  • 0:00 - 0:04
    News Anchor:

  • 0:04 - 0:11
good job, a good life now facing possible time in federal prison for something she was doing at work.
  • 0:11 - 0:18
Local 4 Defender Kevin Dietz shows us something that millions of Americans do all the time.
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    Kevin Dietz:
Ever steal anything from the office?
  • 0:20 - 0:25
You're not alone more than one in three employees have taken home office supplies or work equipment.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
Costing the average business thousands of dollars every year.
  • 0:29 - 0:36
Tonight you're going to meet a suburban woman who stole from the office and it may have ruined her life.
  • 0:36 - 0:40
Lois McLachlan may not be that different from you or I.
  • 0:40 - 0:44
She lives in a nice home. Takes her dogs for walks around her upscale Rochester Hills neighborhood.
  • 0:44 - 0:52
She's provided a good life for her children by putting in years of service through her employer in exchange for nice paycheck.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
But according to these federal documents obtained by the Defenders
  • 0:55 - 0:58
Lois is accused of doing something many of us do.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
She took home merchandise that belongs to her employer.
  • 1:02 - 1:04
Be honest have you ever done that.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    Woman on the Street:
Yeah like pencils stuff like that.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    Another Woman on Street:
I don't see it happen, but I hear about it all the time.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    Kevin Dietz:
A national survey found 37 percent of employees
  • 1:11 - 1:15
admit to theft of office supplies. That’s more than 1 in 3,
  • 1:15 - 1:19
but for most people office supplies is as far as they go.
  • 1:19 - 1:25
The same survey said 18 percent of employees
will steal money or work products.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
Metro Detroiters we talked to say that's going too far.
  • 1:28 - 1:34
    Man on the street:
Since I didn't buy it, you know why would I take something and then sell it for my own gain.
  • 1:34 - 1:38
    Woman on the street:
May be more common now because the economy, but certainly not any less wrong.
  • 1:38 - 1:43
    Kevin Dietz:
Which brings us back to Los McLachlan. For 10 years she worked at General Motors.
  • 1:43 - 1:48
The last few as senior executive support an expert in technology.
  • 1:48 - 1:54
According to federal officials she noticed computer equipment just laying around the office that no one ever used, so she took it
  • 1:54 - 2:01
and decided to sell it on e-bay. The money deposited in her personal bank account.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
    Dr. Gerald Shiener – Psychiatrist:
If you work for General Motors or a large employer you have a
  • 2:04 - 2:08
supervisor but he's pretty much in the same boat you’re in and there's no face
  • 2:08 - 2:11
to attach to what you're taking and so there's no guilt.
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    Kevin Dietz:
Dr. Gerald Shiener, is a Birmingham psychiatrist.
  • 2:13 - 2:19
He says many employees will steal office supplies with little worry of consequences and little remorse.
  • 2:19 - 2:24
    Dr. Gerald Shiener:
Sometimes there are there some people who are very good at their job,
  • 2:24 - 2:28
but they’re sociopaths. They don't feel guilt they feel entitled to do what
  • 2:28 - 2:33
they want they think the rules don't apply to them and they can do something like this without feeling bad about it.
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    Kevin Dietz:
But says when people steal more expensive items from
  • 2:36 - 2:40
work and do it frequently something more troubling is usually behind it.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    Dr. Gerald Shiener:
It can escalate. Sometimes people get mad at their employers
  • 2:43 - 2:49
and they act out their resentment by taking things, or taking money.
  • 2:49 - 2:53
    Kevin Dietz:
Lois McLachlan apparently wasn't satisfied with stealing just the unused equipment
  • 2:53 - 2:58
laying around the office. She started convincing vendors to use corporate credit cards
  • 2:58 - 3:01
to buy new equipment that she would also sell on the Internet.
  • 3:01 - 3:07
After a year of reselling GM property online her scheme was uncovered her world unravel.
  • 3:07 - 3:14
Fired from her former senior executive support job and now facing federal charges that could land her in prison for up to five years.
  • 3:14 - 3:19
Could we talk to you for a sec Lois? We tried to ask Lois about the allegations and get her side of the story,
  • 3:19 - 3:26
but when she saw our Defenders cameras she'd beelined it for her front door refusing to come out an answer any questions.
  • 3:26 - 3:33
Dr. Shiener said if you feel tempted to steal from work seek help now before it becomes a federal offense.
  • 3:33 - 3:38
    Dr. Gerald Shiener:
Once you cross that line uh there's another theory that deep down
  • 3:38 - 3:42
inside you feel so bad about it that you escalate and escalate until you get caught.
  • 3:42 - 3:46
    Kevin Dietz:
We contacted General Motors about the theft and their workplace policies.
  • 3:46 - 3:50
They say they have no comment on any legal matters involving employees.
  • 3:50 - 3:55
To see the entire criminal complaint and get all the details you can go to our
