    The first thing I'm going to tell you

    is that I stutter.

    I've stuttered since I was 3 years old,

    around this age. I know, I'm adorable.

    Stuttering has shaped how I communicate
  • 0:38 - 0:43
    since I was that person right there.

    I began stuttering when I was 3.

    I was talking to my parents about it
  • 1:05 - 1:09
    and they said they weren't that concerned
  • 1:09 - 1:18
    because many kids stutter at that age and
  • 1:18 - 1:26
    they grow out of it when they're 5 or 6.

    I had cousins who stuttered, my brother,
  • 1:30 - 1:41
    my parents; they all grew out of theirs
  • 1:41 - 1:46
    by the time they were around 17.
  • 1:46 - 1:52
    People thought, it's a thing
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    that is happening right now,
  • 1:53 - 1:59
    but it'll go away on its own
  • 1:59 - 2:08
    and that will be the end of that.
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    Well, I'm 32, and it's still here.
  • 2:11 - 2:16
    I guess it's just here to stay.
  • 2:17 - 2:25
    Those who stutter develop coping tools.

    I did... So many things that I did
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    that were kind of odd
  • 2:40 - 2:44
    were because of my stuttering.
  • 2:44 - 2:48
    I would try to conceal it
  • 2:48 - 2:58
    by saying things... Sorry.

    I would try to stay away from situations
  • 3:10 - 3:22
    where I knew that I'd have to talk
  • 3:22 - 3:26
    because I was so terrified of stuttering.

    I'd change words because when you stutter,
  • 3:33 - 3:41
    you are keenly aware of the words
  • 3:41 - 3:46
    that are going to give you some trouble.
  • 3:46 - 3:50
    Before saying the word, I'd quickly
  • 3:50 - 3:53
    think about a different word to say
  • 4:02 - 4:05
    so I wouldn't stutter.
  • 4:05 - 4:16
    I came to know that stuttering and
  • 4:16 - 4:24
    the ways I was coping were taking over
  • 4:24 - 4:31
    both my personal and professional life
  • 4:31 - 4:39
    so I decided to try to face this fear
  • 4:39 - 4:44
    by pursuing small opportunities to speak
  • 4:44 - 4:47
    in front of people.
  • 4:47 - 4:48
    It know it sounds insane
  • 4:48 - 4:57
    but I'm the type of person who,
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    if I'm afraid to swim, I'm going to jump
  • 4:59 - 5:02
    in the deep end and see what happens.
  • 5:02 - 5:06
    Hopefully, I won't drown. [Laughter]

    When I began pursuing public speaking,
  • 5:19 - 5:24
    the views that I had had of communication
  • 5:24 - 5:30
    drastically changed.
  • 5:32 - 5:36
    Communication is supposed to be
  • 5:36 - 5:41
    an act of incredible empathy.
  • 5:42 - 5:48
    The problem is that it definitely isn't.
  • 5:50 - 5:52
    To talk about communication,
  • 5:52 - 5:56
    we have to talk about conversations.
  • 5:58 - 6:05
    The way we approach conversations is bad.
  • 6:07 - 6:19
    That's you, and you come up with
  • 6:19 - 6:25
    this thing that you want to tell people.
  • 6:25 - 6:29
    You have an idea. That's you.
  • 6:29 - 6:35
    That's the thing you want to tell people
  • 6:35 - 6:41
    and you get pumped about this idea.
  • 6:51 - 6:58
    You don't want to brag, but you think that
  • 6:58 - 7:06
    this thing could have legs.
  • 7:06 - 7:19
    You're pretty excited about
  • 7:19 - 7:21
    what you want to share.
  • 7:23 - 7:27
    You think about the idea,
  • 7:29 - 7:35
    about the words you want to use,
  • 7:35 - 7:48
    about how you want others to feel,
  • 7:48 - 7:53
    about how you want to feel as
  • 7:53 - 8:06
    you're explaining the idea.
  • 8:06 - 8:15
    You say it, you're excited, and
  • 8:15 - 8:17
    you expect them to be "wow,
  • 8:17 - 8:19
    that was the best idea
  • 8:19 - 8:23
    that I think I will ever hear in my life",
  • 8:23 - 8:26
    and they don't act like that.
  • 8:26 - 8:28
    They're like, "Okay, great.
  • 8:28 - 8:31
    I have to go to lunch now."
  • 8:31 - 8:36
    You're confused as to why this person
  • 8:36 - 8:45
    isn't as excited as you about this idea
  • 8:45 - 8:50
    that you think is so great.
  • 8:50 - 8:56
    The problem is you don't care about them.
  • 9:01 - 9:02
    You don't want to have
  • 9:02 - 9:07
    a two-way conversation.
  • 9:07 - 9:11
    You just want them to love
  • 9:11 - 9:15
    your idea the way that Kanye loves Kanye.
  • 9:15 - 9:17

    This self-focused approach
  • 9:20 - 9:27
    to communication is a breeding ground for
  • 9:27 - 9:31
    lackluster conversations and it can even
  • 9:31 - 9:34
    cause problems on teams.

