(Music)
Are you feeling the funk?
Are you feeling the funk?
(Audience) Yes!
David Webb: Put your hands together!
Come on! Come on!
Feel the funk! Feel the funk!
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Yes! Yes! Yes!
We want the funk!
Come on!
Feel it! Are you feeling it?
I can't hear you. Are you feeling it?
(Aud) Yes!
DW: You're feeling it?
(Aud) Yes!
DW: This section? Are you feeling it?
(Aud) Yes!
DW: All right, all right.
In the 1960s, there
was a movement in the South
to migrate to the North
for jobs, the industry.
At that time, my family moved
from Milan, Tennessee, to Dayton, Ohio,
to discover a better way of life.
And that's when I was introduced
to funk music at a very early age.
At that time, young people were focusing
on their art form in music in schools.
But I was in the fifth grade,
at Jefferson Elementary School,
(Laughter)
and learning to play an instrument
for the very first time.
And I wanted to play the drums.
So I went to my music teacher
and asked her, "Can I play
the drums in the band class?"
But instead, she gave me a flutophone.
(Laughter)
She felt
that the drums would be
too difficult for me to learn.
And she said I could't keep a beat.
So after school, I ran home
to show my instrument
to my mother and father,
the flutophone.
(Laughter)
You know, my mother
was a little disappointed.
She knew my dreams
were to play the drums.
That day, that moment,
I learned something.
My mother
was a "drug" addict.
She drug me to music class,
(Laughter)
she drug me to drum corps
for band rehearsal.
She drug me to church.
She drug me anywhere
possible so I can learn how to play
an instrument.
(Laughter)
But then in the early 1970s,
there was a group out of Dayton, Ohio,
called the Ohio Players.
(Cheers)
(Applause)
I used to listen to songs like
"Pain," "Funky Worm,"
"Skin Tight," and "Fire."
and right then,
I knew I wanted to be a drummer.
Then the funk explosion took off
in Dayton, Ohio for me,
making the "Gem City"
the funk capital of the world.
(Applause)
But there were other innovators
who influenced me
on my journey for
knowledge for funk music.
In Augusta Georgia, it was James Brown,
who combined the music genres
of rhythm and blues,
jazz, and soul to an art form,
which we know now as funk music.
And Detroit, Michigan, George Clinton.
And also, in Memphis, Tennessee,
Isaac Hayes.
And on the West Coast,
in San Francisco,
influencing the messages of family
and positive culture,
his name was Sylvester Stewart,
who later became known
as his band as ...
Sly and the Family Stone.
These gentlemen, among others,
planted the seed of funk music
as a creative art form in Dayton, Ohio.
And they, too, influenced
my career as a professional drummer.
After so many years,
funk music became a lost art form,
fallen to the wayside
like art and music classes,
no longer offered in public schools
until
the Arts Education Partnership,
with the President's
Committee on the Arts and Humanities
commenced a study to examine the impact,
and why and how
a young person like me,
at thirteen years old was changed ...
due to the art experience.
Evidence demonstrates that children
with a high level of art participation
outperform art-poor students
by virtually every measure.
The study, "Champions of Change,"
found much evidence
that learning in the arts
helps develop habits
that will support other discipline areas
and it can often reach at-risk students
when other discipline areas cannot.
The arts provide young people
authentic learning experiences
that engages their minds,
their hearts, their bodies.
Art education helps students to learn.
It can enhance creativity,
self-discipline,
and the skills and confidence necessary
to meet the challenging encounters
in my life,
as a student,
and as an adult.
So, let's do a demonstration, OK?
on how to keep a funky beat
and keep it on the one.
(Laughter)
It's that funk music bridges the gap
between our racism.
For example, everybody remember
KC and the Sunshine Band?
Y'all remember that?
OK! Yeah! Yeah!
Remember the group, Average White Band?
and a group right here
out of Ohio called Wild Cherry.
Y'all remember "Play That
Funky Music, White Boy" right?
Good, OK. Let`s do a little demonstration.
So let's do a random song,
see if you know this.
If I go, "There she was
just walking down the street," you say,
(Aud) Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do.
DW: Wow, then that's great.
