US China Trade War—No End in Sight
-
0:01 - 0:03No end in sight for the trade war
-
0:03 - 0:06Human rights become America's secret weapon
-
0:06 - 0:10And China makes threats to... well, everyone
-
0:10 - 0:12That more on this week's China Uncensored
-
0:17 - 0:19This is China Uncensored I'm Chris Chappell.
-
0:19 - 0:21This week's China News headlines.
-
0:21 - 0:24The US-China trade war looks like it's going to be a long one.
-
0:24 - 0:28Earlier this week President Trump announced new tariffs on China.
-
0:28 - 0:31And the Chinese regime responded by devaluing its currency
-
0:31 - 0:34So the US Treasury Department declared China
-
0:34 - 0:35a currency manipulator,
-
0:35 - 0:37which we all pretty much knew they were for years
-
0:37 - 0:39but hey now it's official.
-
0:39 - 0:42And then the Chinese Communist Party responded by
-
0:42 - 0:44calling the currency manipulator label
-
0:44 - 0:45totally wrong
-
0:45 - 0:48which proves something I believed for a long time,
-
0:48 - 0:52the Communist Party honestly doesn't know what WRONG means.
-
0:52 - 0:54It explains so much.
-
0:54 - 0:58Chinese companies have also been ordered to stop buying US agricultural products
-
0:58 - 1:00According to a trade advocacy group,
-
1:00 - 1:05Trump's tariffs have cost US businesses 3.4 billion dollars
-
1:05 - 1:06But according to US Treasury data,
-
1:06 - 1:08over the past 12 months,
-
1:08 - 1:11the US government has collected 63 billion dollars in tariffs
-
1:11 - 1:15about half of that is due to the increased tariffs on Chinese goods.
-
1:15 - 1:18Meanwhile, a lot of Chinese companies are struggling.
-
1:18 - 1:22They've resorted to issuing more than 200 billion dollars in I.O.U.s
-
1:22 - 1:25Wait, where have I seen that before?
-
1:26 - 1:29What is this, where's all the money?
-
1:30 - 1:31That's as good as money sir.
-
1:32 - 1:34Those are I.O.U.s
-
1:34 - 1:35Brilliant!
-
1:35 - 1:39The Trump administration is going nuclear on human rights.
-
1:39 - 1:41This week Secretary of State Mike Pompeo
-
1:41 - 1:45said: "China is home to one of the worst Human Rights crises of our time.
-
1:45 - 1:48It is truly the stain of the century.
-
1:48 - 1:52And here I thought my roommate's old couch had the stain of the century.
-
1:52 - 1:54Vice president Mike Pence said the US
-
1:54 - 1:58is also considering punishing Chinese officials for human rights abuses
-
1:58 - 2:01Vice president Mike Pence has signaled that the Trump administration
-
2:01 - 2:04is open to using the global Magnitsky act to sanction
-
2:04 - 2:06top officials in Xin Jiang, China.
-
2:06 - 2:09The global Magnitsky act is basically targeted sanctions.
-
2:09 - 2:12Rather than hitting an entire country
-
2:12 - 2:15it targets specific officials involved in crimes.
-
2:15 - 2:17It prevents them from traveling to the US
-
2:17 - 2:20ceases any property they own in the US
-
2:20 - 2:23and punishes companies and banks for doing business with them.
-
2:23 - 2:27It basically cuts these officials off from the high-end lifestyle
-
2:27 - 2:29they typically enjoy in the Western world.
-
2:29 - 2:33No more sipping espresso martinis in Miami
-
2:33 - 2:34tragic.
-
2:35 - 2:39Pence also met with representatives of religious groups persecuted in China
-
2:39 - 2:40including Christian
-
2:40 - 2:43Uyghur Muslim and Falun Gong representatives.
-
2:43 - 2:45In response, the Chinese Communist Party couldn't decide
-
2:45 - 2:47whether to condemn the meeting
-
2:47 - 2:50or just pretend the persecuted groups didn't exist.
-
2:50 - 2:52Tough choices.
-
2:52 - 2:53And late last week
-
2:53 - 2:56a Uyghur man was detained in Qatar,
-
2:56 - 2:58they were going to deport him back to China
-
2:58 - 3:01so he made an impassioned plea over social media.
-
3:01 - 3:03I need the world's help.
-
3:03 - 3:05After story spread on social media,
-
3:05 - 3:08he was put on a plane to the US.
-
3:08 - 3:12Yes the US State Department rescued a Muslim refugee
-
3:12 - 3:14and confused a lot of Americans.
-
3:14 - 3:16But if human rights aren't enough of a weapon
-
3:16 - 3:18against the Chinese Communist Party.
-
3:18 - 3:20There are always actual weapons.
-
3:20 - 3:23The US has withdrawn from the INF treaty.
