The walk from "no" to "yes"

    Well, the subject of difficult negotiation

    reminds me of one of my favorite stories
    from the Middle East,

    of a man who left
    to his three sons, 17 camels.
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    To the first son, he left half the camels;
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    to the second son,
    he left a third of the camels;
  • 0:15 - 0:18
    and to the youngest son,
    he left a ninth of the camels.
  • 0:18 - 0:22
    The three sons got into a negotiation --
    17 doesn't divide by two.
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    It doesn't divide by three.
  • 0:24 - 0:25
    It doesn't divide by nine.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    Brotherly tempers started to get strained.
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    Finally, in desperation,
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    they went and they consulted
    a wise old woman.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
    The wise old woman thought
    about their problem for a long time,
  • 0:35 - 0:39
    and finally she came back and said,
    "Well, I don't know if I can help you,
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    but at least, if you want,
    you can have my camel."
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    So then, they had 18 camels.
  • 0:43 - 0:46
    The first son took his half --
    half of 18 is nine.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    The second son took his third --
    a third of 18 is six.
  • 0:48 - 0:52
    The youngest son took his ninth --
    a ninth of 18 is two.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    You get 17.
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    They had one camel left over.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    They gave it back to the wise old woman.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    (Laughter)

    Now, if you think
    about that story for a moment,
  • 1:02 - 1:06
    I think it resembles a lot
    of the difficult negotiations
  • 1:06 - 1:07
    we get involved in.
  • 1:07 - 1:10
    They start off like 17 camels,
    no way to resolve it.
  • 1:10 - 1:11
    Somehow, what we need to do
  • 1:11 - 1:15
    is step back from those situations,
    like that wise old woman,
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    look at the situation through fresh eyes
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    and come up with an 18th camel.
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    Finding that 18th camel
    in the world's conflicts
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    has been my life passion.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
    I basically see humanity
    a bit like those three brothers.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    We're all one family.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    We know that scientifically,
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    thanks to the communications revolution,
  • 1:34 - 1:38
    all the tribes on the planet --
    all 15,000 tribes --
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    are in touch with each other.
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    And it's a big family reunion.
  • 1:43 - 1:44
    And yet, like many family reunions,
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    it's not all peace and light.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    There's a lot of conflict,
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    and the question is:
    How do we deal with our differences?
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    How do we deal with
    our deepest differences,
  • 1:54 - 1:57
    given the human propensity for conflict
  • 1:57 - 2:01
    and the human genius at devising
    weapons of enormous destruction?
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    That's the question.
  • 2:03 - 2:08
