08 - Why Now? [Massive Teaching]
-
0:00 - 0:01So why now?
-
0:01 - 0:04Why should MOOCs appear right now?
-
0:04 - 0:07Why is it different from previous
revolutions in educational technology? -
0:08 - 0:10Well to me, there are two trends.
-
0:10 - 0:12The first is that information is more and
-
0:12 - 0:16more accessible, and becoming cheaper, or
even free. -
0:16 - 0:20For instance, via Google Maps, anyone
anywhere in the world can now -
0:20 - 0:24access maps that just a few years ago
would be considered military grade. -
0:25 - 0:27Through Google Books anyone anywhere in
the world -
0:27 - 0:31can access the content of books relatively
easily. -
0:31 - 0:33Maybe some part of it if the content is
copyrighted. -
0:34 - 0:37MOOCs come at the right time for this.
-
0:37 - 0:39They simply make accessible to a much
wider -
0:39 - 0:42audience something that was so far pretty
closed. -
0:42 - 0:45University level material, about very high
level -
0:45 - 0:48topics, they open up the doors of
universities. -
0:49 - 0:53Note that I said course material, not
books, this is different. -
0:53 - 0:55Course material helps to bring someone up
to speed, in some -
0:55 - 0:59very pointed discipline where they might
not exist text book yet. -
1:00 - 1:02The value added by the MOOC, is that
-
1:02 - 1:06some of this information is pre-processed
by the professor. -
1:06 - 1:08The professor stands between all that
information and -
1:08 - 1:10the student to help the student navigate
it. -
1:11 - 1:16Also, the student benefits immediately
from an instant study group. -
1:16 - 1:17And like if they go to the library to
borrow a book. -
1:19 - 1:20Now this begs the question of why would
-
1:20 - 1:23anyone go through the effort of taking a
MOOC? -
1:23 - 1:25Well there are simply many reasons.
-
1:25 - 1:29One of them is just fun, some people are
just curious. -
1:29 - 1:32But one of them touches on the second
reason why MOOCs arrive now. -
1:33 - 1:38Well pretty simply, it used to be that you
could do a whole career in one company. -
1:38 - 1:42A few decades ago, that was possible but
that's certainly not true anymore. -
1:43 - 1:46It also used to be that you could do a
whole career -
1:46 - 1:49out of one degree, and that's becoming
less and less possible now. -
1:50 - 1:54Essentially, in the modern professional
world, you need to adapt. -
1:54 - 1:58More and more, what matters is the
individual's ability -
1:58 - 2:01to navigate this new landscape by
acquiring new skills. -
2:02 - 2:03Obviously MOOCs can help with that.
-
2:04 - 2:09The big question that is left with MOOCs,
is how to translate these new skills into -
2:09 - 2:12meaningful certificates, so the individual
can actually leverage -
2:12 - 2:15this training to a new job more easily.
-
2:15 - 2:19If you're a university professor, this is
true for you as well. -
2:20 - 2:22You need to adapt yourself to the
-
2:22 - 2:26revolution in your profession, that are
MOOCs. -
2:26 - 2:29If your tenured, you actually have no
incentive to do this -
2:29 - 2:32except if you want to do a better job when
teaching. -
2:33 - 2:37If you are not tenured yet the reality is
that you have every -
2:37 - 2:42disincentive to follow this evolution, and
rock the boat at your own institution. -
2:43 - 2:45Because you are always at risk for being
assessed -
2:45 - 2:49using older criteria that don't account
for the new technologies. -
2:51 - 2:53Now, I need to clarify one more thing now.
-
2:54 - 2:56To me, the fact that all this education
-
2:56 - 3:00is distributed for free and can benefit
people. -
3:00 - 3:05All over the world in myriads of ways, is
absolutely, phenomenally great. -
3:05 - 3:08And it will dramatically affect society as
well. -
3:09 - 3:10I don't want to downplay this.
-
3:11 - 3:15But it's really important to understand
that this is -
3:15 - 3:18purely and entirely a side effect, a nice
side effect -
3:18 - 3:21but it is a side effect, of the main
commercial -
3:21 - 3:26focus, which is higher education and
employment in developed markets.
