Practice Schedule 5 (Guitar Lesson IM-159) How to play IF Stage 5
-
0:11 - 0:16Hi, how ya doin'? Justin here.
Welcome to IM-159. -
0:16 - 0:20Which is the Practice Routine for Foundation 5.
-
0:20 - 0:24What we've got here is 5 minutes of your Triad practice.
-
0:24 - 0:27Which is making sure you memorize where the triads are,
-
0:27 - 0:31where the root notes are,
and working out the string groupings 2,3,4 -
0:31 - 0:35and the minors on 2,3,4 and then practicing them.
-
0:35 - 0:38Then you've got 5 minutes on your triad chord changes
-
0:38 - 0:40so bouncing around, up and down the neck,
-
0:40 - 0:43trying to get those triad shapes as fast as you can,
-
0:43 - 0:46making sure that you remember
what string the root note's on -
0:46 - 0:51and remembering to look at the root note
before you try and change to the chord. -
0:51 - 0:55That's the trick for being able to do these kind of
jumping all over the neck kind of changes. -
0:55 - 1:00We've then got 5 minutes of our usual Major Scale
with the metronome. -
1:00 - 1:02Hopefully you're getting the speed up
a little bit more now. -
1:02 - 1:05You should be feeling really confident
with your alternate picking, -
1:05 - 1:08and really, you know,
just working on the speed, that's it. -
1:08 - 1:13Remember the speed, the point of the speed rather,
is to synchronize the two hands, -
1:13 - 1:15that's the real reason that we're doing that stuff,
-
1:15 - 1:18it's not really about you playing the scale fast.
-
1:18 - 1:20It's about getting a good co-ordination
between the two hands. -
1:20 - 1:24We've then got 5 minutes of Major Scale improvising,
-
1:24 - 1:29so I'm really hoping that you're letting your ear control
the way that you play now, -
1:29 - 1:32so not just relying on muscle memory,
-
1:32 - 1:34you're hopefully incorporating your one finger solos,
-
1:34 - 1:38and a bit of that melodic patterns,
but still letting your ear be the boss. -
1:38 - 1:44Next up we got 10 minutes of the J.U.S.T.I.N. Training,
-
1:44 - 1:47and/or transcribing songs on your own.
-
1:47 - 1:51I'm really hoping at this stage,
that you're doing plenty of your own transcribing, -
1:51 - 1:54because that is the key
to becoming a good guitar player. -
1:54 - 1:56I can't emphasise it to you strongly enough.
-
1:56 - 2:01Learning songs on your own
is the thing that will make you good. -
2:01 - 2:02And a failure to do that,
-
2:02 - 2:05to ignore my advice and not do any transcribing,
-
2:05 - 2:10means that you probably won't ever become
a really confident guitar player. -
2:10 - 2:12You might be able to kinda play the notes,
-
2:12 - 2:14you'll be able to play some songs,
-
2:14 - 2:17but there'll be always that thing missing.
-
2:17 - 2:19Lotsa times I meet guitar players
-
2:19 - 2:20and they come for a lesson, they go
-
2:20 - 2:23well I can do this, and I can do this,
but there's something missing. -
2:23 - 2:24And nine times out of ten,
-
2:24 - 2:28the something missing is that
they haven't been doing any transcribing. -
2:28 - 2:30The second half hour we've got,
-
2:30 - 2:34we've got 5 minutes of picked fingerstyle practice.
-
2:34 - 2:37So, either making up
your own pattern and practicing that. -
2:37 - 2:39Or, working on that set pattern that I showed you
-
2:39 - 2:42and/or trying to incorporate it into some tunes,
-
2:42 - 2:45working on kind of making it a strumming pattern,
-
2:45 - 2:48but being able to pick out notes individually.
-
2:48 - 2:50We've got 5 minutes of legato practice.
-
2:50 - 2:55If you're new to legato,
that'll be doing hammer-ons and flickoffs individually. -
2:55 - 2:57If you're cool with that, then,
-
2:57 - 3:00its incorporating it into the Minor Pentatonic
and the Major Scale, -
3:00 - 3:04using legato technique,
that is the hammer-ons and the flickoffs, -
3:04 - 3:05to play the scales up and down,
-
3:05 - 3:07if you're confident with that,
-
3:07 - 3:10you might want to start using some melodic patterns
-
3:10 - 3:13and making sure you incorporate
the legato techniques into that. -
3:13 - 3:15Remember after the Foundation Stage
-
3:15 - 3:18you probably want to start doing
the exercise called the Finger Gym -
3:18 - 3:20which is a real hardcore workout
-
3:20 - 3:22using hammer-ons and flickoffs.
-
3:22 - 3:24We've then got your Rhythm Guitar,
-
3:24 - 3:26so you're working on your chips,
-
3:26 - 3:29spreads, splangs
and your muted strumming. -
3:29 - 3:31Really, really good fun.
-
3:31 - 3:33A very important part of your
Rhythm Guitar development -
3:33 - 3:36is incorporating that stuff into tunes.
-
3:36 - 3:38So when it comes to practicing songs later,
-
3:38 - 3:42don't forget to start using those things
in the real world. -
3:42 - 3:45We've also got now 5 minutes
on the Major Pentatonic. -
3:45 - 3:48Now, we're gonna be covering that more
in future lessons. -
3:48 - 3:51But for now,
just have a bit of a muck around, -
3:51 - 3:53see if you can make sense of it,
-
3:53 - 3:55get used to what it sounds like,
-
3:55 - 3:58and do a little bit of improvising
using that scale, -
3:58 - 4:00because that's probably the best way
to get it into your system. -
4:00 - 4:03The last thing we've got is
10 minutes of repertoire. -
4:03 - 4:05So learning some new songs
-
4:05 - 4:08that are incorporating the techniques
that we've been doing. -
4:08 - 4:10Maybe some stuff that uses the pick fingerstyle,
-
4:10 - 4:14or that uses chips or splangs or spreads
or whatever you like. -
4:14 - 4:18But really making sure
that you learn new songs for every stage. -
4:18 - 4:22And that's it.
That's your practice routine for Foundation Five. -
4:22 - 4:25There's only one lesson left which is Consolidation,
-
4:25 - 4:29but make sure you spend a bit of time
getting all of these new things under your fingers -
4:29 - 4:32before you work on your Consolidation.
-
4:32 - 4:34Take care. See you for another lesson very soon.
-
4:34 - 4:38Bye Bye.
