0:01 - 0:03[Sinister brass sound]
-
0:05 - 0:06- [Narrator] True!
-
0:07 - 0:08Nervous --
-
0:08 - 0:10very, very dreadfully nervous I am.
-
0:11 - 0:12But why will you say I'm mad?
-
0:13 - 0:16The disease has sharpened my senses --
-
0:17 - 0:19not destroyed, not dulled them.
-
0:20 - 0:23Above all was my sense of hearing acute.
-
0:24 - 0:27I heard all things
in heaven and in the earth. -
0:27 - 0:30And I heard many things in hell.
-
0:31 - 0:33How, then, am I mad?
-
0:34 - 0:36Hearken and observe how healthily, --
-
0:37 - 0:40how calmly I can tell you the whole story.
-
0:40 - 0:42[Sinister brass sound]
[Heart beats] -
0:47 - 0:50It is impossible to say how
the idea first entered my brain, -- -
0:51 - 0:52but once conceived, --
-
0:53 - 0:55it haunted me day and night.
-
0:56 - 0:57I loved the old man.
-
0:57 - 0:59He never wronged me.
-
0:59 - 1:01He never insulted me.
-
1:01 - 1:03But, I think it was the eye.
-
1:03 - 1:05He had the eye of a vulture.
-
1:06 - 1:08A pale blue eye, with a film over it.
-
1:08 - 1:11Whenever it fell upon me,
my blood ran cold. -
1:12 - 1:14And so, very gradually, --
-
1:15 - 1:18I made up my mind to take
the life of the old man, -- -
1:19 - 1:21and rid myself the eye forever.
-
1:23 - 1:24[Clapping sound]
-
1:25 - 1:27At this point, you fancy me mad.
-
1:27 - 1:29[Dark ambient sound]
-
1:29 - 1:32But how wisely I proceeded --
-
1:33 - 1:34with what caution, --
-
1:36 - 1:37with what foresight, --
-
1:38 - 1:39with what dissimulation, --
-
1:40 - 1:41I went to work.
-
1:44 - 1:47I did this for seven long nights.
-
1:47 - 1:50But I found the eye was always closed.
-
1:52 - 1:55And so, it was impossible to do the work.
-
1:56 - 1:58For it was not the old man
that vexed me, -- -
1:59 - 2:00but his evil eye.
-
2:00 - 2:02[Dark ambient sound intensifies]
-
2:09 - 2:12- And every morning, --
- Did you still sleep through the night? -
2:12 - 2:13
- when day broke, -
2:13 - 2:16Well, you’ve endured
this false gravity for so long. -
2:16 - 2:19- I offered only the esteem he deserved.
-
2:19 - 2:21It will be impossible
to replace your talents here. -
2:21 - 2:25- And he would have had
to be a very clever man indeed. -
2:25 - 2:29But, luckily, your training skills
have matched that of your work. -
2:29 - 2:31- To suspect that every night.
-
2:31 - 2:33You're undoubtedly cut out
for your next phase in life. -
2:33 - 2:36- I watched over him while he slept.
-
2:43 - 2:44[Ominous music]
-
2:52 - 2:56- Never before the eighth night
had I felt the extent of my own powers -- -
2:56 - 2:58of my sagacity.
-
2:58 - 2:59[Chuckles]
-
2:59 - 3:00[Malign laugh]
-
3:02 - 3:03Who’s there?
-
3:03 - 3:07- Death had him stalked
with his black shadow before him. -
3:10 - 3:11Ship. Åpne vinduet.
-
3:16 - 3:19- His room still black
as pitch with the thick darkness. -
3:22 - 3:26It is nothing but creaks
in the old floor panels. -
3:27 - 3:31- That dull blue vulture's eye,
with a hideous veil over it -
3:31 - 3:33that chills the very marrow of my bones.
-
3:34 - 3:36His fear grows louder and louder.
-
3:36 - 3:38It increases my fury,
-
3:38 - 3:41as the beating of a drum
stimulates the soldier into courage. -
3:41 - 3:45[Raising voice] So strange a noise as
this excited me to uncontrollable terror. -
3:45 - 3:47And anxiety seized me!