    What do you need to do,
  • 9:43 - 9:47
    and how do you fix the problem?
  • 9:47 - 9:49
    You need to think about the other person.
  • 9:52 - 9:58
    You need to be empathetic.

    The reason why is because empathy
  • 10:13 - 10:18
    fuels connection, and if this is true,
  • 10:18 - 10:22
    then empathetic communication is going to
  • 10:22 - 10:26
    drive collaboration.
  • 10:26 - 10:36
    When building teams or products,
  • 10:36 - 10:39
    one of the most important things
  • 10:39 - 10:42
    that has to be positive
  • 10:42 - 10:46
    is the way you collaborate
  • 10:46 - 10:51
    as a collective.
  • 10:51 - 10:55
    This presents a problem.
  • 10:57 - 11:05
    In 2016, the way we collaborate
  • 11:05 - 11:10
    is almost exclusively via
  • 11:10 - 11:15
    glowing screens, software, and text;
  • 11:15 - 11:20
    which is fine, there are benefits
  • 11:20 - 11:26
    to communicating in this way.
  • 11:28 - 11:32
    Teams have said that being able to talk
  • 11:32 - 11:37
    to each other via Slack and Twitter
  • 11:37 - 11:39
    helps sharing.
  • 11:39 - 11:42
    It helps people feel connected
  • 11:42 - 11:46
    and to build common ground.
  • 11:49 - 11:54
    The problem there is that,
  • 11:54 - 11:59
    when you are communicating exclusively
  • 11:59 - 12:14
    via text,
  • 12:14 - 12:21
    the empathy that you must have
  • 12:21 - 12:29
    to connect is oftentimes lost.
  • 12:33 - 12:39
    Technology is extremely helpful
  • 12:39 - 12:43
    but it can't replace the social aspect
  • 12:43 - 12:48
    of face-to-face communication.
  • 12:48 - 12:50
    Here is another truth.
  • 12:50 - 12:58
    Failures of communication can't just be
  • 12:58 - 13:01
    automated away.
  • 13:01 - 13:03
    You have to confront things
  • 13:03 - 13:06
    face-to-face.
  • 13:07 - 13:11
    If you take away the technology,
  • 13:11 - 13:17
    cellphones, computers, software,
  • 13:32 - 13:35
    then what do you have left?
  • 13:35 - 13:38
    You have people.
  • 13:41 - 13:46
    There's a second problem.
  • 13:46 - 13:50
    People hate talking to each other
  • 13:50 - 13:52
    because talking is hard,
  • 13:52 - 13:57
    conversations are difficult, and
  • 13:57 - 14:01
    collaboration is extremely hard.
  • 14:03 - 14:07
    That's why collaboration does fail,
  • 14:07 - 14:12
    it's hard to talk to people sometimes.
  • 14:14 - 14:20
    Let's figure out why collaboration fails.
  • 14:22 - 14:25
    The biggest reasons are that people
  • 14:25 - 14:34
    are afraid of being wrong and
  • 14:34 - 14:38
    concerned they aren't going to be able
  • 14:38 - 14:49
    to communicate their thoughts and
  • 14:49 - 14:53
    opinions in a clear way.
  • 14:58 - 15:01
    The fear of being wrong
  • 15:02 - 15:06
    is the fear of being judged.
  • 15:08 - 15:16
    I can't tell you the times when I've had
  • 15:16 - 15:21
    an idea and wanted to share it,
  • 15:21 - 15:32
    but I was so consumed with the thought of
  • 15:32 - 15:40
    being judged,
  • 15:40 - 15:44
    that I just remained silent.
  • 15:57 - 16:04
    Being misunderstood happens almost daily.
  • 16:07 - 16:14
    You are all highly technical people
  • 16:14 - 16:23
    and you work with non-technical people.
  • 16:23 - 16:27
    Having to explain things can often end up
  • 16:27 - 16:37
    in frustration and irritation,
  • 16:37 - 16:44
    so it's just easier not to collaborate.
  • 16:47 - 16:50
    So how do we fix this?
  • 16:50 - 16:51
    The first thing is
  • 16:51 - 16:55
    that you have to speak up,
  • 16:55 - 17:00
    and encourage the people around you
  • 17:00 - 17:02
    to do the same
  • 17:02 - 17:06
    because silence kills collaboration.
  • 17:08 - 17:17
    Hearing what another person has to say
  • 17:17 - 17:22
    doesn't make your thoughts
  • 17:22 - 17:28
    and opinions any less valid.
  • 17:28 - 17:34
    All it does is enhance conversations.
  • 17:37 - 17:40
    The next thing that you have to do is
  • 17:40 - 17:45
    to think about the person
  • 17:45 - 17:50
    that you are talking to.
  • 17:50 - 17:53
    All of us are on different planes.
  • 17:53 - 18:00
    intellectually, emotionally. That's okay.
  • 18:00 - 18:20
    Speaking to people on their level
  • 18:20 - 18:28
    doesn't compromise your level.
  • 18:34 - 18:46
    Next thing is to think about the speaker.
  • 18:46 - 18:50
    When you're having a conversation where
  • 18:50 - 18:58
    the speaker is struggling while talking,
  • 18:58 - 19:08
    think back to hearing me speak now.
  • 19:08 - 19:12
    I know that it can be incredibly difficult
  • 19:12 - 19:18
    to completely understand what I'm trying
  • 19:18 - 19:26
    to say, and that you have to be patient.
  • 19:26 - 19:30
    You have to really pay attention.
  • 19:34 - 19:41
    When you discuss your ideas
  • 19:41 - 19:48
    from a place of great empathy,
  • 19:48 - 20:00
    and you pay attention to
  • 20:00 - 20:02
    others' ideas
  • 20:02 - 20:04
    from that same place,
  • 20:04 - 20:07
    you are going to create something
  • 20:07 - 20:14
    that is bigger and better than the things
  • 20:14 - 20:20
    you could have created by yourself.
  • 20:22 - 20:26
    That takes vulnerability.
  • 20:26 - 20:40
    It's the vulnerability to embrace silence
  • 20:40 - 20:42
    or discuss the things that are going to be
  • 20:42 - 20:48
    an uncomfortable conversation,
  • 20:48 - 20:50
    and that also takes courage.
  • 20:50 - 20:56
    It takes the courage to listen to people
  • 20:56 - 21:02
    when they are struggling to communicate
  • 21:02 - 21:07
    the things that they're trying to say,
  • 21:07 - 21:13
    and the courage to embrace them
  • 21:13 - 21:19
    being vulnerable to you.
  • 21:19 - 21:25
    To be an empathetic communicator,
  • 21:25 - 21:31
    you need to be courageous,
  • 21:31 - 21:36
    you need to be vulnerable and patient.
  • 21:36 - 21:40
    That's going to be the foundation
  • 21:40 - 21:42
    of a positive and effective
  • 21:42 - 21:44
    team collaboration.

