What Does a Data Scientist Do?

  • 0:00 - 0:01
    Hi, I'm Katherine,
  • 0:02 - 0:04
I'm a data scientist at Codecademy.
  • 0:08 - 0:11
    My job at Codecademy
    is to analyze our learners
  • 0:11 - 0:13
and see what courses people are taking.
  • 0:13 - 0:18
    I work with marketing,
    engineering, product, curriculum
  • 0:18 - 0:20
to analyze the data that we have.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    Data science is defined
    as sort of the intersection
  • 0:25 - 0:29
    between statistics, software engineering,
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    and domain or business knowledge.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
    So you have to have
a little bit of coding skills,
  • 0:35 - 0:36
a little bit of statistics skills,
  • 0:36 - 0:39
and a little bit of knowledge
    about your business.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    And I think the site,
  • 0:41 - 0:46
the piece of that that's actually
most critical is the business side of it,
  • 0:46 - 0:49
where in the organization do you fit
into that I think going forward.
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    A lot of companies
    are trying to figure out
  • 0:52 - 0:55
how to best integrate data people
    into their organization
  • 0:55 - 0:59
so that they still have a say over
    strategy and decision-making,
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    and sort of the implementation
of the analysis that they come up with.
  • 1:02 - 1:08
We haven't honed in on like how
data science or data analysis as a field
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    fits into different organizations.
  • 1:10 - 1:14
For a lot of companies is the first time
    they're building a data team.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
I think traditionally in the past
when there have been two teams,
  • 1:17 - 1:22
It's kind of sit separately from like
engineering and software side of it,
  • 1:22 - 1:23
    and now that's more integrated
  • 1:23 - 1:26
and it just looks very different
    from teams in the past.
  • 1:29 - 1:32
I think the data science community
    is really collaborative.
  • 1:33 - 1:36
I would say that every time I go to
like a conference or meet up
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    I'm always humbled by
how much more I have to learn.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    And I think originally
when I broke into the field
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    I felt really overwhelmed
  • 1:44 - 1:46
and I felt a lot of like imposter syndrome
  • 1:46 - 1:49
about having to learn a lot
  • 1:49 - 1:52
like half the time I was just like --
    I don't know what's going on,
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    but then I realized actually,
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    when you work
    in data analysis or statistics
  • 1:56 - 1:59
you end up specializing in one part of it.
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    So you might specialize
    in predictive analysis,
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    you might specialize in reporting,
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    you might specialize in machine
    learning or artificial intelligence
  • 2:07 - 2:10
and there is so many subsets.
  • 2:10 - 2:13
    Usually, data scientists,
    or statisticians, or data analysts
  • 2:13 - 2:17
    will focus on one thing
and get really good at it
  • 2:17 - 2:20
and that will be sort of
    the core of their work.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
You meet a lot of interesting
    people along the way
  • 2:23 - 2:27
who just know like really random
    things about random subjects.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
Like a lot of the people who I meet
    at conferences and meetups
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    have become my friends.
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    And it's really interesting,
    cause between each other
  • 2:35 - 2:37
we think we do really different things,
  • 2:37 - 2:40
but from the outside looking in,
someone who doesn't work in the data world
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    probably thinks we're
    all doing the same thing.