    As I've spent the last better part
    of three decades, almost four,
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    traveling the world,
  • 2:10 - 2:13
    trying to work, getting
    involved in conflicts
  • 2:13 - 2:17
    ranging from Yugoslavia to the Middle East
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    to Chechnya to Venezuela --
  • 2:19 - 2:22
    some of the most difficult conflicts
    on the face of the planet --
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    I've been asking myself that question.
  • 2:24 - 2:27
    And I think I've found, in some ways,
    what is the secret to peace.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    It's actually surprisingly simple.
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    It's not easy, but it's simple.
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    It's not even new.
  • 2:34 - 2:38
    It may be one of our most
    ancient human heritages.
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    The secret to peace is us.
  • 2:41 - 2:46
    It's us who act as a surrounding
    community around any conflict,
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    who can play a constructive role.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
    Let me give you just a story, an example.
  • 2:52 - 2:53
    About 20 years ago,
  • 2:53 - 2:56
    I was in South Africa,
    working with the parties in that conflict,
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    and I had an extra month,
  • 2:58 - 3:02
    so I spent some time living
    with several groups of San Bushmen.
  • 3:02 - 3:06
    I was curious about them, about the way
    in which they resolve conflict.
  • 3:06 - 3:10
    Because, after all, within living memory,
    they were hunters and gatherers,
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    living pretty much
    like our ancestors lived
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    for maybe 99 percent of the human story.
  • 3:15 - 3:19
    And all the men have these poison arrows
    that they use for hunting --
  • 3:19 - 3:20
    absolutely fatal.
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    So how do they deal
    with their differences?
  • 3:22 - 3:27
    Well, what I learned is, whenever
    tempers rise in those communities,
  • 3:27 - 3:31
    someone goes and hides
    the poison arrows out in the bush,
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    and then everyone sits around
    in a circle like this,
  • 3:34 - 3:37
    and they sit and they talk and they talk.
  • 3:37 - 3:40
    It may take two days,
    three days, four days,
  • 3:40 - 3:43
    but they don't rest
    until they find a resolution
  • 3:43 - 3:45
    or better yet -- a reconciliation.
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    And if tempers are still too high,
  • 3:47 - 3:50
    then they send someone
    off to visit some relatives,
  • 3:50 - 3:51
    as a cooling-off period.
  • 3:51 - 3:54
    Well, that system is, I think,
    probably the system
  • 3:54 - 3:56
    that kept us alive to this point,
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    given our human tendencies.
  • 3:59 - 4:02
    That system, I call "the third side."
  • 4:02 - 4:05
    Because if you think about it,
    normally when we think of conflict,
  • 4:05 - 4:06
    when we describe it,
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    there's always two sides --
  • 4:08 - 4:10
    it's Arabs versus Israelis,
    labor versus management,
  • 4:11 - 4:14
    husband versus wife,
    Republicans versus Democrats.
  • 4:14 - 4:15
    But what we don't often see
  • 4:15 - 4:18
    is that there's always a third side,
  • 4:18 - 4:22
    and the third side of the conflict is us,
    it's the surrounding community,
  • 4:22 - 4:23
    it's the friends, the allies,
  • 4:23 - 4:25
    the family members, the neighbors.
  • 4:25 - 4:28
    And we can play
    an incredibly constructive role.
  • 4:28 - 4:33
    Perhaps the most fundamental way
