COVID-19: Moderna vaccine approved for use in Singapore

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    The health sciences authority
  • 0:02 - 0:05
has approved the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine
  • 0:05 - 0:06
    for use in Singapore.
  • 0:06 - 0:08
the first shipment is expected to arrive
  • 0:08 - 0:09
    next month
  • 0:09 - 0:11
and will be progressively rolled out
  • 0:11 - 0:13
to those, aged 18 and above,
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    Nisha Rahim with more:
  • 0:15 - 0:17
[Nisha Rahim] it's been over a month
  • 0:17 - 0:18
    since Singapore received it's first
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine.
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    shortly after, the country kick-started
  • 0:24 - 0:25
    it's vaccination programme.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
on Wednesday, Singapore approved the use
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    of the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
The first shipment is expected to arrive
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    some time next month.
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    The vaccine is the second
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    to be authorised by the
  • 0:37 - 0:38
    Health Sciences authority
  • 0:38 - 0:40
and endorsed by the expert committy
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    on Covid-19 vaccination.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
It has a high efficacy of 94%.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
This efficacy was based on a phase 3
  • 0:48 - 0:51
clinical trial, conducted with over 30,000
  • 0:51 - 0:54
    participants, aged 18-95.
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    Moderna's vaccination regime
  • 0:56 - 0:59
requires 2 doses to be administered,
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    28 days apart.
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    Unlike the Pfizer vaccine,
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    which is for individuals
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    aged 16 and above,
  • 1:06 - 1:08
Moderna is approved for people aged 18
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    and above.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
Those who shouldn't take the vaccine
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    include pregnant women,
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    severely immunocompromised persons,
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    and persons with history of
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    severe allergies.
  • 1:18 - 1:19
    According to 1 expert,
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    the Moderna vaccine is similar
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    to Pfizer-BioNTech, in terms of
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    profile and efficacy.
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    [Deputy Director] i don't think there's any
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    major difference between the 2
  • 1:28 - 1:30
if you look at the clinical trial data,
  • 1:30 - 1:32
the efficacy is about the same.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
    Both are around 95%.
  • 1:35 - 1:36
The side effect profile is about
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    the same.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
So the Moderna uses a slightly higher
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    dose than Pfizer:
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    100mcg compared to 30mcg
  • 1:46 - 1:47
[Nisha Rahim] Though the storage conditions
  • 1:47 - 1:49
are different, Pfizer vaccines will need
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    to be stored at -70°C,
  • 1:52 - 1:55
    compared to Moderna's -20°C.
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    That won't be an issue
  • 1:57 - 1:59
as Singapore has the storage capacity
  • 1:59 - 2:00
    for both.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    The consideration now is whether
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    there's enough ready supply.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
[Deputy Director] The bigger consideration is
  • 2:06 - 2:10
which vaccine is going to be available
  • 2:10 - 2:11
    to Singapore.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
There will be a global shortage
  • 2:14 - 2:15
    in production
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    because the demand right now
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    far out-strips the supply.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
So i think for Singapore's population,
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    the more important consideration
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    is 'do these vaccines work?'
  • 2:25 - 2:26
    the answer is 'yes'
  • 2:26 - 2:28
'are they safe?', i think the answer is
  • 2:28 - 2:28
    'yes'
  • 2:28 - 2:32
There is practically no real difference
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    between these vaccines,
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    so it's a question of
  • 2:37 - 2:40
which one can Singapore get its
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    hand on?
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    [Nisha Rahim] As of Tuesday,
  • 2:42 - 2:44
    more than 175,000 individuals
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    in Singapore have received the
  • 2:46 - 2:49
first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
About 6000 of them have also
  • 2:51 - 2:52
    received the 2nd dose.
