0:00:19.918,0:00:21.085 Thank you. 0:00:21.086,0:00:23.561 The last talk was about 0:00:23.562,0:00:27.615 electronic technology[br]and enhancing the brain. 0:00:28.306,0:00:31.928 My talk's about an old technology[br]enhancing the brain; 0:00:31.929,0:00:34.801 an old technology[br]that of course, you all know and love, 0:00:34.802,0:00:36.524 and that's called drugs. 0:00:36.525,0:00:38.181 But I'll come to that in a minute. 0:00:38.182,0:00:39.768 I'm going to start with the brain 0:00:39.769,0:00:43.175 because it's the most complex[br]and evolved element 0:00:43.176,0:00:44.665 in the whole universe. 0:00:44.666,0:00:48.562 It's what got you here today,[br]and hopefully, will get you home tonight. 0:00:48.829,0:00:51.789 A single mouse brain has[br]more computing power 0:00:51.790,0:00:54.272 than all the computers on Earth today. 0:00:54.273,0:00:58.894 Your brains are at least[br]a million times more powerful. 0:00:59.622,0:01:02.332 But unfortunately, it can go wrong. 0:01:02.333,0:01:04.434 Over the last few years, 0:01:04.435,0:01:09.570 we've discovered the scale of problems[br]that brain disorders produce. 0:01:11.039,0:01:16.950 The sum total of illness and cost[br]to society from brain disorders 0:01:16.951,0:01:19.958 is greater than that from cancer, 0:01:19.959,0:01:22.835 cardio-vascular disease,[br]and diabetes put together. 0:01:22.836,0:01:24.487 You see on the graph there 0:01:24.488,0:01:28.612 it's the equivalent each year[br]to nearly 800 billion euros. 0:01:28.613,0:01:31.716 It is if we're paying off[br]the Greek debt every year 0:01:31.717,0:01:35.616 in the burden of illness[br]produced by brain disorders. 0:01:35.973,0:01:42.062 We know that investment in these disorders[br]is not matching the enormous burden. 0:01:42.063,0:01:46.545 Here, you can see[br]on the left hand graph, the red circle; 0:01:46.546,0:01:52.302 'brain disorders' are way outside[br]the predicted line of investment. 0:01:52.303,0:01:54.385 They're the largest disability, 0:01:54.386,0:01:57.292 and the investment is[br]disproportionately low. 0:01:57.293,0:02:00.352 On the right-hand side, you can see[br]one of the reasons for this. 0:02:00.353,0:02:03.281 You can see the attrition rate for drugs 0:02:03.282,0:02:06.551 that go through discovery[br]into development. 0:02:06.552,0:02:09.270 Look at the second cylinder there. 0:02:09.270,0:02:14.612 You can see that from [br]200 Alzheimer's drugs in development, 0:02:14.613,0:02:17.617 only one reaches the clinic. 0:02:17.618,0:02:21.180 The brain is[br]a very difficult organ to treat. 0:02:22.655,0:02:24.329 Why does the brain go wrong? 0:02:24.330,0:02:26.707 It goes wrong[br]because of external influences: 0:02:26.708,0:02:29.379 malnutrition, still a big problem; 0:02:29.380,0:02:33.192 parental and other abuse[br]- psychological and physical -; 0:02:33.193,0:02:35.681 toxins - particularly alcohol. 0:02:35.682,0:02:39.632 These are images of my own research[br]showing a normal brain at the top 0:02:39.633,0:02:43.375 and a brain severely damaged[br]by alcohol misuse lower down. 0:02:43.376,0:02:47.421 Infections such as meningitis,[br]encephalitis are still common, 0:02:47.431,0:02:49.888 and trauma is a massive problem 0:02:49.889,0:02:53.215 in terms of leading[br]to long-term brain damage 0:02:53.216,0:02:55.174 particularly in young men. 0:02:55.175,0:02:58.356 And then, there are internal aspects[br]of the brain development 0:02:58.357,0:03:01.012 that can go wrong:[br]related conditions like autism. 0:03:01.013,0:03:04.175 You can have acquired[br]abnormalities like epilepsy 0:03:04.176,0:03:07.078 and there are age-related changes[br]such as dementia. 0:03:10.075,0:03:14.054 But the real focus of my talk today[br]is how the brain limits itself 0:03:14.055,0:03:19.155 and how we can perhaps expand its capacity[br]or take away the limit it puts on itself. 0:03:19.156,0:03:22.432 Your brain is most flexible[br]when you're a baby. 0:03:22.433,0:03:24.078 Some people would argue 0:03:24.079,0:03:28.378 that the whole process of education[br]is about taking away flexibility 0:03:28.379,0:03:33.065 and forcing every one of you[br]to think and behave in the same way. 0:03:33.066,0:03:35.163 It's about getting conformity of process 0:03:35.164,0:03:36.734 which of course is useful 0:03:36.735,0:03:39.846 if you're trying to speak a language[br]the same way as other people, 0:03:39.966,0:03:41.611 but may not be useful 0:03:41.612,0:03:46.190 if it limits how you can deal with[br]other things such as problems. 