What is the most useful piece of equipment?

  • 0:14 - 0:17
    What is the most useful
    piece of equipment?
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    It's been different at
    different times.
  • 0:24 - 0:29
    The first piece of
    useful equipment
  • 0:29 - 0:30
    was her pushchair.
  • 0:31 - 0:35
She was too big for a normal
    child size buggy.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
It allowed her to be really comfortable.
  • 0:38 - 0:43
It's given us the freedom to
    do things.
  • 0:43 - 0:46
    Actually for us, her
    mobility car.
  • 0:47 - 0:51
It has enabled us to go on so
    many adventures
  • 0:51 - 0:54
    and done so many things
    which without the car
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    we would never have been
    able to have done.
  • 0:57 - 0:59
I think from a practical point of
    view though
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    in terms of equipment, it's
    the suction machine.
  • 1:03 - 1:09
In terms of keeping her secretions
    and airways open.
  • 1:09 - 1:13
At the moment now she has
    got bigger her Achiever bed
  • 1:13 - 1:16
is the best thing we have got
    in our house
  • 1:17 - 1:20
    because it is really comfortable
    for her [Isabella]
  • 1:20 - 1:24
and we can change her easily
because she is difficult to lift,
  • 1:24 - 1:29
    and carry, it makes things
    easier for us.
  • 1:32 - 1:36
    Two things I'd probably say.
  • 1:36 - 1:39
    Her p-pod chair was great.
  • 1:39 - 1:44
She had other chairs, a stander but
    the p-pod seemed
  • 1:44 - 1:48
    to be more comfortable, relaxing
    and natural for Ruby.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
We had difficulties with her arms
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    in some of the chairs.
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    So, we loved the p-pod.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    The other one was the
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    vibrocushion.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
It was more of a sensory
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    piece of equipment.
  • 2:03 - 2:06
    Ruby loved lying on it,
    she was so comfortable
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    and Sam would get on
    with her.
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    She could hear the music
    and feel it.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    Ruby could feel it through
    the cushion, that was
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    one of her favourites.
  • 2:18 - 2:22
We got a lot of things
  • 2:25 - 2:27
For me it was the bath aid.
  • 2:28 - 2:33
That was a god send because
    trying to hold a baby
  • 2:33 - 2:37
with no inner core strength and
    trying to was
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    a slippery child and trying
    to get that child
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    out of the bath has
    been second to none.
  • 2:44 - 2:48
Also her p-pod is very useful.
  • 2:48 - 2:54
    It gives Hope another perspective
    to look around the room
  • 2:54 - 2:57
    and to see things from
    a different hight.
  • 2:58 - 3:01
    That has been very useful.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    For Amelie one of the
    biggest problems she has
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    are her secretions.
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    We've used various ways
    in controlling it
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    but when we got the
    suction machine
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    at first
  • 3:14 - 3:16
we rarely used it and it
    sat in its box.
  • 3:16 - 3:18
But, over time it has become
    one of the most
  • 3:18 - 3:19
    important things.
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    It really helps us maintain
    the fact she is healthy,
  • 3:22 - 3:25
she isn't getting any chest infections.
  • 3:25 - 3:30
You grow to use it and you grow
to realise how important it is.
  • 3:30 - 3:33
At first it is a bit of a
worrying piece of kit to use,
  • 3:33 - 3:36
    but then it becomes
    second nature.
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    When a child coughs, you
    use the suction machine.
  • 3:38 - 3:40
It makes such a huge difference
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    rather than have them
  • 3:42 - 3:43
    coughing all the time.
  • 3:43 - 3:46
You can just help them get
    rid of their secretions
  • 3:46 - 3:48
and they will be very comfortable.
  • 3:48 - 3:50
    I think another important
    piece of equipment
  • 3:50 - 3:52
    is the wheelchair.
  • 3:52 - 3:55
    They are just special prams.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
    Amelie was in a regular
    highstreet pram
  • 3:59 - 4:00
    for longer than most children
  • 4:01 - 4:02
because we have a younger child
  • 4:03 - 4:04
so we had them in a double buggy.
  • 4:05 - 4:07
We had to adapt it in several ways
  • 4:07 - 4:10
and now we've had this pram for a year
  • 4:10 - 4:11
and she is very comfortable in it
  • 4:11 - 4:14
and we use it in the house as well.
  • 4:14 - 4:20
We can go anywhere with her,
    on trains, taxis, cars.
  • 4:20 - 4:24
So, as soon as they start to
    need more support
  • 4:24 - 4:27
with seating it is a very
    important piece
  • 4:28 - 4:30
    of equipment to get.
  • 4:30 - 4:32
It helps with their general health
  • 4:32 - 4:34
    and you getting around giving
  • 4:34 - 4:36
    them new experiences.
  • 4:36 - 4:38
I think at first, we were
    resistant.
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    Lots of other families were
    about actually having the wheelchair
  • 4:40 - 4:42
    because they are going
    to look different.
  • 4:42 - 4:45
    Well, they do, because they
    are in a wheelchair
  • 4:45 - 4:47
    and they have a condition
    that requires it.
  • 4:47 - 4:51
I wish we had got one earlier
    because I think she would
  • 4:51 - 4:53
    have benefited a lot more
  • 4:53 - 4:55
because we use it for everything.
  • 4:55 - 4:58
We use it in the house as a
    seating solution.
  • 4:59 - 5:01
    It's definitely something to consider
  • 5:02 - 5:03
    as soon as you can
  • 5:03 - 5:06
because it will make a big difference.
