Introduction - Web Development

  • 0:00 - 0:02
Welcome to lesson five. In lesson five we're going to
  • 0:02 - 0:05
talk about how to make your website communicate with, not just
  • 0:05 - 0:08
with humans but also with other computers by building what
  • 0:08 - 0:12
we call an API or Application Programming Interface, which is really
  • 0:12 - 0:16
just a fancy way of saying instead of generating HTML
  • 0:16 - 0:19
that we send to browsers that ultimately just get read by
  • 0:19 - 0:23
humans, we're going to send data in formats XML or JSON
  • 0:23 - 0:25
which are similar to html, but are designed to be read
  • 0:25 - 0:28
by computers instead. In this lesson we're going to add a
  • 0:28 - 0:31
feature to ASCIIChan, that will actually allow you to see where
  • 0:31 - 0:36
users are submitting images from, using the Google maps API.
  • 0:36 - 0:39
And in the homework for this lesson, we're going to be adding
  • 0:39 - 0:42
the JSON output to your own blog. So if somebody
  • 0:42 - 0:45
wanted to build a service that used some data from your
  • 0:45 - 0:47
blog that you thought was important, they can actually write a
  • 0:47 - 0:50
program to fetch your blog, manipulate the data however they like,
  • 0:50 - 0:53
and then build their own web service on top of that, which is actually
  • 0:53 - 0:56
how a lot of the internet works. So, let's go ahead and jump right in.
