    The key to understanding this simply is this equation.
  • 0:08 - 0:18
    This is what tells us that the standard scores have a regression coefficient ≤ 1.
  • 0:18 - 0:25
    We said it's 1, and so because it's not 1 it must be less than that.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    That means the standard score shrinks.
  • 0:28 - 0:35
    If the standard score shrinks that means if it's negative it moves this way.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    If it's positive it moves this way.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    That means there is more area under here,
  • 0:40 - 0:45
    so this has to be a little more area than this.
  • 0:45 - 0:49
    Therefore, y will always be less extreme.
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    This is the concept of regression.
  • 0:51 - 0:55
    That is regression to the mean.
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    If someone is exceptional in one thing,
  • 0:58 - 1:02
    we will always predict that person to be a bit less exceptional
  • 1:02 -
    in that other thing if there is any error.