(Laughter)
So, let's do this.
Let's put a beat to that, OK?
because that's done in a two-four, OK?
So I'm going to count it off,
and I want you to help me to sing it, OK?
So are y'all ready?
Here we go.
One, two, one, two, three, four
"There she goes just
a walking down the street singin'
(Aud) Do wah diddy
diddy dum diddy do."
DW: One more time,
"There she goes just
a walking down the street singin'
(Aud) Do wah diddy
diddy dum diddy do."
DW: Good, good, good.
Now, funk music
is on the one and the three.
OK? So let's take a bit of ...
"Play that Funky Music
White Boy" by Wild Cherry
Y'all know that right?
Let's take it from the part
where they go,
and if you know it help me out,
"And they were dancin' and singin'
and movin' to the groovin',
and just like it hit me
somebody turned around and shouted,
(Aud) Play that funky music white boy
DW: Oh, y'all are good!
(Laughter)
Can we put a beat to that?
Let's put a beat to that.
Let's try it again.
I'm going to count you off.
So here were we go.
One, two, one, two, three
"And they were dancing, and singing
and moving to the grooving
and just like it hit me
somebody turned around and shouted
(Aud) Play that funky music white boy."
DW: Good, good.
Now, some of y'all didn't get it.
(Laughter)
Some of y'all that still didn't get it.
So I need you to do this.
Turn to your neighbor,
and say, "Neighbor."
Turn and say: Neighbor,
(Audience) Neighbor
DW: I wanna get funky.
(Audience) I wanna get funky
DW: Now -
(Laughter)
Now
(Laughter)
Turn to your other neighbor,
and say, "Neighbor"
(Aud) Neighbor
DW: Neighbor,
(Aud) Neighbor
DW: I hope you give me another chance
(Aud) I hope you give me another chance
DW: to get funky.
(Aud) to get funky
DW: OK, I'll give you
another chance to redeem yourself.
So everybody stand up, come on!
Everybody stand up.
We're going to do
a little exercise here, OK?
Now,
everybody knows
how to spell Ohio, right?
(Aud) Right
DW: If you're from Michigan,
a Wolverine, I understand
it might be a little difficult,
but we're going to spell this out
using our hands and mouth
at the same time, OK?
So it's like this:
the pattern is one,
two, three, four, and
O - h
- i - o
and O -
- h - i
o. Now,
we're going to add a little music to that.
Y'all ready?
Drop the music
(Music)
You ready? Feel the funk.
(Rhythmic clapping)
and O -
h - i
o and
O - h -
- i - o - Come on!
O - Come on! - h - i - o -
O - h - i - o -
in the balcony -
O - h - i - o -
in the balcony -
(Aud) O - h - i - o -
DW: This section -
(Aud) O - h - i - o
DW: This section
(Aud) O - h - i - o
DW: This section
(Aud) O - h - i - o
DW: Give yourself a round of applause.
Be seated please.
(Applause)
You see, someone asked me,
what was my purpose?
So I told them this,
"To educate the public's knowledge
in the history of funk music on the one."
This genre of funk music the collective
was told in a rhythm
geared for me,
as an adult to a youth
to a professional artist, and playing.
As I conclude,
Ohio
is the heart of it all for funk music,
and Dayton, Ohio
is the nerve center of funk.
Music is harmony.
Harmony is music.
Harmony is the strength of support
of all institutions,
especially this.
Funk music, the empowerment of education
in my life.
Thank you.
(Cheers)
(Applause)
(Musique)
Vous sentez le funk ?
Vous sentez le funk ?
(Public) Oui !
David Wells : Frappez dans vos mains !
Allez ! Allez !
Sentez le funk ! Sentez le funk !
Ouais ! Ouais ! Ouais !
Ouais ! Ouais ! Ouais !
On veut du funk !
Allez !
Vous le sentez ?
Plus fort : vous le sentez ?
(Public) Oui !
DW : Vous le sentez ?
(Public) Oui !
Et ce passage, vous le sentez ?
(Public) Oui !
DW : Super, super.
(Applaudissements)
Mais d'autres précurseurs
m'ont aussi influencé
dans ma quête de savoir
de la musique funk.
