15 - LTI [Massive Teaching]
-
0:00 - 0:04LTI stands for Learning Tools
Interoperability. -
0:04 - 0:09It's a standard developed to facilitate
intercommunication of learning software. -
0:09 - 0:12Most websites nowadays are very complex
-
0:12 - 0:15and they're usually based
on several different separate services. -
0:16 - 0:19LTI allows you to play mix and match
with those services. -
0:20 - 0:24For instance, for a Coursera course,
as an instructor, -
0:24 - 0:26you can say that you don't like the forums
-
0:26 - 0:28and want to change them to something else.
-
0:29 - 0:32There's this other website, say Piazza,
that you like better, -
0:32 - 0:34and you find has better forums.
-
0:34 - 0:37You'd like to use that tool, but typically,
-
0:37 - 0:39you don't want your users to create
multiple accounts, -
0:39 - 0:41one for Coursera and one for Piazza.
-
0:42 - 0:44In this case, what you can do
is to use LTI -
0:45 - 0:48and set up Coursera as the tool consumer.
-
0:49 - 0:52LTI then does all the authentication for you,
-
0:52 - 0:55so the students only have to remember
one password. -
0:56 - 0:59As an instructor, you have to set up some
keys and password, -
0:59 - 1:04but then, to the students, everything
appears integrated into one website -
1:04 - 1:06and they don't need these extra passwords.
-
1:07 - 1:09Sometimes though, the effect is not so great.
-
1:09 - 1:13LTI does not change
the visual appearance of the forums, -
1:13 - 1:16so the effect might be a bit odd on the eyes.
-
1:16 - 1:19In addition, LTI maintains roles.
-
1:20 - 1:22For instance, in Coursera,
I'm the instructor, -
1:22 - 1:26which means I can see more information
about the students and things like that. -
1:26 - 1:31LTI knows to preserve that, so I also
automatically have more rights -
1:31 - 1:34in the LTI tool that I have installed.
-
1:35 - 1:40Finally, LTI can also allow more interaction
with the original LTI consumer. -
1:41 - 1:48For instance, the LTI tool can return a grade
that will be used back in the consumer.