    I really reflected on that.

    I started to wonder which one

    of those two things I fear most.

    I'm still wondering about that,

    but when I was reflecting on that further,
  • 22:47 - 22:49
    I realized that some of the biggest jerks
  • 22:49 - 22:51
    that I've ever known, we're talking
  • 22:51 - 22:55
    about real geniuses but quite often jerks,
  • 22:55 - 22:57
    who do fear being wrong
  • 22:57 - 22:59
    but that don't care at all
  • 22:59 - 23:01
    about being misunderstood.
  • 23:01 - 23:03
    Oftentimes, they deliberately choose
  • 23:03 - 23:07
    their words to ensure they can't be wrong
  • 23:07 - 23:08
    because they're ambiguous,
  • 23:08 - 23:10
    they have many interpretations.
  • 23:10 - 23:12
    They don't care about being misunderstood
  • 23:12 - 23:14
    because they leave it up to the audience
  • 23:14 - 23:16
    to misunderstand them.
  • 23:16 - 23:18
    Maybe I'm being unfair to those people, or
  • 23:18 - 23:19
    maybe they have legitimate reasons for
  • 23:19 - 23:24
    behaving that way, but I'm curious about
  • 23:24 - 23:26
    what you think about this, in terms of
  • 23:26 - 23:28
    the kind of personality that stops caring
  • 23:28 - 23:32
    about whether their audience
  • 23:32 - 23:34
    misunderstands them or not.
  • 23:34 - 23:37
    SHARON: I'm sure we call them sociopaths.
  • 23:37 - 23:38
    [Laughter]
  • 23:38 - 23:41
    They just don't feel, they don't care,
  • 23:41 - 23:44
    so they can live their lives in a way that
  • 23:44 - 23:49
    it doesn't matter if I hurt your feelings
  • 23:49 - 23:53
    because I don't have feelings anyway.
  • 23:53 - 23:59
    In terms of the personality for
  • 23:59 - 24:02
    people who do have feelings,
  • 24:02 - 24:09
    I think they are a lot more thoughtful,
  • 24:09 - 24:13
    and think about what they're going to say.
  • 24:13 - 24:18
    They make sure that the way
  • 24:18 - 24:23
    they communicate is going to be
  • 24:23 - 24:27
    both positive and effective, and
  • 24:27 - 24:32
    it's not going to harm others
  • 24:32 - 24:35
    because that's also really important, too.
  • 24:35 - 24:38
    The way we talk about things,
  • 24:38 - 24:41
    and the way that we say things
  • 24:41 - 24:53
    has an impact on how things are perceived.
  • 24:53 - 25:00
    I think that people who care
  • 25:00 - 25:04
    talk to people in the way that
  • 25:04 - 25:07
    they have to be spoken to.
  • 25:07 - 25:12
    Everybody else who's on the ends,
  • 25:12 - 25:14
    you probably don't want to be talking
  • 25:14 - 25:16
    to them anyway, because they don't care
  • 25:16 - 25:18
    about your feelings.
  • 25:18 - 25:20
    Unless you have to go to work with them.
  • 25:20 - 25:24
    and then... I don't know.
