Monmouthpedia, a Wikipedia project!
-
0:15 - 0:17I started MonmouthpediA because I think
-
0:17 - 0:19that knowledge can give us context and
-
0:19 - 0:21allow us to appreciate the things around us more.
-
0:22 - 0:25The project is a collaboration between Wikimedia UK,
-
0:25 - 0:27Monmouthshire County Council, the museums,
-
0:27 - 0:29the library, University of Wales, Cardiff Met,
-
0:29 - 0:32but most importantly individual contributors,
-
0:32 - 0:35local community groups and people
-
0:35 - 0:36not just from Monmouth but people all over
-
0:36 - 0:39the world that are creating the content and
-
0:39 - 0:40making this happen.
-
0:40 - 0:42A QR code is a kind of bar code
-
0:42 - 0:43that you can read through your phone or
-
0:43 - 0:46tablet computer and it can take you to a web page.
-
0:46 - 0:48The great thing about QRpedia is that
-
0:48 - 0:49whatever language your phone is in
-
0:49 - 0:51it will take you through to that language page
-
0:51 - 0:52on Wikipedia.
-
0:52 - 0:54If you have a Spanish phone
-
0:54 - 0:55it will take you though to the spanish article,
-
0:55 - 0:57German, German article.
-
0:57 - 0:59I think the real attraction of QR codes for us
-
0:59 - 1:04is it gives us the chance to let people see our
-
1:04 - 1:06information in their own language which
-
1:06 - 1:08is a great boon, especially in Monmouth.
-
1:08 - 1:11The Welsh language is a possibility
-
1:11 - 1:13but also all the other world languages.
-
1:13 - 1:17The other big advantage from a curatorial
-
1:17 - 1:19point of view is that we love to give people
-
1:19 - 1:22information until the "cows come home"
-
1:22 - 1:24and we can't do that in our ordinary labels
-
1:24 - 1:26because there's not enough space.
-
1:27 - 1:30What we have here is a Grade 1 star listed building
-
1:30 - 1:34with great stories to tell, lots of events and activities
-
1:34 - 1:37which have taken place in the building,
-
1:37 - 1:40and yet we got a very very small collection.
-
1:40 - 1:43So using the QRpedia codes, it gives people access
-
1:43 - 1:46to a wide range of information about the stories,
-
1:46 - 1:49as well as the artifacts.
-
1:50 - 1:53As a history student it's nice to pick and choose
-
1:53 - 1:57which information I can see and not having to be
-
1:57 - 2:00bombarded with information, which can be quite
-
2:00 - 2:04intimidating sometimes when you go into a museums.
-
2:04 - 2:07It's fantastic that Monmouth is one of the first town
-
2:07 - 2:11to offer the QR codes, and that is gonna become
-
2:11 - 2:14internationally renowned for the Wikipedia project
-
2:14 - 2:17is going on here. I think it's going to introduce
-
2:17 - 2:20a lot of people around the world to our
-
2:20 - 2:22quite fascinating history.
-
2:22 - 2:25The author William Gibson once famously said:
-
2:25 - 2:28"The future is already here, it's just unevenly distributed".
-
2:28 - 2:31With Monmouth embrassing QRpedia as technology
-
2:31 - 2:35and becoming a WiFi town, we now have a real
-
2:35 - 2:38practical example of the way in which we can have
-
2:38 - 2:40communities coming together both locally
-
2:40 - 2:44and globally, to share and create a new
-
2:44 - 2:46sense of place in Monmouth and enable
-
2:46 - 2:48new visitor experiences for the town.