0:03:46.191,0:03:49.980 And also, the constraining of the brain[br]in itself can lead to problems; 0:03:49.981,0:03:52.285 if there is not enough of it[br]in the right place, 0:03:52.292,0:03:55.787 you get disorders[br]such as ADHD and schizophrenia. 0:03:55.788,0:03:57.783 If you get excessive constraints, 0:03:57.792,0:04:01.376 you can end up with disorders[br]like OCD and addiction. 0:04:01.377,0:04:05.502 And also the resilience[br]in the brain can be impaired, 0:04:05.503,0:04:09.624 and that will lead to disorders[br]such as anxiety and depression. 0:04:10.404,0:04:15.826 The core of my talk really is showing you[br]how we can now understand 0:04:15.835,0:04:19.913 the limitations that the brain[br]constrains the mind with 0:04:19.914,0:04:21.616 through using drugs. 0:04:21.617,0:04:24.829 This research really goes back[br]to the 1950s 0:04:24.834,0:04:28.543 and the personal experience[br]of this man, Aldous Huxley, 0:04:28.544,0:04:31.817 who used peyote and used[br]LSD, psychedelic drugs, 0:04:31.818,0:04:33.829 to understand his mind. 0:04:33.830,0:04:36.739 He wrote about it in the book[br]"The Doors of Perception," 0:04:36.740,0:04:40.201 and he used this quote from William Blake 0:04:40.202,0:04:43.690 to explain how these drugs[br]changed his mind. 0:04:43.691,0:04:46.749 He said, "If the doors[br]of perception were cleansed, 0:04:46.750,0:04:50.080 everything would appear[br]to man as it is, Infinite. 0:04:50.086,0:04:52.083 For man has closed himself up 0:04:52.084,0:04:56.576 till he sees all things through[br]narrow chinks of his cavern." 0:04:57.246,0:05:00.567 And Huxley realized[br]that what psychedelics do 0:05:00.568,0:05:04.439 is take away this phenomenon[br]that he inferred 0:05:04.440,0:05:09.163 which is that "the brain is[br]an instrument for focusing the mind." 0:05:09.164,0:05:12.436 Modern neuroscience[br]has shown they were right. 0:05:12.437,0:05:14.896 Because, what we now know 0:05:14.897,0:05:18.988 is that the brain creates[br]what the mind thinks it's doing. 0:05:18.989,0:05:20.853 Here is an example of vision. 0:05:20.854,0:05:23.670 You might be looking out[br]at a glorious sunset, 0:05:23.671,0:05:27.907 but in reality, the light rays[br]go into your retina 0:05:27.908,0:05:31.150 and are transformed[br]into a series of electrical impulses 0:05:31.151,0:05:33.840 which pass into parts in your brain. 0:05:33.841,0:05:37.128 And those parts of the brain[br]reconstruct an image 0:05:37.129,0:05:40.051 that they think you're seeing. 0:05:40.951,0:05:43.652 And that image, in the words of Blake, 0:05:43.653,0:05:47.345 is seeing through the constraints,[br]the chinks of the cavern 0:05:47.346,0:05:49.285 that your brain puts on it. 0:05:50.481,0:05:55.466 And if you have mental illness[br]- for instance, depression or addiction - 0:05:55.467,0:05:59.008 then what you see is also[br]constrained by your brain. 0:05:59.009,0:06:02.210 So depressed people don't see[br]even the brightness of the sky. 0:06:02.211,0:06:04.282 They see a dull grey. 0:06:04.283,0:06:07.147 And of course, people with addiction 0:06:07.148,0:06:09.514 when they see through[br]the chinks of their cavern, 0:06:09.515,0:06:13.039 they simply see the drugs[br]that they're addicted to. 0:06:15.142,0:06:18.993 Psychedelic drugs[br]take away that limitation. 0:06:18.994,0:06:23.041 They allow the mind to work[br]in a much more flexible way. 0:06:23.042,0:06:26.334 This is our research using psilocybin[br]in magic mushroom juice. 0:06:26.335,0:06:29.687 Those two images contain[br]the same number of connections. 0:06:29.688,0:06:32.079 But on the left-hand image, under placebo, 0:06:32.080,0:06:35.829 you see that most of the connections[br]are around the edge. 0:06:35.830,0:06:40.047 The brain talks to itself[br]in regional ways. 0:06:40.048,0:06:41.222 But under psilocybin, 0:06:41.223,0:06:44.637 there's a massive cross-talk,[br]much more integration; 0:06:44.638,0:06:48.179 parts of the brain which haven't talk[br]to each other since you were children 0:06:48.299,0:06:49.565 are able to engage. 0:06:49.566,0:06:51.770 And that's how people can get new insights 0:06:51.771,0:06:57.151 and also, potentially overcome damage[br]of dysfunction of the brain. 