The Majestic Plastic Bag - A Mockumentary

  • 0:02 - 0:05
The open plains of the asphalt jungle.
  • 0:05 - 0:09
Home to many creatures, great and small.
  • 0:09 - 0:13
And the pppping ground for one the
    most clever and illustrious creatures,
  • 0:13 - 0:16
    the Plastic Bag.
  • 0:16 - 0:21
Today we explore the cycle of life for
this curious creature, the plastic bag
  • 0:21 - 0:27
on its migration to its home,
    the Pacific ocean.
  • 0:27 - 0:31
    Once released into the wild,
the plastic bag is unsure of itself.
  • 0:31 - 0:37
It falters at first, but soon, with some help from the wind,
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    the bag will be airborne!
  • 0:40 - 0:45
This flight will be the first in its long
    journey towards it's final destination:
  • 0:45 - 0:51
the Garbage Patch in the heart
    of the Pacific Ocean.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
Using the wind to guide it,
  • 0:53 - 0:57
the plastic bag moves across the city,
    through the air.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    A city park.
  • 1:00 - 1:04
This park may, at first, seem like an
idyllic place for the plastic bag,
  • 1:04 - 1:08
but danger lurks around every corner.
  • 1:08 - 1:10
Here it will encounter many enemies,
  • 1:10 - 1:12
including one of the MOST dangerous...
  • 1:12 - 1:15
    Park Services!
  • 1:19 - 1:24
    Poor little fellow. Looks like
    HIS journey ends here.
  • 1:26 - 1:30
Meanwhile, our little bag has encountered
one of nature's most deadly killers...
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    the Teacup Yorkie.
  • 1:32 - 1:37
Once the Yorkie has locked onto it's
victim, there is very little hope of survival.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
But using it's superior size and
    deft manouvering,
  • 1:40 - 1:48
our bag manages to escape the
Yorkie's talons and flee for its life.
  • 1:50 - 1:54
    Over the course of its
    miraculous migration,
  • 1:54 - 1:57
the plastic bag will cover VAST distances,
  • 1:57 - 2:02
    through neighborhoods, across
    parks, and down city streets.
  • 2:03 - 2:06
It is now nightfall and our highly
    advanced Night Vision Cameras
  • 2:06 - 2:10
have managed to capture, for the
    FIRST TIME in history,
  • 2:10 - 2:13
a plastic bag in pitch black.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    PHENOMENAL!
  • 2:16 - 2:24
The vast cement rivers of California,
home to literally dozens of animals.
  • 2:24 - 2:28
Many plastic bags will not make
    it out of here,
  • 2:28 - 2:31
the reeds and branches will see to that.
  • 2:33 - 2:37
As at home in water as it is
on land or in the air,
  • 2:37 - 2:43
    the bag's natural buoyancy makes
    it an excellent swimmer.
  • 2:48 - 2:49
    It's close now...
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    and it can feel it!
  • 2:53 - 2:59
At last the bag has reached
the gateway to the open sea.
  • 3:01 - 3:05
Careful to avoid the mouths of hungry
sea-life that feed on the helpless plastic,
  • 3:05 - 3:12
the bag will travel 100s of miles, to join
the thriving community of plastic known as
  • 3:12 - 3:16
    the GREAT PACIFIC GARBAGE PATCH.
  • 3:16 - 3:19
    The Garbage Patch is a
    veritable plastic oasis,
  • 3:19 - 3:23
where millions of tons of plastic
garbage remain entrapped by the currents.
  • 3:24 - 3:25
It is said to be twice the size of Texas,
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    never actually biodegrading,
  • 3:28 - 3:33
Here the plastic bag can live indefinitely,
    peacefully, coexisting with
  • 3:33 - 3:36
    billions of other petroleum species,
  • 3:37 - 3:40
before breaking into ever tinier plastic pieces,
  • 3:40 - 3:45
thus completing the plastic cycle of life.
