Lynn Hershman Leeson: Drawing Breath | Art21 "Extended Play"

  • 0:09 - 0:10
    [INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC]
  • 0:20 - 0:23
Drawing for me is a sort of meditation.
  • 0:23 - 0:26
I think everything begins and ends with the drawing.
  • 0:28 - 0:31
Whenever I do a project, I draw it out.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
So, it's kind of a basic language,
  • 0:34 - 0:37
and then I do some things in between.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    It's all about collaging.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
A lot of what I do as being an artist
  • 0:48 - 0:51
is creating a voice for myself
  • 0:52 - 0:55
because I didn't have one for so long.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    In 1965, I got pregnant.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
In the fifth month of my pregnancy,
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    I was having trouble breathing
  • 1:09 - 1:12
and came down with a heart condition
    called cardiomyopathy.
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    I went into heart failure.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
I was under an oxygen tent
    during that pregnancy,
  • 1:19 - 1:20
    in a hospital.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    I was unable to walk
  • 1:23 - 1:26
or to do anything for many, many months.
  • 1:29 - 1:33
    When you are experiencing
    the threat of death,
  • 1:33 - 1:36
you become so aware of time.
  • 1:36 - 1:39
    That's really a gift,
  • 1:39 - 1:41
to become so sick early in my life.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
It made you value the time you had
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    and the fact that you
    can't really waste time.
  • 1:55 - 1:59
Because so much of my illness
    depended on breathing,
  • 1:59 - 2:02
I added the sound as it was getting better
  • 2:02 - 2:04
to a couple of my wax sculptures.
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    [PLAYBACK OF RECORDED BREATHING SOUNDS]
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    [VOICE FROM CASSETTE PLAYER]
    --Oh, there you are.
  • 2:09 - 2:12
--I've been waiting for you all day.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
--I'm so glad that you've come to see me.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    --What's your name?
  • 2:20 - 2:22
I took a night class at UCLA
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    on how you cast wax.
  • 2:26 - 2:30
Since I didn't have anybody else around,
    I cast my face
  • 2:31 - 2:34
and made the wax cast from myself.
  • 2:35 - 2:38
When you're so isolated, you hear more.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    [RECORDED BREATHING SOUNDS]
  • 2:41 - 2:46
After my breath itself, I added
    interaction and dialogue.
  • 2:46 - 2:49
To me, it was sort of like a drawing.
  • 2:49 - 2:52
It was sound that extended into space.
  • 2:52 - 2:54
So that became part of the work.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    In the seventies,
  • 3:01 - 3:05
women artists were just becoming aware of
    how they were made invisible.
  • 3:06 - 3:11
The early challenges were getting somebody
    to show my work,
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    and nobody would.
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    Eventually,
  • 3:15 - 3:19
the University of California at Berkeley
invited three women to have exhibitions
  • 3:19 - 3:21
and I was one of them.
  • 3:21 - 3:23
But they wanted to show only my drawings.
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    I think they thought
    that drawings were safe
  • 3:26 - 3:29
and good draftsmanship and all of that.
  • 3:29 - 3:30
    But along with that,
  • 3:30 - 3:34
I put in a couple of my wax sculptures
    that talked.
  • 3:35 - 3:36
    Within two days,
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    the museum closed the show.
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    They said, "Media isn't art."
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    "Sound isn't art."
  • 3:43 - 3:46
    And they completely closed
    the exhibition down.
  • 3:47 - 3:51
Being rejected and being made invisible by
    the museum system
  • 3:51 - 3:54
    was really the best thing
    that happened to me.
  • 3:55 - 3:59
    The cultural experience of
    having your voice suppressed
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    has made speech, and talking,
  • 4:01 - 4:03
    and having a voice,
  • 4:03 - 4:05
really important in what I do.