    in which the third side can help
  • 4:33 - 4:36
    is to remind the parties
    of what's really at stake.
  • 4:36 - 4:39
    For the sake of the kids,
    for the sake of the family,
  • 4:39 - 4:42
    for the sake of the community,
    for the sake of the future,
  • 4:42 - 4:44
    let's stop fighting for a moment
    and start talking.
  • 4:45 - 4:46
    Because, the thing is,
  • 4:46 - 4:48
    when we're involved in conflict,
  • 4:48 - 4:50
    it's very easy to lose perspective.
  • 4:50 - 4:53
    It's very easy to react.
  • 4:53 - 4:55
    Human beings -- we're reaction machines.
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    And as the saying goes,
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    when angry, you will make the best speech
  • 4:59 - 5:01
    you will ever regret.
  • 5:01 - 5:03
    (Laughter)
  • 5:03 - 5:06
    And so the third side reminds us of that.
  • 5:06 - 5:08
    The third side helps us go to the balcony,
  • 5:08 - 5:10
    which is a metaphor
    for a place of perspective,
  • 5:10 - 5:13
    where we can keep our eyes on the prize.
  • 5:13 - 5:16
    Let me tell you a little story
    from my own negotiating experience.
  • 5:16 - 5:21
    Some years ago, I was involved
    as a facilitator in some very tough talks
  • 5:22 - 5:25
    between the leaders of Russia
    and the leaders of Chechnya.
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    There was a war going on, as you know.
  • 5:28 - 5:31
    And we met in the Hague,
    in the Peace Palace,
  • 5:31 - 5:36
    in the same room where the Yugoslav
    war-crimes tribunal was taking place.
  • 5:36 - 5:39
    And the talks got off
    to a rather rocky start
  • 5:39 - 5:42
    when the vice president of Chechnya
    began by pointing at the Russians
  • 5:42 - 5:45
    and said, "You should stay
    right here in your seats,
  • 5:45 - 5:48
    because you're going
    to be on trial for war crimes."
  • 5:48 - 5:50
    And then he turned to me and said,
  • 5:50 - 5:51
    "You're an American.
  • 5:51 - 5:54
    Look at what you Americans
    are doing in Puerto Rico."
  • 5:54 - 5:58
    And my mind started racing, "Puerto Rico?
    What do I know about Puerto Rico?"
  • 5:58 - 5:59
    I started reacting.
  • 5:59 - 6:00
    (Laughter)
  • 6:00 - 6:03
    But then, I tried to remember
    to go to the balcony.
  • 6:03 - 6:04
    And then when he paused
  • 6:04 - 6:06
    and everyone looked at me for a response,
  • 6:06 - 6:10
    from a balcony perspective,
    I was able to thank him for his remarks
  • 6:10 - 6:12
    and say, "I appreciate
    your criticism of my country
  • 6:12 - 6:15
    and I take it as a sign
    that we're among friends
  • 6:15 - 6:17
    and can speak candidly to one another."
  • 6:17 - 6:18
    (Laughter)
  • 6:18 - 6:21
    "And what we're here to do is not
    to talk about Puerto Rico or the past.
  • 6:21 - 6:23
    We're here to see
    if we can figure out a way
  • 6:23 - 6:26
    to stop the suffering
    and the bloodshed in Chechnya."
  • 6:27 - 6:29
    The conversation got back on track.
  • 6:29 - 6:31
    That's the role of the third side,
  • 6:31 - 6:33
    to help the parties go to the balcony.
  • 6:34 - 6:36
    Now let me take you, for a moment,
  • 6:36 - 6:39
    to what's widely regarded as the world's
    most difficult conflict,
  • 6:39 - 6:42
    or the most impossible conflict,
    the Middle East.
  • 6:42 - 6:45
    Question is: where's the third side there?
  • 6:45 - 6:47
    How could we possibly go to the balcony?
  • 6:48 - 6:51
    Now, I don't pretend to have an answer
    to the Middle East conflict,
  • 6:52 - 6:55
    but I think I've got a first step --
    literally, a first step --
  • 6:55 - 6:58
    something that any one of us
    could do as third-siders.
  • 6:59 - 7:01
    Let me just ask you one question first.
  • 7:01 - 7:05
    How many of you in the last years
  • 7:05 - 7:08
    have ever found yourself
    worrying about the Middle East
  • 7:08 - 7:10
    and wondering what anyone could do?
