The Aquatram: Ziad Guenoun at TEDxCasablanca

  • 0:10 - 0:14
Hi. My name is Ziad Guenoun,
    I am 12 years old.
  • 0:14 - 0:18
Before I start, I'd like to tell you
    how I ended up here.
  • 0:19 - 0:22
A few months ago, I was watching TV,
  • 0:22 - 0:24
when mom came and told me:
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    "Ziad, did you show
    your 3D animations to someone ? "
  • 0:27 - 0:28
    " Yes, mom, why ? "
  • 0:29 - 0:32
"I was just asked by an organizer from TEDx
  • 0:32 - 0:36
if you want to participate to give
a vision of Casablanca in 2050."
  • 0:36 - 0:39
"What?" So then, I bugged, I'm telling you!
  • 0:39 - 0:41
But the topic litterelly captivated me.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
So I set myself the goal
    of rising to the challenge.
  • 0:46 - 0:47
That's why I am here today,
  • 0:48 - 0:51
to give you my vision of Casablanca in 2050.
  • 0:52 - 0:57
    (Applause)
  • 0:57 - 1:00
Yes, but in 2050, where will we live?
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    How will we get around?
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    Where will the energies
    we'll be using come from?
  • 1:10 - 1:13
But before talking about Casablanca in 2050,
  • 1:13 - 1:17
why not look at Casablanca today in 2012?
  • 1:18 - 1:21
Many of our neighborhoods look like this!
  • 1:23 - 1:27
The moment I get out of the house,
the first thing I see is this!
  • 1:29 - 1:33
Three quarters of what I breathe
[ fake coughing ] is this!
  • 1:35 - 1:38
Worst of all, there's not much greenery around!
  • 1:40 - 1:45
But if tomorrow Casablanca looked like that?
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    It rocks, right?
  • 1:50 - 1:53
But if we raze blocks to the ground to replace them
with parks, where are we going to live?
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    Green is beautiful, but
would we be sleeping the ground?
  • 1:56 - 1:59
I racked my brain a bit more...
  • 2:01 - 2:02
    ... and found the solution:
  • 2:03 - 2:06
In 2050, we would live here.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    On floating houses!
  • 2:09 - 2:13
    Those houses would float
    on buoys assembled together
  • 2:13 - 2:14
    to form floating neighborhoods
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    and they'd even be antiseismic.
  • 2:17 - 2:18
    Not bad, however,
  • 2:18 - 2:22
    swimming 2 km everyday
to go home, er, go to work,
  • 2:22 - 2:23
    is not ideal.
  • 2:24 - 2:26
So I looked back on today and I thought:
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    what's happening today?
  • 2:29 - 2:32
Sure there's this talk, but besides that?
  • 2:32 - 2:35
There's an even more important event
    for Casablanca residents:
  • 2:35 - 2:38
the movie premiere of The Hobbit !
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    Just kidding!
  • 2:40 - 2:43
It's the opening of the tramway, of course !
  • 2:43 - 2:45
So I combined this advanced technology,
  • 2:45 - 2:47
which really is as old as my great-grandparents,
  • 2:47 - 2:53
with the fact that we'll have to go from the sea
to the ground, so so as to get he Aquatram!
  • 2:55 - 2:56
    Let me clarify something here:
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    I made those images myself.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
You can't find them on Google.
    Aren't they good ?
  • 3:00 - 3:05
    (Applause)
  • 3:05 - 3:07
So, I get back to 2050,
  • 3:07 - 3:11
    the houseboats would use
    fully renewable energies
  • 3:11 - 3:14
such as hydropower thanks to wheels
    using ocean current energy,
  • 3:14 - 3:18
and solar thanks to solar panels.
  • 3:18 - 3:21
While wind power would be used
    to supply the dry land
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    thanks to off-shore farms.
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    Let's recap :
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    in 2050, we'll exploit
    the maritime space of Casablanca
  • 3:29 - 3:33
to extend the city and make it,
    why not, a megalopolis,
  • 3:34 - 3:37
    knowing that we'll also
    be using sea transport,
  • 3:37 - 3:40
that we'll be using fully renewable energies,
  • 3:40 - 3:43
and that we'll build more parks on dry land.
  • 3:43 - 3:44
Thank you so much for your attention.
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    Bye... See you in 2050.
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    (Applause)