-
3:23 - 3:26That's the intermediate-range nuclear forces treaty.
-
3:26 - 3:27The reason the State Department says
-
3:27 - 3:31is the Russian Federation's continuing violation of the treaty.
-
3:31 - 3:32Another reason is China.
-
3:32 - 3:33According to the treaty,
-
3:33 - 3:38the US couldn't flight test or possess intermediate-range ground-launched missiles.
-
3:38 - 3:42China never signed on to the INF treaty.
-
3:42 - 3:45And guess what China has been building.
-
3:45 - 3:47Now that the US is out of the INF treaty
-
3:47 - 3:49Secretary of Defense Mark Esper has said
-
3:49 - 3:53the US plans to deploy non-nuclear INF range missiles in Asia
-
3:53 - 3:55"sooner rather than later."
-
3:55 - 3:58The Chinese counties party is not pleased
-
3:58 - 4:01and has warned it will not stand idly by.
-
4:01 - 4:03Which is fantastic.
-
4:03 - 4:06The CIA already said a year ago we're in Cold War II.
-
4:06 - 4:10And now we have a right proper arms race going on.
-
4:10 - 4:11You know what that means?
-
4:11 - 4:13James Bond movies will be good again.
-
4:13 - 4:14The real question is...
-
4:14 - 4:18will she be a trigger-happy womanizer like the previous 007?
-
4:18 - 4:22But it's not just US missiles China has to worry about.
-
4:22 - 4:26Taiwan is developing a new supersonic cruise missile
-
4:26 - 4:27but from a certain point of view
-
4:27 - 4:32doesn't that really just mean China is developing a new supersonic cruise missile?
-
4:32 - 4:33What's that Shelley?
-
4:33 - 4:34No?
-
4:34 - 4:36Okay.
-
4:36 - 4:39Taiwan is reportedly building 20 of the Eun Fung missiles
-
4:39 - 4:42as well as 10 truck based launchers.
-
4:42 - 4:43This would give Taiwan the ability
-
4:43 - 4:45to hit many of the Chinese military bases
-
4:45 - 4:49that would potentially be involved in an assault on the island nations.
-
4:49 - 4:52And even NATO was getting involved,
-
4:52 - 4:54the secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg
-
4:54 - 4:56says NATO needs to address
-
4:56 - 4:58quote "the rise of China"
-
4:58 - 5:03specifically how China is "investing heavily in critical infrastructure in Europe"
-
5:03 - 5:05it's increased presence in the Arctic
-
5:05 - 5:07and also increased presence in Africa
-
5:07 - 5:09and in cyberspace.
-
5:09 - 5:09Of course,
-
5:09 - 5:14the real question is whether NATO will actually do anything.
-
5:14 - 5:14Meanwhile,
-
5:14 - 5:16China is threatening India.
-
5:16 - 5:20In a few months, India will be starting trials for 5g systems in the country.
-
5:20 - 5:23But the Indian government has yet to make it clear
-
5:23 - 5:23whether or not
-
5:23 - 5:27they'll let the Chinese telecom company Huawei join.
-
5:27 - 5:29Countries around the world have been joining the United States call
-
5:29 - 5:32to ban Huawei over national security concerns.
-
5:32 - 5:36But it's a good thing the Communist Party is so good at diplomacy.
-
5:36 - 5:39They know just how to soothe any fears India may have
-
5:39 - 5:41with threats.
-
5:41 - 5:43Chinese officials told the Indian ambassador in Beijing
-
5:43 - 5:47that there could be reverse sanctions on Indian firms
-
5:47 - 5:49engaged in business in China
-
5:49 - 5:51should India block Huawei.
-
5:51 - 5:52In other words,
-
5:52 - 5:53if India bans Huawei,
-
5:53 - 5:58China will make Indian private businesses operating in China suffer.
-
5:58 - 6:00Hopefully those private companies will
-
6:00 - 6:02then pressure the Indian government
-
6:02 - 6:06to put their short-term profits ahead of national security.
-
6:06 - 6:09So clearly things aren't going well for China.
-
6:09 - 6:12And now New Zealand is even getting upset.
-
6:12 - 6:14The Chinese consul in Auckland
-
6:14 - 6:15praised a group of Chinese students
-
6:15 - 6:20at a New Zealand University for a demonstration of spontaneous patriotism.
-
6:20 - 6:22See, students had put up a Lennon wall
-
6:22 - 6:25at the University of Auckland to support Hong Kong protesters.
-
6:25 - 6:25Of course,
-
6:25 - 6:27the Chinese consul wasn't referring to the people
-
6:27 - 6:29who put up the Lenin wall as patriots,
-
6:29 - 6:32it was these guys who were the patriots.
-
6:32 - 6:35Hong Kong is different from China
-
6:35 - 6:36Hong Kong is part of China.