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    Just out of curiosity, how many of you?
  • 7:12 - 7:14
    OK, so the great majority of us.
  • 7:15 - 7:16
    And here, it's so far away.
  • 7:16 - 7:19
    Why do we pay so much attention
    to this conflict?
  • 7:19 - 7:21
    Is it the number of deaths?
  • 7:21 - 7:24
    There are a hundred times more people
    who die in a conflict in Africa
  • 7:24 - 7:26
    than in the Middle East.
  • 7:26 - 7:28
    No, it's because of the story,
  • 7:28 - 7:31
    because we feel personally
    involved in that story.
  • 7:31 - 7:35
    Whether we're Christians, Muslims or Jews,
    religious or non-religious,
  • 7:35 - 7:37
    we feel we have a personal stake in it.
  • 7:37 - 7:38
    Stories matter;
  • 7:38 - 7:40
    as an anthropologist, I know that.
  • 7:40 - 7:44
    Stories are what we use
    to transmit knowledge.
  • 7:44 - 7:45
    They give meaning to our lives.
  • 7:45 - 7:48
    That's what we tell here
    at TED, we tell stories.
  • 7:48 - 7:49
    Stories are the key.
  • 7:49 - 7:52
    And so my question is --
  • 7:52 - 7:57
    yes, let's try and resolve the politics
    there in the Middle East,
  • 7:57 - 7:59
    but let's also take a look at the story.
  • 7:59 - 8:02
    Let's try to get at the root
    of what it's all about.
  • 8:02 - 8:04
    Let's see if we can apply
    the third side to it.
  • 8:04 - 8:07
    What would that mean?
    What is the story there?
  • 8:07 - 8:11
    Now, as anthropologists, we know
    that every culture has an origin story.
  • 8:11 - 8:14
    What's the origin story
    of the Middle East?
  • 8:14 - 8:15
    In a phrase, it's:
  • 8:15 - 8:17
    Four thousand years ago,
  • 8:17 - 8:21
    a man and his family walked
    across the Middle East,
  • 8:21 - 8:23
    and the world has never
    been the same since.
  • 8:24 - 8:26
    That man, of course, was Abraham.
  • 8:27 - 8:31
    And what he stood for was unity,
    the unity of the family;
  • 8:31 - 8:33
    he's the father of us all.
  • 8:33 - 8:36
    But it's not just what he stood for,
    it's what his message was.
  • 8:36 - 8:38
    His basic message was unity too,
  • 8:38 - 8:41
    the interconnectedness of it all,
    the unity of it all.
  • 8:41 - 8:45
    And his basic value was respect,
  • 8:45 - 8:46
    was kindness toward strangers.
  • 8:46 - 8:49
    That's what he's known for,
    his hospitality.
  • 8:50 - 8:52
    So in that sense,
  • 8:52 - 8:56
    he's the symbolic third side
    of the Middle East.
  • 8:56 - 9:00
    He's the one who reminds us
    that we're all part of a greater whole.
  • 9:00 - 9:04
    Now, think about that for a moment.
  • 9:04 - 9:07
    Today, we face the scourge of terrorism.
  • 9:07 - 9:09
    What is terrorism?
  • 9:09 - 9:12
    Terrorism is basically
    taking an innocent stranger
  • 9:12 - 9:17
    and treating them as an enemy
    whom you kill in order to create fear.
  • 9:18 - 9:19
    What's the opposite of terrorism?
  • 9:20 - 9:22
    It's taking an innocent stranger
  • 9:22 - 9:26
    and treating them as a friend
    whom you welcome into your home,
  • 9:26 - 9:29
    in order to sow and create understanding
  • 9:29 - 9:31
    or respect, or love.
  • 9:32 - 9:36
    So what if, then, you took
    the story of Abraham,
  • 9:36 - 9:38
    which is a third-side story,
  • 9:38 - 9:40
    what if that could be --
  • 9:40 - 9:43
    because Abraham stands for hospitality --
  • 9:43 - 9:47
    what if that could be
    an antidote to terrorism?
  • 9:47 - 9:50
    What if that could be a vaccine
    against religious intolerance?
  • 9:50 - 9:53
    How would you bring that story to life?
  • 9:53 - 9:56
    Now, it's not enough just to tell a story.
  • 9:56 - 9:59
    That's powerful, but people need
    to experience the story.
  • 9:59 - 10:01
    They need to be able to live the story.
  • 10:01 - 10:02
    How would you do that?
  • 10:02 - 10:05
    And that was my thinking
    of how would you do that.
  • 10:05 - 10:07
    And that's what comes
    to the first step here.