À Augusta, Georgia, c'était James Brown,
qui mélangeait les genres musicaux
rythm and blues, jazz et soul
et en faisait un art
aujourd'hui appelé funk.
À Detroit, Michigan, George Clinton.
À Memphis, Tennessee,
Isaac Hayes.
Sly and the Family Stone.
l'auto-discipline
et les compétences et la confiance
nécessaires
pour faire face aux défis difficiles
dans ma vie
d'étudiant
et d'adulte.
Faisons une démonstration, d'accord ?
Comment battre un rythme de funk
et le garder sur le premier temps.
(Rires)
Parce que le funk est un pont
entre nos racismes.
Par exemple, tout le monde se souvient
de KC and the Sunshine Band ?
Vous vous en souvenez ?
Ok, ouais, ouais !
Vous vous souvenez du groupe
Average White Band ?
Et un groupe d'ici, d'Ohio,
Wild Cherry.
Vous vous souvenez de :
« Play That Funky Music, White Boy » ?
Bien, faisons une petite démonstration.
On va prendre une chanson au hasard
et voir si vous connaissez.
Si je dis : « Vous les copains,
je n'vous oublierai jamais »,
vous dites ?
(Public)
Di doua di di doua di dam di di dou.
DW : Wow, c'est super.
(Rires)
Allez, on va y ajouter un rythme, ok ?
Parce que c'est en 2/4, ok ?
Je vais compter et je veux
que vous m'aidiez à chanter, ok ?
Vous êtes prêts ?
On y va.
Un, deux, un deux trois quatre :
« Vous les copains,
je n'vous oublierai jamais. »
(Public)
Di doua di di doua di dam di di dou.
DW : Encore une fois :
« Vous les copains,
je n'vous oublierai jamais. »
(Public)
Di doua di di doua di dam di di dou.
DW : Bien, bien, bien.
La funk, c'est sur le 1 et le 3 temps.
Ok, prenons un peu de ...
« Play that Funky Music
Oh, vous êtes bons !
(Rires)
« voisin ».
Tournez-vous et dites : « Voisin ».
(Public) : Voisin.
DW : Je veux du funk.
Je veux du funk.
Maintenant,
(Rires)
maintenant,
(Rires)
tournez-vous vers votre autre voisin
et dites : « Voisin ».
(Public) : Voisin.
DW : Voisin.
(Public) : Voisin.
DW : Donne-moi une autre chance
(Public) : Donne-moi une autre chance
DW : de faire du funk.
(Public) : de faire du funk.
DW : Ok, je vous laisse une chance
de vous rattraper.
Tout le monde debout, allez !
Tout le monde debout !
On va faire un petit exercice, d'accord ?
Tout le monde sait épeler Ohio ?
(Public) Oui.
O - H
- I - O
et O -
- H - I
O.
Là,
on va ajouter un peu de musique.
Vous êtes prêts ?
Musique !
(Musique)
Vous êtes prêts ? Sentez le funk.
(Applaudissement en rythme)
et O -
H - I
O et
O - H -
- I - O - Allez !
O - Allez ! - H - I, lâchez-vous, O -
O - H - I - O -
Le balcon !
O - H - I - O -
Le balcon !
O - H - I - O -
Cette section -
O - H - I - O -
Et celle-ci -
O - H - I - O -
Cette section-là -
O - H - I - O -
Vous pouvez vous applaudir.
Asseyez-vous.
(Applaudissements)

Fire
i そして o
戻って O
h そして i
O -
h - i -
o そして
O - h -
O 良いぞ!- h - i - o
O - h - i - o
O - h - i - o
(聴衆)O - h - i - o
(聴衆)O - h - i - o
(聴衆)O - h - i - o
(聴衆)O - h - i - o

Vocês estão sentindo o funk?
Estão sentindo o funk?
(Plateia) Sim!
David Webb: Batam palmas! Vamos lá!
(Música funk)
Sintam o funk! Sintam
o funk! Isso! Isso! Isso!
Isso aí! Isso! Isso!
Queremos o funk!
Vamos lá!
Sintam! Estão sentindo?
