]had he said something like that 0:03:49.123,0:03:53.123 to a student who had no idea how[br]to request accommodations. 0:03:53.337,0:03:58.337 You know, how to attain an [br]evaluation to substantiate 0:03:58.337,0:04:02.337 the need for accommodations. So[br]it's just a lot of misinformation 0:04:05.736,0:04:09.346 Enabled with ignorance, not so much[br]malice. 0:04:09.346,0:04:13.266 But just the complete lack of information[br]out there just really compromises 0:04:13.266,0:04:16.376 student's ability to advocate for[br]themselves 0:04:18.595,0:04:22.595 In my personal work with the[br]disability rights 0:04:22.595,0:04:26.035 community because I worked two[br]and a half years at a disability 0:04:26.035,0:04:28.875 rights organization called Autistic[br]Self Advocacy Network 0:04:29.417,0:04:33.417 and meeting a lot of people my age 0:04:34.693,0:04:38.343 a lot of students don't find out that [br]they have a diagnosis until much later 0:04:38.343,0:04:42.343 in life. Once they start noticing, picking[br]up on their own symptoms they seek 0:04:42.343,0:04:46.343 out individually supports.