0:06:57.152,0:07:01.429 Here is another study using LSD[br]showing essentially the same thing. 0:07:01.430,0:07:03.122 On the left-hand side, 0:07:03.123,0:07:07.987 you see the visual cortex is[br]normally very local in how it works. 0:07:07.988,0:07:11.107 But under LSD,[br]when people have their eyes closed, 0:07:11.108,0:07:15.517 they can see enormously vivid,[br]interesting sets of images. 0:07:15.518,0:07:19.484 And that's because the brain is[br]much more interconnected under LSD 0:07:19.485,0:07:20.908 than normal. 0:07:21.495,0:07:23.660 Here you see that the visual cortex 0:07:23.661,0:07:27.454 connects to most of the rest[br]of the brain in that state. 0:07:28.276,0:07:33.731 We've been able to utilize this liberation[br]of processing of the brain, 0:07:33.732,0:07:35.416 produced by psychedelics, 0:07:35.417,0:07:37.035 to treat people with depression. 0:07:37.036,0:07:39.294 Here is a study published last year 0:07:39.295,0:07:41.522 where we took people with depression 0:07:41.523,0:07:44.291 who failed two previous[br]anti-depressive treatments, 0:07:44.292,0:07:46.695 and also had failed psychotherapy. 0:07:46.696,0:07:49.128 They were given[br]a single dose of psilocybin, 0:07:49.129,0:07:52.181 and you can see there, that a week later, 0:07:52.182,0:07:54.366 all of them had recovered to some extend, 0:07:54.367,0:07:57.496 and half of them were now[br]in a state of remission. 0:07:57.497,0:07:59.195 They were in the yellow bar there, 0:07:59.196,0:08:02.159 which shows that their depression[br]has actually gone away. 0:08:02.160,0:08:03.908 And that's not the first evidence 0:08:03.909,0:08:07.590 that psychedelics have therapy[br]or have therapeutic uses. 0:08:07.591,0:08:10.337 We also have evidence[br]from around the world 0:08:10.338,0:08:14.456 that psilocybin can be useful in helping[br]people deal with alcohol dependence, 0:08:14.457,0:08:18.326 with smoking dependence,[br]with obsessive compulsive disorder. 0:08:18.327,0:08:19.627 And most recently, 0:08:19.628,0:08:23.117 two major studies showing[br]it can help people come to terms 0:08:23.118,0:08:25.296 with the anxiety and the depression 0:08:25.297,0:08:29.808 which almost always accompany[br]a diagnosis of a terminal illness. 0:08:29.809,0:08:33.448 So, these drugs can have[br]potentially enormous opportunities 0:08:33.448,0:08:36.330 for helping people deal[br]with mental distress. 0:08:37.462,0:08:40.482 It's not just psychedelics[br]that can have that potential. 0:08:40.484,0:08:43.541 Many illegal drugs have medical uses. 0:08:43.542,0:08:46.751 So for non-psychedelics[br]such as MDMA, ecstasy, 0:08:46.761,0:08:50.184 where there is good evidence[br]in post-traumatic stress disorder 0:08:50.185,0:08:52.934 and also some studies[br]going on in addiction. 0:08:52.935,0:08:54.654 And of course, there is cannabis 0:08:54.655,0:08:57.381 where we have a range[br]of different disorders 0:08:57.382,0:09:00.584 from pain, spasticity, cancer, epilepsy, 0:09:00.588,0:09:03.769 inflammatory diseases,[br]and also sleep disorders. 0:09:03.770,0:09:08.158 All of these, potentially, are amenable[br]to treatment with cannabis. 0:09:09.629,0:09:11.753 So, why don't we use these drugs? 0:09:12.363,0:09:17.604 That's because the WHL and the UN[br]have said they are too dangerous, 0:09:17.605,0:09:19.321 which is certainly untrue. 0:09:19.322,0:09:20.705 I can tell you categorically 0:09:20.706,0:09:23.911 none of our patients died[br]in the experiments we did on them. 0:09:24.701,0:09:27.557 Most of our governments[br]perpetuate this lie. 0:09:28.067,0:09:32.279 And many of us - hopefully, not you -[br]have closed minds. 0:09:32.280,0:09:36.353 We do not want to believe[br]that these might have therapeutic utility. 0:09:37.051,0:09:39.423 So I want to say to you now, 0:09:39.424,0:09:42.584 surely now: you, if not everyone, 0:09:43.861,0:09:45.456 should accept the fact 0:09:45.457,0:09:50.391 that these drugs potentially[br]could be very important medicines. 0:09:50.392,0:09:53.790 For the sake of the millions of people[br]in the world who could be helped, 0:09:53.910,0:09:56.497 it's time to say there should be no limits 0:09:56.498,0:10:00.512 to the therapeutic research[br]we do with these drugs. 0:10:00.513,0:10:01.846 Thank you. 0:10:01.847,0:10:03.009 (Applause)
