Hi, I'm Jay Sullivan from Mozilla and I'm here to talk about Firefox OS.
  • 0:08 - 0:11
Firefox OS is the new free mobile operating system from Mozilla.
  • 0:11 - 0:14
It's built with web technologies like HTML 5
  • 0:14 - 0:18
and built on web principles as openness and freedom for all to innovate.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
So I'm going to give you a little demo of Firefox OS,
  • 0:21 - 0:24
tell you a little bit about who we're working with and how we're working together.
  • 0:24 - 0:26
Let's take a look. I'll show you a few devices.
  • 0:26 - 0:28
This one's made by TCL Alcatel
  • 0:28 - 0:31
and here's another one in white.
  • 0:31 - 0:35
And we've also got one here from ZTE, it's a blue device.
  • 0:35 - 0:40
So, yeah, you'll see we're going to show the Firefox brand and colors.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
It's going to be a lot of fun to interact with this hardware.
  • 0:43 - 0:50
So let's do a demo. I've also got another phone here made by a company called Geeksphone in Spain.
  • 0:50 - 0:53
They've built some of the developer phones that developers have been using.
  • 0:53 - 0:58
Ok, so what you're going to see is everything a user would expect in a great smartphone experience.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
I'm going to show you how developers can use HTML 5 to build amazing things
  • 1:02 - 1:06
and also show you something new that really breaks down the barrier
  • 1:06 - 1:11
between the web and apps to give users a great, a great new experience.
  • 1:11 - 1:16
So this is the TCL Alcatel phone running Firefox OS.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
So, we're going to unlock the phone.
  • 1:20 - 1:25
And what you'll see immediately is you've got your telephone, you've got your sms,
  • 1:25 - 1:29
you can get on the web with Firefox and we have Facebook bundled with the device.
  • 1:29 - 1:34
Now, you can swipe over and you'll see a bunch of my commonly used applications.
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    Some of these are pre-installed
  • 1:35 - 1:39
and some of these I downloaded from the Firefox marketplace.
  • 1:39 - 1:42
So let's take a look at some of the basics.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
I've got the Firefox Marketplace, we have email client of course.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    Let's pull out the contacts.
  • 1:47 - 1:51
So what you'll see is that we've embedded social deeply into this device,
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    because as people get online,
  • 1:53 - 1:55
I'm sure they want to call and send each other text messages,
  • 1:55 - 1:59
but they're also deeply involved with Facebook and Twitter and other social applications.
  • 1:59 - 2:03
So what you'll see is, you know, I've been able to import my Facebook contacts
  • 2:03 - 2:05
so that associates a picture with every contact,
  • 2:05 - 2:09
and in addition to, you know, simply making a phone call, which I can do,
  • 2:09 - 2:14
I can also go ahead and post on someone's wall or send him a Facebook message.
  • 2:14 - 2:17
So, now I'm in airplane mode, I'm going to unlock the phone.
  • 2:17 - 2:20
Anyway, a lot of things that I want to do when I'm on the go,
  • 2:20 - 2:22
whether it's getting to my music
  • 2:22 - 2:25
or browse through my albums there,
  • 2:25 - 2:28
or looking at my family photos, I can do those things
  • 2:28 - 2:32
even though I am disconnected, so that's really important.
  • 2:32 - 2:34
So what I'm going to show you is something we're building
  • 2:34 - 2:37
that really breaks down the walls between the web and apps.
  • 2:37 - 2:40
The web is great because it gives you instant access to all the information out there
  • 2:40 - 2:44
and apps are great because they have a beautiful, easy-to-use form factor.
  • 2:44 - 2:48
So we looked at what can you do if you combine what's great about those two things.
  • 2:48 - 2:52
I'm going to swipe to the left here and I'm going to do a search.
  • 2:52 - 2:54
Let me search for the movie Skyfall.
  • 2:54 - 2:58
And what you'll see is that my phone immediately transforms itself.
  • 2:58 - 3:00
Now it's all about movies, it's really dynamic.
  • 3:00 - 3:03
So I get access to, you know, movie review websites,
  • 3:03 - 3:08
I can buy tickets with Fandango, I can read about it on Wikipedia, IMDB.
  • 3:08 - 3:13
What's interesting here is I may never have seen those applications before.
  • 3:13 - 3:15
They're shown to me in real time based on what I care about.
  • 3:15 - 3:21
So this is a really new way of thinking about how the web meets apps to give you something new and amazing.
  • 3:21 - 3:25
And you're going to love this because it's instant gratification based on what you want and when you want it.
  • 3:25 - 3:29
However, we do have a standard marketplace that users are going to expect
  • 3:29 - 3:35
and that's going to give developers a place to submit their apps to get discovery, ratings and reviews, etc.,
  • 3:35 - 3:40
and I'll show you that on the ZTE phone. It's called the Firefox Marketplace.
  • 3:40 - 3:47
Firefox Marketplace has everything a user expects in terms of categories, ratings, reviews, discovery.
  • 3:47 - 3:51
But what's important about our model, is that you don't have to use the Firefox Marketplace.
  • 3:51 - 3:56
We expect there to be multiple marketplaces and in the spirit of complete openness,
  • 3:56 - 4:01
any developer can distribute an app directly to users without using a market place at all.
  • 4:02 - 4:07
And we think that's a very important web principle that's going to make innovation happen all over the place.
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    So that's Firefox Marketplace.
  • 4:09 - 4:13
So, thanks for watching. I think it's a really big day for Firefox OS.
  • 4:13 - 4:15
We introduced a whole set of network operator partners,
  • 4:15 - 4:20
OEMs, chips app vendors and app developers, and there's a lot more to come.
  • 4:20 - 4:24
So keep your eyes on Firefox OS. It's going to be amazing.
