Laughter is the best medicine - having wonderful ideas | Simon Link | TEDxAmanaAcademy

  • 0:26 - 0:28
Hello, my name is Simon Link,
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    and I think that making
    people laugh is really fun.
  • 0:31 - 0:35
I would like to share with you
how I got inspired to make people laugh.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
I got inspired by my dad
  • 0:38 - 0:42
    because he's funny
and makes me laugh all the time.
  • 0:42 - 0:47
I also got inspired from my grandpa
    because he tells funny stories.
  • 0:51 - 0:52
I think that people like to laugh
  • 0:52 - 0:56
    because it's really fun
    and makes people feel happy.
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    You should make people laugh
because it makes them feel happy.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
It also makes them feel better
    when they are crying.
  • 1:04 - 1:08
You may want to make people laugh
because it can get you new friends.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
You feel happy when you make people laugh.
  • 1:13 - 1:17
I want everyone in my school to laugh,
so I'm going to do this thing
  • 1:17 - 1:19
called "The Joke of the Day,"
  • 1:19 - 1:24
    where every Monday someone goes
on the announcements and tells a joke.
  • 1:24 - 1:29
This would be a good idea because
it connects to having wonderful ideas
  • 1:29 - 1:33
    because it's a good idea,
but kids will also think of them as jokes.
  • 1:38 - 1:43
It also connects to empathy and caring
because you make people feel better
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    because you care for them.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
    Now I'm going to try
and make you laugh a little bit.
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    (Laughter)
  • 1:55 - 1:58
What do people from the olden days say
    when they see something funny?
  • 1:59 - 2:00
    (Audience) What?
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    Simon Link: That's historical!
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    (Laughter)
  • 2:06 - 2:09
Why did the farmer name his pig "Ink"?
  • 2:09 - 2:10
    (Audience) Why?
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    SL: Because it kept running
    out of the pen!
  • 2:12 - 2:15
    (Laughter)
  • 2:15 - 2:17
SL: Why did the elephant cross the road?
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    (Audience) Why?
  • 2:19 - 2:22
SL: Because the chicken was on vacation!
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    (Laughter)
  • 2:27 - 2:31
The other day my teacher asked me,
    "If you have one dollar
  • 2:31 - 2:34
and asked your dad for another dollar,
how much money would you have?"
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    I said, "One dollar."
  • 2:36 - 2:40
My teacher said, "Sorry son, it seems
as if you don't know your addition."
  • 2:40 - 2:44
    I said, "I know addition,
but you don't know my dad!"
  • 2:44 - 2:47
    (Laughter)
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    (Applause)
  • 2:53 - 2:58
One time I asked my teacher, "You punish
people for things they didn't do?"
  • 2:58 - 3:01
The teacher said, "No! Of course not!"
  • 3:01 - 3:05
    I said, "Good, because I didn't
    do my homework!"
  • 3:05 - 3:08
    (Laughter)
  • 3:08 - 3:11
    (Applause)
  • 3:12 - 3:17
What happened when the teacher tied all
    the students' shoelaces together?
  • 3:17 - 3:18
    (Audience) What?
  • 3:18 - 3:20
SL: They had a class trip!
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    (Laughter)
  • 3:25 - 3:28
What do you call a pig that knows karate?
  • 3:28 - 3:30
    A pork chop.
  • 3:30 - 3:33
    (Laughter)
  • 3:35 - 3:37
Why do bees have sticky hair?
  • 3:37 - 3:38
    (Audience) Why?
  • 3:38 - 3:40
SL: Because they use honey combs.
  • 3:40 - 3:43
    (Laughter)
  • 3:44 - 3:46
How do you make a tissue dance?
  • 3:46 - 3:47
    (Audience) Oh no.
  • 3:47 - 3:49
SL: You put a little boogie in it.
  • 3:49 - 3:52
    (Laughter)
  • 3:52 - 3:55
    (Applause)
  • 4:00 - 4:04
Last night I had a dream
    that I ate a 30-pound marshmallow.