  • 10:07 - 10:10
    Because the simple way to do that is:
  • 10:10 - 10:12
    you go for a walk.
  • 10:12 - 10:15
    You go for a walk
    in the footsteps of Abraham.
  • 10:15 - 10:18
    You retrace the footsteps of Abraham.
  • 10:18 - 10:21
    Because walking has a real power.
  • 10:21 - 10:24
    You know, as an anthropologist,
    walking is what made us human.
  • 10:24 - 10:29
    It's funny -- when you walk,
    you walk side-by-side,
  • 10:29 - 10:31
    in the same common direction.
  • 10:31 - 10:33
    Now if I were to come to you face-to-face
  • 10:33 - 10:36
    and come this close to you,
  • 10:36 - 10:39
    you would feel threatened.
  • 10:40 - 10:42
    But if I walk shoulder-to-shoulder,
  • 10:42 - 10:44
    even touching shoulders,
  • 10:44 - 10:45
    it's no problem.
  • 10:45 - 10:47
    Who fights while they walk?
  • 10:47 - 10:50
    That's why in negotiations,
    often, when things get tough,
  • 10:50 - 10:52
    people go for walks in the woods.
  • 10:52 - 10:58
    So the idea came to me
    of, what about inspiring a path,
  • 10:58 - 11:02
    a route -- think the Silk Route,
    think the Appalachian Trail --
  • 11:02 - 11:06
    that followed in the footsteps of Abraham?
  • 11:06 - 11:08
    People said, "That's crazy. You can't.
  • 11:08 - 11:11
    You can't retrace the footsteps
    of Abraham -- it's too insecure,
  • 11:11 - 11:13
    you've got to cross all these borders,
  • 11:13 - 11:15
    it goes across 10 different countries
    in the Middle East,
  • 11:15 - 11:17
    because it unites them all."
  • 11:17 - 11:19
    And so we studied the idea at Harvard.
  • 11:19 - 11:20
    We did our due diligence.
  • 11:20 - 11:21
    And then a few years ago,
  • 11:21 - 11:24
    a group of us, about 25 of us
    from 10 different countries,
  • 11:24 - 11:27
    decided to see if we could retrace
    the footsteps of Abraham,
  • 11:27 - 11:30
    going from his initial birthplace
    in the city of Urfa
  • 11:30 - 11:32
    in Southern Turkey, Northern Mesopotamia.
  • 11:33 - 11:36
    And we then took a bus and took some walks
  • 11:36 - 11:40
    and went to Harran, where, in the Bible,
    he sets off on his journey.
  • 11:40 - 11:42
    Then we crossed the border
    into Syria, went to Aleppo,
  • 11:42 - 11:45
    which, turns out, is named after Abraham.
  • 11:45 - 11:46
    We went to Damascus,
  • 11:46 - 11:49
    which has a long history
    associated with Abraham.
  • 11:49 - 11:52
    We then came to Northern Jordan,
  • 11:52 - 11:57
    to Jerusalem -- which is all
    about Abraham -- to Bethlehem,
  • 11:57 - 12:00
    and finally, to the place
    where he's buried, in Hebron.
  • 12:00 - 12:02
    So effectively, we went from womb to tomb.
  • 12:02 - 12:04
    We showed it could be done.
  • 12:04 - 12:05
    It was an amazing journey.
  • 12:05 - 12:07
    Let me ask you a question.
  • 12:07 - 12:11
    How many of you have had the experience
    of being in a strange neighborhood
  • 12:11 - 12:14
    or strange land,
  • 12:14 - 12:17
    and a total stranger, perfect stranger,
  • 12:17 - 12:20
    comes up to you
    and shows you some kindness --
  • 12:20 - 12:22
    maybe invites you into their home,
    gives you a drink,
  • 12:22 - 12:24
    gives you a coffee, gives you a meal?
  • 12:24 - 12:26
    How many of you have ever
    had that experience?
  • 12:26 - 12:29
    That's the essence of the Abraham Path.
  • 12:29 - 12:32
    That's what you discover as you go
    into these villages in the Middle East
  • 12:32 - 12:34
    where you expect hostility,
  • 12:34 - 12:36
    and you get the most amazing hospitality,
  • 12:36 - 12:38
    all associated with Abraham:
  • 12:38 - 12:42
    "In the name of Father Ibrahim,
    let me offer you some food."
  • 12:42 - 12:43
    So what we discovered
  • 12:43 - 12:46
    is that Abraham is not just a figure
    out of a book for those people;
  • 12:46 - 12:49
    he's alive, he's a living presence.
  • 12:49 - 12:51
    And to make a long story short,
  • 12:51 - 12:53