-
6:36 - 6:40And if you don't like China, get out of China, ok?
-
6:40 - 6:42Hong Kong is part of China.
-
6:43 - 6:44I tell you that
-
6:44 - 6:48because you are not human *** that's stupid pig.
-
6:55 - 6:57I'm pretty sure she fell on purpose
-
6:57 - 7:01but it made international news ...so good on her.
-
7:01 - 7:03Of course that didn't stop mainland Chinese students
-
7:03 - 7:06from allegedly wrecking the Lennon wall.
-
7:06 - 7:07The good news is the New Zealand government
-
7:07 - 7:10has rebuked China over its recent comments and actions
-
7:10 - 7:12where it sought to suppress freedom of speech
-
7:12 - 7:15and voice support for violent opposition
-
7:15 - 7:17to Hong Kong protesters in New Zealand.
-
7:17 - 7:19Meanwhile, in the land down under.
-
7:19 - 7:22A Chinese student clearly not a patriot
-
7:22 - 7:26joined a local protest in support of Hong Kong protesters
-
7:26 - 7:28A few days later,
-
7:28 - 7:31Chinese officials visited his parents in China
-
7:31 - 7:32and they warned them not to let
-
7:32 - 7:35the student participate in any more protests.
-
7:35 - 7:38so that his family could stay safe
-
7:38 - 7:40Also, his parents had to reassure the officials
-
7:40 - 7:43that their son was loyal to the Communist Party.
-
7:43 - 7:45Which proves again that Chinese Communist Party
-
7:45 - 7:49influence in liberal democracies is nothing to worry about.
-
7:49 - 7:51Oh and then masked men destroyed a Lennon wall
-
7:51 - 7:53at another university in Australia.
-
7:53 - 7:56And with the destruction of that Lennon wall
-
7:56 - 7:59the Hong Kong protesters have been defeated
-
7:59 - 8:00Right.
-
8:00 - 8:04By the way, school is starting soon and if you're a university student
-
8:04 - 8:06why not set up your own Lennon wall?
-
8:06 - 8:09Be sure to take lots of pictures and video of what happens
-
8:09 - 8:11and send it to me on the China Uncensored Facebook page
-
8:11 - 8:15or my Twitter account @Chinauncensored.
-
8:15 - 8:19And showing that the Communist Party is really losing its grip
-
8:19 - 8:22it has banned Chinese movies and actors
-
8:22 - 8:26from going to one of the biggest movie award ceremonies in Asia
-
8:26 - 8:28because it's in Taiwan.
-
8:28 - 8:32And thus Taiwan fell and became a part of mainland China once again.
-
8:32 - 8:36Wow such good strategies the Communist Party comes up with.
-
8:36 - 8:38And that's it for this week's China news headlines
-
8:38 - 8:41And now, it's time for me to answer a question from one of you
-
8:41 - 8:45a fan who supports China Uncensored with a dollar more per episode
-
8:45 - 8:47by contributing through Patreon.
-
8:47 - 8:48Largezo asks:
-
8:48 - 8:52do you think that the PRC will conduct a military intervention
-
8:52 - 8:54in Hong Kong in the near future?
-
8:54 - 8:57Well that is certainly the question everyone is asking.
-
8:57 - 9:00Certainly the Chinese Communist Party has been hinting about that
-
9:00 - 9:02and let's not forget the PLA garrison in Hong Kong
-
9:02 - 9:06making videos showing them fighting unarmed protesters.
-
9:06 - 9:09But currently top communist leaders are
-
9:09 - 9:11at the annual Beidaihe meeting.
-
9:11 - 9:12And guess what?
-
9:12 - 9:17Jiang Zemin, the 92 year old former president and a heavyweight among party elders
-
9:17 - 9:20is expected to attend the conclave this year.
-
9:20 - 9:21And if you've been watching the show
-
9:21 - 9:24you know Jiang Zemin is behind a faction
-
9:24 - 9:26trying to undermine Xi Jinping.
-
9:26 - 9:30And I'm sure he'd love for things to go Tiananmen in Hong Kong
-
9:30 - 9:33because that would be very bad for Xi Jinping.
-
9:33 - 9:36But probably nothing concrete will happen until that meeting wraps
-
9:36 - 9:39and secretive party meetings are so secretive
-
9:39 - 9:42so who knows what will come out of it.
-
9:42 - 9:43Thanks for your question
-
9:43 - 9:44And thanks everyone watching.
-
9:44 - 9:47We could not make this show without your support.
-
9:47 - 9:49Whether it's supporting us through patreon
-
9:49 - 9:51or just watching and sharing the show with your friends and family
-
9:51 - 9:55So thank you for me and everyone on the China Uncensored team
-
9:55 - 9:57Once again I'm Chris Chappell see you next time.
