Claudia Goldin | Women in Economics
-
When you do economic research,
you have three pieces. -
I think of them as balls
-
同期していませんthat I want floating up
all the time. -
I'm juggling them,
-
同期していませんand one of them is the idea.
-
I have to begin with
"What's the question, -
Narrator] Economists!
-
Not a group with a lot
of Marys, Natashas, or Juanitas, -
同期していませんand that's caused
a lot of controversy. -
However, what's often overlooked
are the actual female economists -
同期していませんwho are economics forward
by addressing real world issues. -
Welcome to Women in Economics.
-
Ilyana] One thing I definitely
learned from Claudia -
同期していませんis to approach economic
research like a detective. -
I think, especially,
-
同期していませんwhen you're working
with economic history, -
同期していませんwhen you can't just download
a cleaned-up dataset. -
You really have to go searching
open, dusty boxes -
同期していませんand look under tocks.
-
Lawrence] She is the consummate,
economic historian. -
She has been
the innovator and pioneer -
and historical and better data -
women's role in the economy, -
同期していませんand then she is a fantastic
labor economist, -
同期していませんwho had been a leader on work
on understanding inequality. -
Claudia Dale Goldin was born
in 1946 in the Bronx. -
She was a problem-solver
from the beginning. -
As a child, she avoided
the New York City heat -
her summer days playing cards -
同期していませんor reading in air-conditioned
department stores. -
And while she always knew
-
同期していませんshe wanted to be
a scientist of some kind, -
同期していませんshe wasn't always set on economics.
-
She'll tell stories to me
-
同期していませんabout when she first went
to the Natural History Museum -
同期していませんwhen she was living in the Bronx
-
同期していませんand fell in love with mummies
-
同期していませんand thought that archeology
was going to be her passion. -
But then she discovered
microbiology, -
同期していませんand she suddenly realized
that microscopes uncovered -
同期していませんa whole new world
of discovery for her. -
It wasn't until she actually went
to college at Cornell -
同期していませんthat she first got introduced
to economics. -
I decided to become an economist
-
同期していませんbecause I took an economics class
-
同期していませんfrom an amazing person
named Fred Kahn. -
He was so excited about the field
of industrial organization -
同期していませんand product markets and regulation
-
同期していませんthat it was infectious.
-
And in fact, when I went
to graduate school -
同期していませんat the University of Chicago,
-
I went there to study
Industrial Organization. -
Under the mentorship of Bob Fogel,
-
Claudia studied
American Economic History, -
同期していませんparticularly the economics of slavery
and the post civil war south. -
She had to travel
to some southern states -
for this research. -
Goldin didn't approach this trip
like a traditional economist. -
She thought what I should do
-
同期していませんis hitchhike between
the different cities in the south. -
She met somebody
in one of the archives -
同期していませんwho let her stay at their place,
-
同期していませんand when she came back,
-
同期していませんher advisor asked her for a list
of the receipts and expenses -
同期していませんassociated with the trip,
-
同期していませんshe had no clue that you were
supposed to actually stay in hotels -
同期していませんand pay for actual travel,
-
同期していませんand you could get reimbursements.
-
By actually staying
with the archivists -
同期していませんand getting access to archives
-
同期していませんand knowledge that
you wouldn't have had, -
and understanding -
同期していませんthat wouldn't have been possible
-
同期していませんif you were going through
usual channels. -
(Narrator ) She continued
to focus on economic history, -
-
同期していませんas why the north and south
had different economic outcomes -
同期していませんafter the Civil War.
-
Then I remember thinking
that there were interesting aspects -
同期していませんin terms of child labor
and families. -
It suddenly occurred to me
the main changes in the labor force -
同期していませんhad to do with women.
-
Narrator] She realized
-
同期していませんthat there was
a huge story in US history -
同期していませんthat was missing
from economist scrutiny. -
同期していませんand that was the great evolution
of women's labor force participation. -
The women who were working,
-
同期していませんfrom much of the history
that I was looking at, -
But then it morphed
into studying how it was -
with families joined the workforce. -
Goldin combined
deep archival research, -
-
同期していませんto conduct study after study,
-
in the US labor force -
同期していませんevolved over 200 years.
