Amara Editor: Caption a video

The Amara subtitle editor
is a simple and fun to use platform.

In this video we'll show you
how to use it to transcribe.

Before you get started
make sure to check out

the Subtitling Guidelines, over here.

Generally, the guidelines include;
having less than 42 characters,

are less than two lines,

and remain visible
long enough to be read.

To transcribe, click on the Tab key
to play the video

and type what you hear in the box.

Press the Tab key at any point
to pause the video,

and use Shift+Tab to skip back.

To create a new subtitle line,
press Enter.

If your current subtitle is too long,
use Shift+Enter to split the subtitle

into two lines in the same subtitle cell,

or, use Ctrl+Enter to split
the subtitle into two subtitle cells.

You can also upload a subtitle file
directly into the Editor, over here.

Once you have typed everything
you can sync the subtitles to the video.

Click on the start syncing button
and it will bring up the timeline.

Play your video from the top

and use the down and up arrows
to set the timing.

The down arrow sets
the start of the subtitles

and the up arrow sets the end.

Continue until you finish syncing
the timing of all the subtitles.

To readjust the timing,
drag the subtitles on the timeline.

Once you're done syncing,
time to review!

Go back and watch carefully for any typos,

missing information or wrong timing.

Also, pay attention to where
the subtitles are on the screen,

you can drag and drop the subtitles
to where you want them to be.

Congratulations, you've finished
your first subtitle transcription!