  • 4:04 - 4:07
When I woke up, my pillow was gone!
  • 4:07 - 4:10
    (Laughter)
  • 4:11 - 4:15
This summer I got a little injured
and I had to have stiches in my lip.
  • 4:15 - 4:18
My lip was all swollen and big.
  • 4:18 - 4:22
    It looked like I
    was about to kiss someone!
  • 4:23 - 4:26
Do you know what my cousin
    wanted to call me?
  • 4:26 - 4:27
    (Audience) What?
  • 4:27 - 4:28
    SL: Smoochie!
  • 4:28 - 4:31
    (Laughter)
  • 4:37 - 4:41
I was thinking when people asked me
how I got stitches in my lip,
  • 4:41 - 4:45
    I wouldn't tell them
    how it actually happened.
  • 4:45 - 4:47
So here are some things I would tell them.
  • 4:47 - 4:55
My brother was fishing and he swung back
and the hook hooked onto my lip.
  • 4:55 - 4:58
    Then he swung it forward,
and it threw me into the ocean!
  • 4:59 - 5:02
    Then, I went bonkers
and tried to kiss a shark.
  • 5:02 - 5:05
    (Laughter)
  • 5:08 - 5:10
The shark bit my lip and threw me to land.
  • 5:14 - 5:17
Or ... it happened like this.
  • 5:17 - 5:21
    I was cutting some tomatoes
    and I accidentally swung
  • 5:21 - 5:24
    the knife too high
and it knocked my eye out
  • 5:24 - 5:26
and my eye scraped my lip.
  • 5:26 - 5:29
    You may be wondering
why I still have two eyes.
  • 5:29 - 5:32
It's because I got my eyes
    sewed back to my brain.
  • 5:32 - 5:34
    (Laughter)
  • 5:36 - 5:41
One time, I was minding my own business,
combing my hair in the bathroom.
  • 5:41 - 5:44
And my dad comes in and shouted, "Boo!"
  • 5:44 - 5:47
    It scared me so much
that it made me throw the comb.
  • 5:47 - 5:48
The comb bounced off the mirror
  • 5:48 - 5:51
    and landed in the kitty
    litter box in the bathtub.
  • 5:55 - 5:58
    What is the skeleton's
    favorite instrument?
  • 5:58 - 5:59
    (Audience) What?
  • 5:59 - 6:01
    SL: The trombone.
  • 6:01 - 6:03
    (Laughter)
  • 6:03 - 6:07
    When my grandpa was little,
    he wasn't very smart.
  • 6:07 - 6:10
    (Laughter)
  • 6:11 - 6:14
He had a lamp in his house
that had four lights in it.
  • 6:14 - 6:16
One of the bulbs was missing.
  • 6:16 - 6:20
His parents told him never to stick
    his finger in the socket.
  • 6:20 - 6:24
    He needed to know why,
  • 6:24 - 6:29
so he stuck a metal hairpin in it
and got shot across the room
  • 6:29 - 6:32
    and slammed into the wall!
  • 6:32 - 6:35
    (Laughter)
  • 6:36 - 6:42
Another time his uncle told him never
to go behind the cow and pull its tail.
  • 6:42 - 6:48
As I said before, he needed to know why.
  • 6:48 - 6:53
    So, you may be thinking
    this will be going badly.
  • 6:53 - 6:54
    You may be right.
  • 6:54 - 7:00
He went behind the cow, pulled its tail,
and got kicked into a pile of cow manure!
  • 7:00 - 7:03
    (Laughter)
  • 7:07 - 7:11
Thank you. I hope I've inspired you
    to make people laugh.
  • 7:11 - 7:15
They say laughter is the best medicine.
Go forth and make someone laugh today.
  • 7:15 - 7:17
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
  • 7:17 - 7:19
    (Applause)
  • 7:19 - 7:21
    (Cheers)