Não estou ouvindo. Estão sentindo?

DW: Ótimo.
Nos anos 1960, houve um movimento no Sul
de migração para o Norte
em busca de empregos na indústria.
Na época, minha família havia se mudado
de Milan, Tennessee, para Dayton, Ohio,
em busca de uma vida melhor.
Foi quando, ainda muito jovem,
fui apresentado ao funk.
Naquela época, os jovens estavam focados
em expressão artística musical na escola.
E eu estava na quinta série
na Jefferson Elementary School,
(Risos)
e aprendendo a tocar
um instrumento pela primeira vez.
Eu queria tocar bateria.
Fui até a professora de música
e perguntei: "Posso tocar
bateria na banda da turma?"
Mas ela me deu uma flauta infantil.
(Risos)
Ela achou
que a bateria seria
muito difícil para eu aprender.
E disse que eu não conseguia
manter o ritmo.
a flauta infantil.
(Risos)
Naquele dia, naquele momento,
eu descobri uma coisa:
minha mãe
era viciada em "drogas".
Ela me arrastou para a droga
da aula de música.
(Risos)
Ela me arrastou para os ensaios
das bandas marciais.
Me arrastou para a igreja.
Me arrastou para qualquer lugar
onde eu pudesse aprender a tocar
um instrumento.
(Risos)
Mas, no início dos anos 1970,
existia um grupo em Dayton, Ohio,
chamado The Ohio Players.
(Vivas)
(Aplausos)
Eu ouvia músicas como "Pain",
"Funky worm", "Skin tight" e "Fire",
e nesse momento
eu soube que queria ser um baterista.
Então o funk explodiu
em Dayton, Ohio, para mim,
transformando a cidade
na capital mundial do funk.
(Aplausos)
Mas houve outros inovadores
que me influenciaram
em minha jornada de conhecimento do funk.
Em Augusta, Geórgia, foi James Brown,
que combinou os ritmos rhythm and blues,
jazz e soul numa forma de arte
que hoje conhecemos como funk.
Em Detroit, Michigan, foi George Clinton.
E também em Memphis,
no Tennessee, Isaac Heyes.
E na costa oeste, em São Francisco,
influenciando as mensagens
de família e cultura positiva,
havia Sylvester Stewart,
que depois ficou conhecido com sua banda
Sly and the Family Stone.
caída no esquecimento,
como as aulas de arte e música,
não mais oferecidas em escolas públicas,
até
a parceria da Arts Education Partnership
com o Committee on the Arts and Humanities
começar um estudo para examinar o impacto
e por que e como um jovem como eu,
com 13 anos de idade, foi transformado
pela experiência com a arte.
Evidências mostram que crianças
com mais atividades artísticas
têm resultados melhores
que aqueles com pouco ou nenhum contato
com a arte, em todas as áreas.
O estudo "Champions of Change",
campeões da mudança,
descobriu evidências
de que o ensino de artes
ajuda a desenvolver hábitos
que ajudam em outras áreas
e pode alcançar alunos em risco
quando outras disciplinas não conseguem.
As artes proporcionam experiências
autênticas de aprendizado para jovens
que envolvem sua mente,
seu coração e seu corpo.
A educação artística ajuda
os alunos a aprender.
Pode melhorar a criatividade,
a autodisciplina,
e habilidade e confiança necessárias
para os momentos desafiadores,
como na minha vida,
tanto como estudante ou adulto.
Então deixem-me fazer uma demonstração
de como manter a batida do funk no ritmo.
(Risos)
A música funk preenche
a lacuna de nosso racismo.
Por exemplo, vocês se lembram
de KC and the Sunshine Band?
Lembram-se deles?
É isso aí! Isso!
Lembram-se do grupo Average White Band
e do grupo aqui de Ohio
chamado Wild Cherry?
Todos se lembram de "Play
that funky music, white boy", certo?
Ótimo. Vamos fazer uma demonstração.
Vamos tocar uma música qualquer
e ver se conhecem isso.
Se eu falar "There she was just walking
down the street", vocês dizem:
(Plateia) Do wah diddy
diddy dum diddy do.
DW: Puxa! Isso foi demais.
