Aberfan, June Legg

  • 0:04 - 0:07
    [Sad instrumental music.]
  • 0:07 - 0:11
June Legg: I was a nurse in [?] hospital.
  • 0:11 - 0:14
We were all asked if we would like
    to help out,
  • 0:14 - 0:17
and my children were the same age
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    as the ones that were...
  • 0:20 - 0:21
    were trapped,
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    in the school.
  • 0:22 - 0:25
And I didn't know if I could do it.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    I wanted to help, but I -- I
  • 0:27 - 0:28
    just couldn't.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
And the nurse said, well, she said,
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    "Think that at least
    the mothers will know
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    that you're doing...
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    [whispers]
you'll be doing it for them.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    For the children, as well."
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    And, uh...
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    I realized, after, yes.
  • 0:43 - 0:44
    [Sad music.]
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    But, I -- I'm glad
    that she said that,
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    because I had thought
  • 0:48 - 0:50
that I would just break down,
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    but, uh...
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    we went over to Aberfan.
  • 0:55 - 0:58
We were all posted up on the tip.
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    And we were told,
    when the Klaxon horn went,
  • 1:01 - 1:02
    to move.
  • 1:02 - 1:06
    And we were there,
we had a few minor injuries.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
And then, the Klaxon horn went.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    And we went down to
    an old chapel,
  • 1:11 - 1:12
    by the river,
  • 1:12 - 1:15
and we were all getting ready
    to help out there,
  • 1:15 - 1:18
and we had the cover to move,
  • 1:18 - 1:20
because the river was flooding in.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    So, off we went again,
  • 1:22 - 1:25
    and, somehow,
I got lost from all the rest,
  • 1:25 - 1:29
    and eventually, I found them.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    They were all being taken
  • 1:31 - 1:34
    in the ambulance,
    for exposure.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
    because they only had
    their uniforms on.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
So, so they were taken back,
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    and I was left there.
  • 1:41 - 1:43
I was going to meet my husband,
  • 1:43 - 1:45
because he was in the police force.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    He was there as well.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    Eventually, I found
    our little mini car,
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    and my husband came,
    thank goodness.
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    [Exhales.]
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    And everywhere seemed to me
    to be black.
  • 1:56 - 2:01
    Absolutely, it was pouring,
and it was like black rain.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
    There was a little road
    beside a canal,
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    one drop on one side
and the canal on the other,
  • 2:07 - 2:10
    And luckily, we've been rallying,
  • 2:10 - 2:13
    so we were able
    to follow the road,
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    and we arrived safely home.
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    But I'll never forget.
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    Never forget that.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
i was just glad, in a way,
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    that I didn't have to
    see any of the children,
  • 2:24 - 2:27
    but I was there ready,
    if needed.
  • 2:27 - 2:35
    [Sad instrumental music.]
