Dee Dee Blanchard, mother of Gypsy Rose, was the focus of The Act on Hulu and Mommy Dearest, Mommy Dead on HBO. Dee Dee Blanchard was accused of abusing her daughter Gypsy Rose because of Factitious Disorder by Proxy (which used to be called Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy).
Now Factitious Disorder can be something we impose on ourselves as well as something we impose on someone else. The only difference is that one is called Factitious Disorder and the other is called Factitious Disorder by proxy. Basic Factitious disorder is diagnosed when someone falsifies physical or psychological signs or symptoms, or even causing injury or disease associated with the falsification. Meaning that someone will fake they are sick and even harm themselves to create the same symptoms and fool a doctor or other provider. They must also present themselves as ill, impaired, or injured. This behavior must still happen even when there aren’t any outside rewards. And finally this must not be happening because of a different mental illness like delusional disorder or any other psychotic disorder. The criteria is the same for Factitious Disorder by Proxy, except that the person who has this disorder is pretending someone in their life is ill. So in the “by proxy” diagnosis the perpetrator (not the victim) receives the diagnosis of Factitious Disorder by Proxy.