    in the last couple of years now,
  • 12:53 - 12:58
    thousands of people have begun to walk
    parts of the path of Abraham
  • 12:58 - 13:00
    in the Middle East,
  • 13:00 - 13:03
    enjoying the hospitality
    of the people there.
  • 13:03 - 13:06
    They've begun to walk
    in Israel and Palestine,
  • 13:06 - 13:09
    in Jordan, in Turkey, in Syria.
  • 13:09 - 13:10
    It's an amazing experience.
  • 13:10 - 13:12
    Men, women, young people, old people --
  • 13:12 - 13:15
    more women than men,
    actually, interestingly.
  • 13:15 - 13:17
    For those who can't walk,
  • 13:17 - 13:20
    who are unable to get there right now,
  • 13:20 - 13:23
    people started to organize walks
    in cities, in their own communities.
  • 13:23 - 13:26
    In Cincinnati, for instance,
    they organized a walk
  • 13:26 - 13:30
    from a church to a mosque to a synagogue
    and all had an Abrahamic meal together.
  • 13:30 - 13:31
    It was Abraham Path Day.
  • 13:31 - 13:34
    In São Paulo, Brazil,
    it's become an annual event
  • 13:34 - 13:37
    for thousands of people to run
    in a virtual Abraham Path Run,
  • 13:37 - 13:39
    uniting the different communities.
  • 13:39 - 13:42
    The media love it; they really adore it.
  • 13:42 - 13:46
    They lavish attention on it
    because it's visual
  • 13:46 - 13:47
    and it spreads the idea,
  • 13:47 - 13:52
    this idea of Abrahamic hospitality,
    of kindness towards strangers.
  • 13:52 - 13:56
    And just a couple weeks ago,
    there was an NPR story on it.
  • 13:57 - 13:58
    Last month,
  • 13:58 - 14:04
    there was a piece
    in the Manchester Guardian about it,
  • 14:04 - 14:06
    two whole pages.
  • 14:06 - 14:10
    And they quoted a villager
  • 14:10 - 14:13
    who said, "This walk connects
    us to the world."
  • 14:13 - 14:16
    He said, "It was like a light
    that went on in our lives --
  • 14:16 - 14:17
    it brought us hope."
  • 14:17 - 14:20
    And so that's what it's about.
  • 14:20 - 14:21
    But it's not just about psychology;
  • 14:21 - 14:23
    it's about economics.
  • 14:23 - 14:26
    Because as people walk, they spend money.
  • 14:26 - 14:29
    And this woman right here, Um Ahmad,
  • 14:29 - 14:32
    is a woman who lives on the path
    in Northern Jordan.
  • 14:32 - 14:34
    She's desperately poor.
  • 14:34 - 14:38
    She's partially blind,
    her husband can't work,
  • 14:38 - 14:40
    she's got seven kids.
  • 14:40 - 14:42
    But what she can do is cook.
  • 14:43 - 14:45
    And so she's begun to cook
    for some groups of walkers
  • 14:45 - 14:49
    who come through the village
    and have a meal in her home.
  • 14:49 - 14:52
    They sit on the floor --
    she doesn't even have a tablecloth.
  • 14:52 - 14:54
    She makes the most delicious food,
  • 14:54 - 14:57
    that's fresh from the herbs
    in the surrounding countryside.
  • 14:57 - 14:59
    And so more and more walkers have come,
  • 14:59 - 15:03
    and lately she's begun to earn an income
    to support her family.
  • 15:03 - 15:06
    And so she told our team there, she said,
  • 15:06 - 15:09
    "You have made me visible
  • 15:09 - 15:13
    in a village where people
    were once ashamed to look at me."
  • 15:14 - 15:16
    That's the potential of the Abraham Path.
  • 15:16 - 15:19
    There are literally hundreds
    of those kinds of communities
  • 15:19 - 15:21
    across the Middle East, across the path.
  • 15:22 - 15:25
    The potential is basically
    to change the game.
  • 15:25 - 15:29
    And to change the game, you have to change
    the frame, the way we see things --
  • 15:29 - 15:35
    to change the frame
    from hostility to hospitality,
  • 15:35 - 15:37
    from terrorism to tourism.
  • 15:37 - 15:40
    And in that sense, the Abraham Path
  • 15:40 - 15:41
    is a game-changer.
  • 15:42 - 15:44
    Let me just show you one thing.
  • 15:44 - 15:45
    I have a little acorn here
  • 15:45 - 15:49
    that I picked up while I was walking
    on the path earlier this year.
  • 15:49 - 15:52

