Claudia Goldin | Women in Economics

  • Not Synced
    When you do economic research,
    you have three pieces.
  • Not Synced
I think of them as balls
  • Not Synced
    that I want floating up
    all the time.
  • Not Synced
    I'm juggling them,
  • Not Synced
and one of them is the idea.
  • Not Synced
    I have to begin with
    "What's the question,
  • Not Synced
    what's important?"
  • Not Synced
    - [Narrator] Economists!
  • Not Synced
Not a group with a lot
    of Marys, Natashas, or Juanitas,
  • Not Synced
    and that's caused
    a lot of controversy.
  • Not Synced
    However, what's often overlooked
    are the actual female economists
  • Not Synced
    who are economics forward
    by addressing real world issues.
  • Not Synced
    Welcome to Women in Economics.
  • Not Synced
    - [Ilyana] One thing I definitely
    learned from Claudia
  • Not Synced
    is to approach economic
    research like a detective.
  • Not Synced
    I think, especially,
  • Not Synced
    when you're working
    with economic history,
  • Not Synced
    when you can't just download
    a cleaned-up dataset.
  • Not Synced
You really have to go searching
    open, dusty boxes
  • Not Synced
    and look under tocks.
  • Not Synced
    - [Lawrence] She is the consummate,
    economic historian.
  • Not Synced
She has been the innovator and pioneer
  • Not Synced
    on bringing economical logic
    and historical and better data
  • Not Synced
    to understanding
    women's role in the economy,
  • Not Synced
and then she is a fantastic
    labor economist,
  • Not Synced
who had been a leader on work on understanding inequality.
  • Not Synced
Claudia Dale Goldin was born in 1946 in the Bronx.
  • Not Synced
She was a problem-solver from the beginning.
  • Not Synced
As a child, she avoided the New York City heat
  • Not Synced
by spending her summer days playing cards
  • Not Synced
or reading in air-conditioned department stores.
  • Not Synced
And while she always knew she wanted to be a scientist of some kind,
  • Not Synced
she wasn't always set on economics.
  • Not Synced
SHe'll tell stories to me about when she first went to the Natural History Museum
  • Not Synced
when she was living in the Bronx
  • Not Synced
and fell in love with mummies
  • Not Synced
and thought that archeology was going to be her passion.
  • Not Synced
    But then she discovered microbiology,
  • Not Synced
and she suddently realized that microscopes uncovered a whole new world of discovery for her.
  • Not Synced
It wasn't until she actually went to college at Cornell
  • Not Synced
that she first got introduced to economics.
  • Not Synced
I decidede to become an economist
  • Not Synced
because I took an economics class from an amazing person named Fred Kahn.
  • Not Synced
He was so excited about the field of industrial organization
  • Not Synced
    and product markets and regulation
  • Not Synced
    that it was infectious.
  • Not Synced
And in fact, when I went to graduate school at the University of Chicago,
  • Not Synced
I went there to study Industrial Organization.
  • Not Synced
Under the mentorship of Bob Fogel,
  • Not Synced
    Claudia studied AMerican Economic History,
  • Not Synced
    particularly the economics of slavery
and the post civil war south.
  • Not Synced
SHe had to travel to some southern states to gather archival materials for this research.
  • Not Synced
Goldin didn't approach this trip like a traditional economist.
  • Not Synced
She thought what I should do is hitchhike between the different cities in the south.
  • Not Synced
She met somebody in one of the archives
  • Not Synced
who let her stay at their place,
  • Not Synced
and when she came back, her advisor asked her for a list of the receipts and expenses
  • Not Synced
    associated with the trip,
  • Not Synced
she had no clue that you were supposed to actually stay in hotels and pay for actual travel,
  • Not Synced
    and you could get reimbursements.
  • Not Synced
By actually staying with the archivists and getting access to archives
  • Not Synced
and knowledge that you wouldn't have had,
  • Not Synced
it probably created [ ] and understanding that wouldn't have been possible
  • Not Synced
if you were going through usual channels.
Title:
Claudia Goldin | Women in Economics
Description:

This episode of Women in Economics profiles Claudia Goldin, pioneering economic historian, labor economist, and first female economist to be offered tenure at Harvard.

She was drawn to the sciences at a young age but switched to focusing on economics after taking an economics class with Alfred Kahn at Cornell as an undergrad.

Her most well-known research covers the evolution of women’s labor force participation, but her expertise is by no means confined to this topic. She’s also researched extensively on the economics of education, inequality, and automation.