-
3:47 - 3:49[Squalling]
[Noise of struggle] -
3:54 - 3:55[Squalling]
[Noise of struggle] -
3:56 - 3:58[Squashing noise]
-
4:00 - 4:01[Squalling]
-
4:04 - 4:05[Distraught laugh]
-
4:09 - 4:11♪[Richard Wagner -
Siegfried's Funeral March]♪ -
4:25 - 4:26Yes, --
-
4:30 - 4:32he was stone dead.
-
4:35 - 4:37And I am singularly at ease.
-
4:44 - 4:47As the craft will be discovered
soon without a corpse, -- -
4:47 - 4:49I worked hastily, --
-
4:49 - 4:50but in silence.
-
4:51 - 4:53[Telecom device rings]
[Cutting noise] -
4:54 - 4:56- [Deputy Chief] wasn't
scheduled to vacate your ship -
4:56 - 4:58prior to the program completion.
-
4:58 - 5:00What is going on down there?
-
5:00 - 5:03I awoke from the sound of his pod
as it expelled from our vessel. -
5:05 - 5:07I worry of his sudden flee.
-
5:07 - 5:09Space is always as dark as midnight.
-
5:09 - 5:11Has there been a terrible accident?
-
5:11 - 5:13We'll rendezvous with this pod soon.
-
5:13 - 5:15An investigation unit will
dock with you shortly. -
5:17 - 5:18[Metal panel sound]
-
5:20 - 5:22[creaking plastic]
-
5:31 - 5:33No human eye, not even his, --
-
5:33 - 5:35could detect anything wrong.
-
5:35 - 5:38There was nothing more to wash out.
-
5:38 - 5:41No stain of any kind,
no blood spot whatsoever. -
5:41 - 5:42[Dark ambient sound]
-
5:43 - 5:45I opened the airlock with a light heart.
-
5:46 - 5:47[Alarm sound]
-
5:47 - 5:48What have I now to fear?
-
5:49 - 5:50[Airlock doors opening]
-
5:53 - 5:54Welcome.
-
5:55 - 5:57Good evening trainee. Let’s get to it.
-
5:57 - 5:59A screech was audible prior
to the unscheduled departure. -
5:59 - 6:02Likely the clunky air release
as he entered the pod. -
6:02 - 6:04This vessel is beginning to age severely.
-
6:04 - 6:06We'd like to take a look
around his quarters. -
6:07 - 6:10We hope to discover clues
for the reason of his departure. -
6:10 - 6:11Certainly.
-
6:11 - 6:12Right this way.
-
6:14 - 6:15I showed them his quarters, --
-
6:16 - 6:18secure, undisturbed.
-
6:19 - 6:21♪[Maurice Ravel -
Oiseaux Triste]♪ -
6:21 - 6:24The investigators were satisfied
as my manner convinced them. -
6:24 - 6:27- [Lieutenant] I barely knew him,
but he trained a few of my friends. -
6:28 - 6:30How long were you stationed here together?
-
6:30 - 6:31- [Narrator] 400 revs.
-
6:32 - 6:35He will be absorbed into
that ghastly atmosphere in due time. -
6:37 - 6:38This is disappointing.
-
6:39 - 6:40We cannot properly bury him.
-
6:40 - 6:43We'll surely find his body
before he reaches the atmosphere. -
6:43 - 6:44I wished them gone.
-
6:44 - 6:47-[Lieutenant] Perhaps
his brilliance led to -- -
6:47 - 6:48eccentricities.
-
6:48 - 6:50-[Officer] Undetected after all this time?
-
6:51 - 6:51Impossible.
-
6:52 - 6:53My head ached.
-
6:53 - 6:58Or maybe, apprehension over his impending
promotion pushed him over the edge. -
6:58 - 7:00[Sudden strident sound]
-
7:00 - 7:01All those years on this systems --
-
7:01 - 7:03Why would they not be gone?
-
7:05 - 7:07-- I can’t understand how you guys do it.
