One Minute Changes (Guitar Lesson IM-142) How to play IF Stage 4

  • 0:11 - 0:13
    Hi, how're ya doing?
    Justin here.
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    Welcome to IM-142,
  • 0:15 - 0:19
which is the one minute chord changes,
    for Foundation 4.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    Now, I'm pretty sure,
you know the drill by now,
  • 0:21 - 0:23
where you're going to be changing out chords
    as fast as we can,
  • 0:23 - 0:25
between chords that we already know,
  • 0:25 - 0:27
and chords that we're just learning.
  • 0:27 - 0:31
Now, I've got a suggested five chord changes
that you might like to start off with,
  • 0:31 - 0:33
but make sure that you remember,
  • 0:33 - 0:35
if there is any that you find easy,
  • 0:35 - 0:39
you should substitute them with some changes
    that you find really difficult,
  • 0:39 - 0:43
    because you get best,
if you practice what you can't do,
  • 0:43 - 0:45
and don't practice what you can.
  • 0:45 - 0:49
    Ok, let's get to a close-up
and check out my suggested changes.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
The first of my suggested changes
  • 0:52 - 0:56
is between an A major chord,
    using an E shape,
  • 0:56 - 1:02
and an E7 chord using an A shape.
  • 1:02 - 1:04
This is a very common chord movement,
  • 1:04 - 1:09
    . . .
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    and I don't think you'll have
    too much trouble with it.
  • 1:13 - 1:15
My second chord change suggestion is here
  • 1:15 - 1:20
    a G minor 7 to a C minor 7 chord.
  • 1:20 - 1:23
Now, both of these require quite strong barres,
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    particularly the G minor 7,
that's quite far down the neck,
  • 1:26 - 1:27
you might get that second finger over,
  • 1:27 - 1:31
to give yourself a little bit of support
    if you need it,
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    to a C minor 7.
  • 1:33 - 1:34
If you find it really difficult down here,
  • 1:34 - 1:36
you could move it up the neck, to say,
  • 1:36 - 1:39
    a Bminor7 to an Eminor7.
  • 1:39 - 1:40
    Up to you.
  • 1:40 - 1:43
I think doing it at G is a good kind of strength builder.
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    So, sitting there,
  • 1:45 - 1:48
should have the chords nice and clear by now,
  • 1:48 - 1:53
    and making those chord changes
    as fast as you can.
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    My third chord change
    that I'd recommend would be,
  • 1:56 - 2:02
    Bb7 to an Eb7.
  • 2:02 - 2:05
Both, again, very very common chords
    to be changing between.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    Nothing too difficult here, really.
  • 2:08 - 2:12
    It's just getting used
to the two dominant 7 chord shapes,
  • 2:12 - 2:14
and making sure your barre is strong enough,
  • 2:14 - 2:18
to get all of those notes ringing out nice.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    Fourth recommended change is,
  • 2:22 - 2:25
G major, using an E shape,
  • 2:25 - 2:29
    to a B7, using an A shape.
  • 2:29 - 2:33
    . . .
  • 2:33 - 2:34
Interesting kind of quick change here
  • 2:34 - 2:36
because you have to kind of move backwards
  • 2:36 - 2:40
and moving backwards with the barres
are always a little bit more interesting than not.
  • 2:40 - 2:45
So G, backwards we go to the 7th.
  • 2:45 - 2:48
    Here, sometimes my fingers
kind of a little bit flat like that.
  • 2:48 - 2:50
Sometimes, it's a bit easier to get the pressure on,
  • 2:50 - 2:53
when the fingers are kind of slightly angled.
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    Wouldn't say it's a particularly a good habit.
  • 2:55 - 2:56
They should probably be a bit square on,
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    but if they are
a little bit late over sometimes,
  • 2:58 - 3:01
particularly when you've just gone backwards,
  • 3:01 - 3:03
I think that's kind of acceptable,
  • 3:03 - 3:07
so long as the chord sounds good.
  • 3:08 - 3:10
And the 5th recommended change would be this :
  • 3:10 - 3:14
Ab minor to a Db major.
  • 3:14 - 3:20
    . . .
  • 3:20 - 3:23
Just to make sure that we keep on working on,
  • 3:23 - 3:26
uh, A shape major barre chord change a bit as well,
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    because that's generally
the toughest one for most people,
  • 3:29 - 3:31
so, you don't want to leave it out altogether.
  • 3:32 - 3:34
Well, I'll leave you to it.
  • 3:34 - 3:36
All you have to do now is add your practice.
  • 3:36 - 3:39
    Just please don't forget,
if there's any that you find really difficult,
  • 3:39 - 3:42
    if you're still struggling
with the A major type barre chord,
  • 3:42 - 3:44
you might want to chuck some more of those in there,
  • 3:44 - 3:46
if there's some from the list that I've given you
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    that you'd find easier,
  • 3:48 - 3:49
so that's the big trick here.
  • 3:49 - 3:52
    Please, don't forget,
    practice the hard stuff.
  • 3:52 - 3:53
    It'll make you better.
  • 3:53 - 3:54
    Take care.
  • 3:54 - 3:56
I'll see you for another lesson real soon.
    Bye-bye.
