0:10 - 0:14The second largest Mexican-American
community in the country. -
0:16 - 0:18I grew up in the western suburbs
of Chicago, -
0:18 - 0:20but Little Village was
a second home to me. -
0:21 - 0:25I still remember my parents
bringing me over in the summer's evenings -
0:25 - 0:29to La Veguita, other taquerías
and panaderías on 26th Street. -
0:30 - 0:33Many of these family-owned businesses,

0:33 - 0:35they are cooking the food
exactly the way -
0:35 - 0:37that is being cooked in their homeland,
-
0:37 - 0:39and it's a way to stay connected
to the motherland, -
0:39 - 0:41and remember those humble roots.

0:48 - 0:51There is over a hundred years of history

0:51 - 0:54between Mexicans and Chicago.

0:54 - 0:58A lot of the first immigrants were
from Western and Northern Mexico, -
0:58 - 1:00like Guanajuato, Michuacán, Nuevo León.

1:02 - 1:03After the Mexican Revolution,

1:03 - 1:06this new nation's identity
was created with the muralists, -
1:06 - 1:08the vibrant colors...

1:08 - 1:09You cannot escape from the art world

1:09 - 1:11whenever you go eat.

1:13 - 1:16(Laura Gutiérrez) In 1977,
when my father started, -
1:16 - 1:18this was a Bohemian and Czech community.

1:19 - 1:21The Spanish were starting
to gradually come in. -
1:22 - 1:24Ever since I can remember,
-
1:24 - 1:26my nightly ritual was
be going onto the restaurant, -
1:26 - 1:28two flour tortillas,
-
1:28 - 1:29our famous refried beans,
-
1:29 - 1:31and grandma's mole sauce.

1:32 - 1:34The tacos sabinas,
-
1:34 - 1:36they are smothered with refried beans,
-
1:36 - 1:37Chihuahua cheese,
-
1:37 - 1:38and a rib eye steak
-
1:38 - 1:40prepared with tomatoes,
onions and jalapeños. -
1:40 - 1:42Machacado a la mexicana
-
1:42 - 1:43is from the northern part of Mexico.
-
1:43 - 1:45It's a flank steak
-
1:45 - 1:46dehydrated,
-
1:46 - 1:48prepared with onions, tomatoes,
jalapeños and eggs. -
1:50 - 1:54Our restaurant is based on friendship.

1:54 - 1:56We have daily customers that come in,
-
1:56 - 1:58we know them by name,
-
1:58 - 2:00and just because of our loyal customers,
-
2:00 - 2:02word of mouth is the best publicity.

and Little Village is amazing. -
4:12 - 4:14You have constantly new immigrants.

4:14 - 4:17You have people like me
that are first generation Latino -
4:17 - 4:18--we live in two worlds.

4:19 - 4:20I have two daughters.

4:20 - 4:23That is my mission for them
to embrace the homeland -
4:23 - 4:27and also be proud to be Chicagoans.