    with the oak tree, of course --

    it's still in its early phase.

    What would the oak tree look like?

    When I think back to my childhood,

    a good part of which I spent,
    after being born here in Chicago,

    I spent in Europe.
  • 16:08 - 16:15
    If you had been in the ruins of, say,
    London in 1945, or Berlin,
  • 16:15 - 16:16
    and you had said,
  • 16:16 - 16:17
    "Sixty years from now,
  • 16:17 - 16:21
    this is going to be the most peaceful,
    prosperous part of the planet,"
  • 16:21 - 16:24
    people would have thought
    you were certifiably insane.
  • 16:24 - 16:28
    But they did it, thanks
    to a common identity, Europe,
  • 16:28 - 16:30
    and a common economy.
  • 16:30 - 16:33
    So my question is,
    if it can be done in Europe,
  • 16:33 - 16:35
    why not in the Middle East?
  • 16:35 - 16:40
    Why not, thanks to a common identity,
    which is the story of Abraham,
  • 16:40 - 16:44
    and thanks to a common economy that
    would be based, in good part, on tourism?
  • 16:45 - 16:47
    So let me conclude, then,
  • 16:47 - 16:51
    by saying that in the last 35 years,
  • 16:51 - 16:53
    as I've worked
    in some of the most dangerous,
  • 16:53 - 16:56
    difficult and intractable conflicts
    around the planet,
  • 16:56 - 17:02
    I have yet to see one conflict
    that I felt could not be transformed.
  • 17:02 - 17:04
    It's not easy, of course.
  • 17:05 - 17:06
    But it's possible.
  • 17:06 - 17:08
    It was done in South Africa.
  • 17:08 - 17:10
    It was done in Northern Ireland.
  • 17:10 - 17:12
    It could be done anywhere.
  • 17:12 - 17:15
    It simply depends on us.
  • 17:15 - 17:17
    It depends on us taking the third side.
  • 17:18 - 17:22
    So let me invite you to consider
    taking the third side,
  • 17:22 - 17:23
    even as a very small step.
  • 17:23 - 17:25
    We're about to take a break in a moment.

    Just go up to someone
  • 17:27 - 17:30
    who's from a different culture,
    a different country,
  • 17:30 - 17:33
    a different ethnicity --
    some difference --

    and engage them in a conversation.

    Listen to them.
  • 17:35 - 17:37
    That's a third-side act.
  • 17:37 - 17:39
    That's walking Abraham's Path.

    After a TED Talk,

    why not a TED Walk?

    So let me just leave you
    with three things.

    One is, the secret to peace
    is the third side.

    The third side is us.

    Each of us, with a single step,

    can take the world, can bring the world
  • 18:02 - 18:04
    a step closer to peace.
  • 18:05 - 18:07
    There's an old African proverb that goes:

    "When spiderwebs unite,
  • 18:10 - 18:12
    they can halt even the lion."
  • 18:13 - 18:17
    If we're able to unite
    our third-side webs of peace,

    we can even halt the lion of war.
