Ladies first. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Congressman Debbie Wasserman Schultz,[br]who was a fighter and a champion 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for the people.[br]Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who is always advocating for the issues[br]that impact our community. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Congressman Carlos Curbelo, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who is new to the Congress but[br]is blazing his own great trail. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And they all helped move this bill.[br]I always want to take a moment again[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to recognize the family of[br]Special Agent Grogan who are here with us, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the family of Special Agent Dove,[br]wherever they might be. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We have the honor of having FBI Director[br]James Comey with us. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 He has the enormous task of[br]keeping all Americans safe. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I'd seen him so many times,[br]but he looks taller today. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We're also happy to have GSA Administrator[br]Denise Roth here today. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We're fortunate to have a great [br]local leader as the head of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the Miami field office,[br]Special Agent-in-Charge George Piro. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And I also want to acknowledge our mayor. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Consider this scenario: 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The brand new federal building[br]housing the FBI has been built. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And the FBI approaches my office. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Congresswoman Wilson: 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The ribbon cutting has been scheduled[br]in four short weeks. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The dedication is[br]on the government's calendar, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and cannot be changed. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 One problem. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The FBI wants to name[br]this gorgeous edifice 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 at the same time it opened. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Everyone said: “That's impossible. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It takes at least eight months to a year[br]to complete the process, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [through] the House, the Senate[br]and to the president's office.” 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I said: ‘I'm a school principal. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And I said’ — excuse my French — 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 ‘Oh, hell no.[br]We're going to get this done.’ 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Immediately, I went into attack mode. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I went to the speaker, Speaker Boehner. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I said, ‘Mr. Speaker, I need your help, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the FBI needs your help. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And your country needs your help. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And we have no time to waste.’ 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 He went into attack mode, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and in two days pulled it out[br]of committee. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Brought it to the floor for a vote. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Rep. Curbelo and I presented it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We all voted for it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And I dashed it over to the Senate. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And put our senators on notice:[br]Put it on your radar. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Senator Nelson and Senator Rubio, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who I believe have representatives[br]here today, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they hotlined it to the Senate floor[br]in just two days. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And guess what? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The president signed the bill into law[br]this past Tuesday, April 7, 2015. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 With a bang, bang, bang! 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You know what? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I will be presenting the bill, a copy of the bill,[br]that was signed into the law, to the FBI 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and also the pen the president used[br]to sign that document. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It is a miracle, to say the least. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But it speaks to the respect our Congress has[br]for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The men and women who put their lives[br]on the line every single day. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And today we're providing a boost to our nation 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 by naming this fantastic building in honor of[br]Special Agent Benajmin Grogan and Jerry Dove, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who died valiantly on Friday, April 11, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in what is still considered the bloodiest gun battle[br]in the storied history of the FBI. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Most men and women in law enforcement[br]leave their homes for work 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 knowing that there is a possibility[br]that they may not return. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I may [inaudible] for all men and women[br]and first responders to stand up. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Stand up now, so that we can[br]applaud you and what you do. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Stand up! We are proud of you. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We are proud of your courage. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Thank you. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I don't know if that was on the minds[br]of agents Grogan and Dove 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 as they left their homes on April 11, 1986. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But I do know it was an unusually breezy[br]spring morning in South Florida. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So eerily similar today,[br]and the actual anniversary is tomorrow. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I do [know] that Miami in the 1980s was plagued[br]by crime and graphic violence. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We all know that. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This period has been chronicled[br]in media reports, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and portrayed on TV shows like Miami Vice[br]and movies like Scarface. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I know that Agent Grogan was a company man,[br]and one year from retirement. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 His wife also was an employee of the FBI. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I know that Agent Dove joined the bureau[br]after completing law school, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and was living his boyhood dream,[br]according to his family. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I know their bravery was the motivation[br]for joining a team on that morning. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 A team that was tailing a vehicle[br]with two suspects 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who were connected to a string of murders[br]and violence and bank robberies. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The agents attempted to get[br]the drivers to pull over. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They were cornered. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 A gun battle immediately ensued. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There was a barrage of bullets. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I can only imagine the frustration[br]of those agents. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Yet they battled on. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In a desperate attempt to flee, the suspects[br]tried to commandeer Grogan and Dove’s vehicle. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It is reported the suspects shot both agents[br]with a high-powered rifle at close range. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Shortly after, the suspects were themselves[br]fatally shot by Agent Morales. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Agent Morales made a memorable statement[br]about his role in that historic event. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 He said, 'I just knew I was going to die. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But I was going to do my very best to make sure[br]that those suspects did not get away." 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When the smoke cleared, two agents lay dead. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And five were seriously injured. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So today it is our patriotic duty to lift up 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Special Agent Benjamin Grogan[br]and Special Agent Jerry Dove 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 from the streets of South Florida,[br]and place their names and pictures high. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Where the world will know that[br]we are proud of their sacrifice. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Sacrifice for our nation. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It is only fitting that their names should be placed[br]on the same mantle with the letters FBI. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Because Special Agent Grogan and Dove embody 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the sacred motto for which[br]the agency has become known. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 - Please repeat it after me, fidelity.[br]- Fidelity. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 - Bravery. [br]- Bravery. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 - And integrity.[br]- And integrity. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 God bless you, God bless the FBI,[br]and God bless America.