(Risos)
"There she goes just a walking down
the street singin'.
(Plateia) Do wah diddy
diddy dum diddy do."
DW: Mais uma vez:
"There she goes just
a walking down the street singin'.
(Plateia) Do wah diddy
diddy dum diddy do".
DW: Bom, bom, bom.
Bem, a batida do funk é no um e no três.
Ok? Vamos pegar um pouco de...
"Play that funky music,
white boy" de Wild Cherry.
Todos conhecem, certo?
Vamos da parte que eles falam...
e se vocês sabem, me ajudem:
"And they were dancin' and singin'
and movin' to the groovin',
and just like it hit me
somebody turned around and shouted:
(Plateia) Play that funky
music, white boy".
DW: Vocês são muito bons!
(Risos)
Podemos colocar uma batida?
Vamos colocar uma batida.
Vamos tentar de novo, eu vou contar.
Então lá vamos nós.
Um, dois, um, dois, três:
"And they were dancing, and singing
and moving to the grooving
and just like it hit me
somebody turned around and shouted:
(Pateia) play that funky
music, white boy".
DW: Bom, bom.
Bem, alguns de vocês não pegaram.
(Risos)
Alguns de vocês ainda não pegaram.
Então façam o seguinte.
Vire para seu vizinho e diga: "Vizinho",
vire e diga: "Vizinho"...
(Plateia) Vizinho...
DW: quero ficar funky.
(Plateia) quero ficar funky.
DW: Agora...
(Risos)
Agora...
(Risos)
Vire para seu outro vizinho
e diga: "Vizinho"...
(Plateia) Vizinho...
DW: Vizinho...
(Plateia) Vizinho...
DW: espero que me dê outra chance...
(Plateia) espero que me dê
outra chance...
DW: de ficar funky.
(Plateia) de ficar funky.
DW: Tudo bem, vou dar
outra chance para se redimirem.
Então todos em pé, vamos lá!
Todos de pé.
Vamos fazer um pouco de exercício, tá?
Bem...
todos sabem como se escreve Ohio, certo?
(Plateia) Sim.
DW: Quem for de Michigan e torce
pros Wolverines, eu entendo,
pode ser um pouco difícil,
mas vamos soletrar
usando as mãos e a boca
O - h - i - o!
E O - h - i - o!
Vamos acrescentar um pouco de música aqui.
Estão prontos?
Som na caixa.
(Música funk)
Estão prontos? Sintam o funk.
(Palmas ritmadas)
E O - h - i - o!
E O - h - i - o! Vamos lá!
Vamos lá! O - h - i - o!
O - h - i - o!
No mezanino:
(Plateia) O - h - i - o!
DW: No mezanino:
(Plateia) O - h - i - o!
DW: Esse lado:
(Plateia) O - h - i - o!
DW: Esse lado:
(Plateia) O - h - i - o!
DW: Esse lado:
(Plateia) O - h - i - o!
DW: Uma salva de palmas para vocês.
Sentem-se por favor.
(Aplausos)
Vejam bem, uma pessoa me perguntou
qual o meu propósito.
E eu disse o seguinte:
"É educar o público sobre a história
do funk com o ritmo".
Esse gênero, a música funk,
foi criada num ritmo
sob medida para mim,
como adulto ou criança,
ou como artista profissional, tocando.
Concluindo,
Ohio
é o coração de toda a música funk,
e Dayton, Ohio, é
o sistema nervoso do funk.
Música é harmonia.
Harmonia é música.
Harmonia é a força
que apoia todas instituições,
especialmente esta.
Música funk, o empoderamento da educação
na minha vida.
Obrigado.
(Aplausos) (Vivas)
(David Wells):
(James Brown),
(Sylvester Stewart),
(Arts Education Partnership),
(Champions of Change)》
(Average White)
“Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do."
O - h
- i - o
再来 O -
- h - i
h - i
o 再来——
O - h -
- i - o 来吧!
O - 来吧! -h - i - o -
O - h - i - o -
O - h - i - o -
(观众)O - h - i - o -
(观众)O - h - i - o -
(观众)O - h - i - o
(观众)O - h - i - o
