French forces gathered at the gates of St George fort of Madras (modern-day Chennai). The native king’s son, Mafuz Khan, charged with his 10000 horsemen. French cannon thundered in the direction of the incoming cavalry. The horsemen who charged knew the effects of a cannon on cavalry and thought to take on the battery when the cannons are stuck in reloading. The first shot came out the artillery, and a dozen men fell to the ground. The horsemen pushed towards the cannons; the second shot came in just 6 seconds. The entire native cavalry was surprised and thought the French had more cannons than they thought and took a retreat, the first retreat in India by native ruler against a European colonial power. The improved French cannons were able to fire quickly and changed the history of India forever.