-
7:07 - 7:08With the knowledge --
-
7:09 - 7:10pushes humanity forward.
-
7:11 - 7:13And, the beauty is undeniable.
-
7:14 - 7:16It’s great until you’re driven
insane from it. -
7:16 - 7:17Oh God!
-
7:18 - 7:20What can I do?
It's possible they cannot hear? -
7:20 - 7:23Perhaps its time to return
and deliver our report. -
7:23 - 7:25- No! No! They heard!
-[Lieutenant] Yes. -
7:25 - 7:28They are making a mockery of this horror!
-
7:28 - 7:29[Heart beats]
-
7:31 - 7:33Anything is better than this agony!
-
7:33 - 7:35It is peaceful out here, though.
-
7:35 - 7:37Anything is more tolerable
than this derision! -
7:37 - 7:40I sometimes wish for
an extended investigation -- -
7:41 - 7:43so close to these massive bodies.
-
7:43 - 7:46I could bear those
hypocritical smiles no longer! -
7:46 - 7:48I want to scream or die!
-
7:48 - 7:49[Dark ambient sound]
-
7:49 - 7:50[Thumping sound]
-
7:52 - 7:53[Screeching]
[Thumping sound] -
7:54 - 7:55[Pastoral choir]
-
7:56 - 7:58[Squalling]
[Squashing sound] -
8:00 - 8:01And now, again!
-
8:02 - 8:02Hark!
-
8:03 - 8:03Louder!
-
8:03 - 8:04[Screeching]
-
8:04 - 8:05Louder!
-
8:06 - 8:07Louder!
-
8:07 - 8:08[Screaming]
Louder! -
8:08 - 8:09Louder!
-
8:09 - 8:10Villains!
-
8:10 - 8:13Dissemble no more!
I admit the deed! -
8:13 - 8:14Here, here!
-
8:14 - 8:18It is the beating of his hideous heart!
-
8:18 - 8:20[Sinister brass sound]
[Beating heart] -
8:27 - 8:28Now, --
-
8:29 - 8:30at the dead hour of the night, --
-
8:30 - 8:31[Locking sound]
-
8:31 - 8:34amid the dreadful silence of space, --
-
8:35 - 8:39I’m satisfied in the wild
audacity of my triumph. -
8:44 - 8:47The eye would trouble me nevermore.

"Orbit" by Nicholas Camp and Don Thiel III
Story based on "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan PoeIn this sci-fi retelling of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart," a pair of astronauts work on a small space station orbiting a distant planet. As the mysterious narrator attempts to convince himself of his sanity while describing his brutal act of murder, he becomes haunted by a thunderous heartbeat that could only come from the far reaches of space.
An old astronaut and his young trainee are studying a mysterious planet in deep space. The trainee is distressed over the old man’s deformed eye, and it turns into a deadly obsession. The trainee murders the old man, and believes he is free of the eye’s ghastly power.
While presenting a spotless crime scene to the investigators, the trainee descends to an abyss of fear and paranoia. He hears the sound of a heartbeat coming from beneath the floor, and it begins to grow louder...

http://www.NicholasCamp.com/Filmmaker's Statement:
Nicholas had always wanted to make a movie taking place on a space station orbiting a mysterious planet, and Don wanted to follow up his award-winning short, “The Raven,” with another Edgar Allan Poe story. As they discussed their next projects, it did not take long to realize that setting “The Tell-Tale Heart” on a small space station could add to the isolated, eerie tone of the story, and help motivate the lead character’s descent into madness.Narrative "Making Of":
We were determined to create a tangible, realistic feel that is inspired by the movies we watched growing up. All of the interior and exterior sets are real, hand-crafted models, and the planet and space elements were made with mixtures of thick, colorful liquids.Tragically, this is the final project released featuring actor Jacob Witkin as he passed away shortly after production wrapped. Jacob had an incredible presence on set, and people from our cast and crew often pulled us aside to mention how enjoyable it was to work with him. Jacob had a great sense of humor, and he was an incredible actor. His scope of work illustrates his interest in all kinds of stories and characters, and we are so lucky to have him in “Orbit.”
