Coding Makerspace with A-Frame

  • 0:03 - 0:06
    Today we're at
    the George Washington Carver museum,
  • 0:06 - 0:08
which is a historic site in Austin,
  • 0:08 - 0:11
it actually represents the life and work
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    of Dr. Carver in science
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    and we're actually making sure
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    that his legacy continues
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    by teaching kids science
    through computer science.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    I think WebVR and tech
  • 0:21 - 0:24
and many things that are going on
    in the tech space now
  • 0:24 - 0:25
    is about accessibility.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    The great thing about WebVR
  • 0:27 - 0:29
is it's based entirely in the browser
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    so it's open software
    that everyone can access
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    on practically any device.
  • 0:33 - 0:37
So A-Frame is a means for us
    to get better in WebVR.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
We already knew hoe to code.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
I feel like if you didn't know
    how to code at all,
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    and you saw A-Frame,
  • 0:43 - 0:46
the fact that you make changes
    that reflect immediately,
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    would keep you going.
  • 0:47 - 0:49
I can pick this up to, looking at it,
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    okay, HTML, that's familiar.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
Now, let's add something else onto it
  • 0:53 - 0:56
and have that 3D space that VR creates.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
At the right side of the screen,
    wherever it is...
  • 0:58 - 1:00
So, it's like you are making changes
  • 1:00 - 1:02
and you see the effects immediately,
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    instead of other languages
where you have to write it all
  • 1:05 - 1:07
and try running it to check.
  • 1:07 - 1:10
    Giving them this opportunity
    to learn A-Frame
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    allows them to really begin
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    to see themselves as somebody
  • 1:14 - 1:16
who can converse with all these people
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    in these great and wonderful
    and interesting jobs.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
That then opens up that world to them.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    A-Frame was very helpful
  • 1:23 - 1:26
because a lot of us haven't worked
    on WebVR before,
  • 1:26 - 1:29
    including the professionals
    who are working with us.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
With A-Frame they just reference it,
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    check out how it's written,
  • 1:33 - 1:36
they assist us in the working.
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    To expand my knowledge,
  • 1:39 - 1:41
so I can make my own games
  • 1:41 - 1:42
or even create my own langauge.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    The great thing about
    getting students excited
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    about making software
    in the browser,
  • 1:46 - 1:48
is that they can take this anywhere.
  • 1:48 - 1:49
They can use it to make VR,
  • 1:49 - 1:51
they can use it in A-Frame.
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    They can also use it
    for normal web software,
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    whether that's e-commerce
    or social media,
  • 1:55 - 1:58
    the things their lives
    are centred around these days.
