State of Mozilla: Brendan Eich - "Evolving the Web"

  • 0:04 - 0:08
When we do products to touch people to uphold our mission,
  • 0:08 - 0:12
We are not just, you know, implementing the web standards,
  • 0:13 - 0:16
Or doing whatever opens with contributers want. That's part of it
  • 0:17 - 0:20
But, to serve the mission, we have to make well-designed products
  • 0:21 - 0:25
We have to have excellence in design, people have to love using them,
  • 0:25 - 0:26
    They have to be usable,
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    They have to be simple
  • 0:27 - 0:33
And that led with Firefox to this great success taking back the browser market restarting
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    inclined side of the web
  • 0:36 - 0:41
We did things like Add-ons, so if you really couldn't fit into the default user interface for Firefox
  • 0:41 - 0:44
Some complex things that some people wanted, they can make an add-on for it.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
It was almost like apps, ahead of their time
  • 0:48 - 0:51
And that helped this idea of excellent design
  • 0:51 - 0:53
It reaches hundreds and millions of people
  • 0:53 - 0:57
So, that requirement for great design is still with us.
  • 0:58 - 1:03
We also have to do innovative technology or really deep research and development
  • 1:04 - 1:09
In web platform,in what's next in technology, in hardware and software
  • 1:09 - 1:11
In order to keep evolving the web
  • 1:11 - 1:16
So that we don't have a stall out while various
  • 1:16 - 1:21
companies push their proprietary platforms along certain axes that the web can't keep up with
  • 1:21 - 1:25
In general, the web is so big,the developer community is so big that
  • 1:25 - 1:28
if we keep the web innovative, it will prevail
