Coding Makerspace with A-Frame
-
0:03 - 0:06Today we're at
the George Washington Carver museum, -
0:06 - 0:08which is a historic site in Austin,
-
0:08 - 0:11it actually represents the life and work
-
0:11 - 0:13of Dr. Carver in science
-
0:13 - 0:15and we're actually making sure
-
0:15 - 0:16that his legacy continues
-
0:16 - 0:19by teaching kids science
through computer science. -
0:19 - 0:21I think WebVR and tech
-
0:21 - 0:24and many things that are going on
in the tech space now -
0:24 - 0:25is about accessibility.
-
0:25 - 0:27The great thing about WebVR
-
0:27 - 0:29is it's based entirely in the browser
-
0:29 - 0:31so it's open software
that everyone can access -
0:31 - 0:33on practically any device.
-
0:33 - 0:37So A-Frame is a means for us
to get better in WebVR. -
0:37 - 0:39We already knew hoe to code.
-
0:39 - 0:41I feel like if you didn't know
how to code at all, -
0:41 - 0:43and you saw A-Frame,
-
0:43 - 0:46the fact that you make changes
that reflect immediately, -
0:46 - 0:47would keep you going.
-
0:47 - 0:49I can pick this up to, looking at it,
-
0:49 - 0:51okay, HTML, that's familiar.
-
0:51 - 0:53Now, let's add something else onto it
-
0:53 - 0:56and have that 3D space that VR creates.
-
0:56 - 0:58At the right side of the screen,
wherever it is... -
0:58 - 1:00So, it's like you are making changes
-
1:00 - 1:02and you see the effects immediately,
-
1:02 - 1:05instead of other languages
where you have to write it all -
1:05 - 1:07and try running it to check.
-
1:07 - 1:10Giving them this opportunity
to learn A-Frame -
1:10 - 1:12allows them to really begin
-
1:12 - 1:14to see themselves as somebody
-
1:14 - 1:16who can converse with all these people
-
1:16 - 1:18in these great and wonderful
and interesting jobs. -
1:18 - 1:20That then opens up that world to them.
-
1:21 - 1:23A-Frame was very helpful
-
1:23 - 1:26because a lot of us haven't worked
on WebVR before, -
1:26 - 1:29including the professionals
who are working with us. -
1:29 - 1:31With A-Frame they just reference it,
-
1:31 - 1:33check out how it's written,
-
1:33 - 1:36they assist us in the working.
-
1:37 - 1:39To expand my knowledge,
-
1:39 - 1:41so I can make my own games
-
1:41 - 1:42or even create my own langauge.
-
1:42 - 1:45The great thing about
getting students excited -
1:45 - 1:46about making software
in the browser, -
1:46 - 1:48is that they can take this anywhere.
-
1:48 - 1:49They can use it to make VR,
-
1:49 - 1:51they can use it in A-Frame.
-
1:51 - 1:53They can also use it
for normal web software, -
1:53 - 1:55whether that's e-commerce
or social media, -
1:55 - 1:58the things their lives
are centred around these days.
