See & Hear: How to use verbs of perception - English In A Minute

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    Hi! Saskia for BBC
    Learning English here,
  • 0:03 - 0:05
    and today
I'm going to tell you about
  • 0:05 - 0:07
    how we use verbs
    of perception in English.
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    There are a number
    of these verbs
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    but I'm just going to
look at two with you now:
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    see and hear.
  • 0:13 - 0:16
    When we use these verbs,
    this is the form:
  • 0:16 - 0:18
    First, the verb
    of perception.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    Then, the object
    of the sentence.
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    Then we have either
  • 0:22 - 0:26
    the infinitive without to
    or the -ing form.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    Here's an example:
I heard him go down the stairs.
  • 0:29 - 0:30
    Or:
  • 0:30 - 0:33
I heard him going down the stairs.
  • 0:33 - 0:36
    There's a slight difference
    between these two forms:
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    When we use the infinitive,
it suggests that we hear or see
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    the whole action or event.
  • 0:41 - 0:46
Using the -ing form suggests that
we hear or see something in progress.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
'I saw her cross the street'
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    means I saw her cross
from one side to the other.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
'I saw her crossing the street'
  • 0:53 - 0:57
means I saw her in the middle
    - on the way across.
