This video was self-recorded by Bernardo in Saxony. Bernardo speaks Portuguese, a West Iberian Romance language within the Italic branch of the Indo-European language family. Portuguese originated in the Kingdom of Galicia on the Iberian Peninsula, diverging from the other Romance languages as Old Galician or Galician-Portuguese between approximately the 9th and 14th centuries. Portuguese is now the sole official language of Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Angola, and São Tomé and Príncipe, as well as one of the official languages of the European Union. It also has co-official language status in East Timor, Equatorial Guinea and Macau.

As a language of a former colonial power, Portuguese has many creoles in its colonized territories including its most widely spoken creole, Cape Verdean. According to UNESCO, Portuguese is the second fastest growing European language after English, with heavy growth regions in southern Africa and South America. Portuguese is spoken by roughly 10 million people in Portugal, and over 203 million worldwide. Portuguese is a West Iberian Romance language within the Italic branch of the Indo-European language family.