-
Goldin's best known
for her contributions -
同期していませんto the economic subgender.
-
She sort of pioneers that area.
-
She has been thinking
about things that no one had known, -
同期していませんlike why is it that women's jobs
-
同期していませんwere much more likely
to be paid piece rate, -
同期していませんand men's jobs,
-
and given to their parents, -
in caring for the family -
同期していませんand how that affects the labor market.
-
She just has a determination
to figure out what's true, -
同期していませんto find the new data,
to read the historical sources, -
同期していませんto think about what
the actual people making decisions. -
One of the huge advantages
we have as economists, -
同期していませんwe can actually read the diaries
-
同期していませんof actual people
making these decisions -
同期していませんand talk to them and interview them
-
同期していませんwhen we're doing
contemporaneous work -
同期していませんor read their inner thoughts.
-
Narrator] As just one example,
Goldin 's exhaustive research -
同期していませんhas lead her
to identify four phases, -
同期していませんgoing back to the late 19th century
-
in the US economy. -
The first three phases
were revolutionary. -
While important advances were made
through the evolutionary phases, -
affecting their employment. -
Women in those periods
-
同期していませんwere more likely to view
their working lives as intermittent -
同期していませんand a means to put food
on the table. -
Then came the quiet revolution,
starting in the late 1970s. -
Women of the quiet revolution
generally reviewed their careers -
同期していませんas a significant part
of their personal identity -
同期していませんand make their own decisions
about their working lives. -
Goldin found that this latest phase
-
同期していませんwas triggered mainly by
increased investments in education -
of contraceptives. -
Edward] More than
any other person, -
同期していませんshe has been central in the study
of women and work in economics. -
She gave it a broad,
historical sweep, -
同期していませんshe tied it to economic theory
in a tight way. -
Anyone who works on the issue
of women and work going forward -
同期していませんwill be citing Claudia Goldin
and will be influenced by her. -
Working together with Larry Katz,
-
同期していませんshe's also done critical research
about education, technology, -
同期していませんand the extreme dangers
of income and inequality. -
She was among
the first to document -
同期していませんwhat we now think of
as a U- shape of inequality -
同期していませんover the 20th century.
-
To this day, economists
are still trying to figure out -
同期していませんthe determinants of that U-shape.
-
Narrator] As the first woman
to be offered [ ] -
同期していませんin the Harvard Economics Department,
-
同期していませんshe also takes her role
-
同期していませんof mentoring the next generation
of economists seriously. -
As any graduate student will tell you,
-
It's these personal touches
-
同期していませんthat make Claudia Goldin
such a wonderful advisor. -
Whether it's walking
her dog, Pika, with her, -
同期していませんreceiving midnight texts from her
that always made me laugh. -
She's not always serious,
-
同期していませんwhich, of course, is,
I think, very important -
同期していませんbecause if someone's
constantly serious, -
同期していませんit's just so intimidating
as a student. -
In 2014, Goldin started
-
in Economics Program, -
同期していませんa broad initiative to encourage
more female economics majors. -
When I'm doing
my best research, -
I am reminded
what I learned from Claudia, -
同期していませんand how research can be fun
-
同期していませんand how it's a mystery
that you want to unravel. -
She brings a joy
to her research. -
We were famously called
the "dismal science." -
It was certainly when
Claudia Goldin does at economics -
Narrator] Want to better
understand Goldin -
同期していませんand her contributions
to labor economics? -

and practice questions, -
同期していませんor check out other videos
-
同期していませんon how economists
are tackling all sorts of issues, -
-
同期していませんsuch as the Great Recession
and public health -
同期していませんto everyday topics, like wine--
-

-
This episode of Women in Economics profiles Claudia Goldin, pioneering economic historian, labor economist, and first female economist to be offered tenure at Harvard.
She was drawn to the sciences at a young age but switched to focusing on economics after taking an economics class with Alfred Kahn at Cornell as an undergrad.
Her most well-known research covers the evolution of women’s labor force participation, but her expertise is by no means confined to this topic. She’s also researched extensively on the economics of education, inequality, and automation.
