Jesus Wants Fellowship With Us - Lee Dodd

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    Luke 24.
  • 0:03 - 0:04
I would love to read the whole
  • 0:04 - 0:07
    of verse 13-35,
  • 0:07 - 0:09
but for the sake of time
  • 0:09 - 0:12
let's pick up in verse 25.
  • 0:12 - 0:14
I think we are probably familiar
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    with this account of Jesus
  • 0:16 - 0:18
    meeting the two disciples
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    on the road to Emmaus.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
In verse 15, we see that Jesus Himself
  • 0:22 - 0:26
drew near and went with them.
  • 0:26 - 0:31
    I'll read v. 25 down through 32.
  • 0:31 - 0:33
"And He (Jesus) said to them,
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    'O foolish ones,
  • 0:35 - 0:37
and slow of heart to believe
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    all the prophets have spoken.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
Was it not necessary that the Christ
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    should suffer these things
  • 0:43 - 0:46
    and enter into His glory?'
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    And beginning with Moses
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    and all the prophets,
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    He interpreted to them
    in all the Scriptures,
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    the things concerning Himself.
  • 0:55 - 0:57
So they drew near to the village
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    to which they were going.
  • 0:59 - 1:03
He acted as if He were going farther,
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    but they urged Him strongly,
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    saying, 'stay with us.
  • 1:07 - 1:08
    For it is toward evening
  • 1:08 - 1:11
and the day is now far spent.'
  • 1:11 - 1:13
So He went in to stay with them.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
When He was at table with them,
  • 1:16 - 1:19
He took bread and blessed and broke it
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    and gave it to them,
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    and their eyes were opened,
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    and they recognized Him.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
And He vanished from their sight.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    They said to each other,
  • 1:30 - 1:33
'Did not our hearts burn within us
  • 1:33 - 1:36
while He talked to us on the road,
  • 1:36 - 1:39
while He opened to us the Scriptures?'"
  • 1:39 - 1:45
So, commonly, there's rich content shared
  • 1:45 - 1:49
    about Jesus opening the Scriptures
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    to His disciples.
  • 1:51 - 1:54
But that's not what I want
    to focus on this morning.
  • 1:54 - 1:58
I want to just look at two things really
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    from verses 28 and 29,
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    which I'll re-read.
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    "So they..." this is Jesus
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    and the two disciples,
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    "drew near to the village
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    to which they were going.
  • 2:10 - 2:16
    He (Jesus) acted as if
    He was going farther,
  • 2:16 - 2:20
but they urged Him strongly, saying,
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    'Stay with us.'"
  • 2:22 - 2:24
And I think the encouragement here
  • 2:24 - 2:27
    is two-fold.
  • 2:27 - 2:31
Number one, it struck me as I was reading
  • 2:31 - 2:34
    verse 28,
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    to see that Jesus acted
  • 2:37 - 2:39
as though He was going to go
  • 2:39 - 2:42
on down the road to the next village.
  • 2:42 - 2:47
    In some sense, it looks
    like He was putting on.
  • 2:47 - 2:48
    And we say why?
  • 2:48 - 2:53
Why is Jesus acting as if
He's going to go on farther?
  • 2:53 - 2:56
We see clearly when we read v. 29
  • 2:56 - 2:59
why Jesus was acting as if
  • 2:59 - 3:01
He was going to go on down the road.
  • 3:01 - 3:04
He was provoking within His people
  • 3:04 - 3:07
a desire to cry out to Him,
  • 3:07 - 3:11
    to entreat Him to stay.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    And this is remarkable.
  • 3:13 - 3:17
This is the warm, relational Jesus Christ
  • 3:17 - 3:21
that so desires the hearts of His people
  • 3:21 - 3:24
that He will even act in such a way
  • 3:24 - 3:28
to draw out our affections to Him.
  • 3:28 - 3:31
    And this is happening today.
  • 3:31 - 3:32
    If you're a believer here,
  • 3:32 - 3:34
in my life and your life,
  • 3:34 - 3:37
there are things that our kind,
  • 3:37 - 3:40
    dear Savior does
  • 3:40 - 3:43
    to draw out our affections toward Him;
  • 3:43 - 3:47
    to stir up our love toward Him;
  • 3:47 - 3:53
    to drive us into the
    mode of entreating Him.
  • 3:53 - 3:56
He wants communion with His people.
  • 3:56 - 4:00
    He had no intention of
    going on down the road.
  • 4:00 - 4:03
He wants to be with His people.
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    And that is remarkable.
  • 4:05 - 4:08
    If that doesn't fuel prayer,
    I don't know what does.
  • 4:08 - 4:15
He is delighting in the prayers
    of His people this morning.
  • 4:15 - 4:17
    Think of Jacob wrestling
  • 4:17 - 4:20
with the Angel of the Lord.
  • 4:20 - 4:22
    What is that about?
  • 4:22 - 4:24
The Angel of the Lord -
  • 4:24 - 4:27
    this pre-incarnate Christ.
  • 4:27 - 4:31
    He's not wrestling with anyone.
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    He's not challenged.
  • 4:33 - 4:38
He's not actually kept by Jacob.
  • 4:38 - 4:43
What does He say? "Let me go."
  • 4:43 - 4:46
He could withdraw at any moment.
  • 4:46 - 4:48
    Why "let me go"?
  • 4:48 - 4:53
    Because He was aiming
    for a response in Jacob.
  • 4:53 - 4:58
"I won't let you go, unless You bless me."
  • 4:58 - 5:01
    You remember Samson's dad?
  • 5:01 - 5:03
    Manoah in Judges 13.
  • 5:03 - 5:06
And the Angel of the Lord visits.
  • 5:06 - 5:08
    What is happening here?
  • 5:08 - 5:10
    There's this encounter -
  • 5:10 - 5:12
    this divine encounter,
  • 5:12 - 5:15
    and Manoah comes to the
    point where he says,
  • 5:15 - 5:18
    "Please let me detain you
  • 5:18 - 5:22
and make a meal for you."
  • 5:22 - 5:25
I'm not even going to eat the meal,
  • 5:25 - 5:28
    but I'll be detained.
  • 5:28 - 5:30
    The Syro-Phoenician woman
    in the New Testament.
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    That whole encounter?
  • 5:32 - 5:36
    Boy, that kind of reads
    confusing at first, doesn't it?
  • 5:36 - 5:37
    Jesus seemingly insults her.
  • 5:37 - 5:40
    Jesus seemingly ignores her.
  • 5:40 - 5:42
    Why? What is He doing?
  • 5:42 - 5:45
    He is cultivating in the
    heart of His people
  • 5:45 - 5:51
this strong desire to seek Him.
  • 5:51 - 5:54
So, I think that's one thing we glean
  • 5:54 - 5:55
    from the text.
  • 5:55 - 5:57
And secondly, you just can't get away
  • 5:57 - 6:00
from this phrase in verse 29.
  • 6:00 - 6:07
    "They (the two disciples)
    urged Him strongly."
  • 6:07 - 6:11
    Urged Him strongly.
  • 6:11 - 6:13
All I'll say about it for the sake of time
  • 6:13 - 6:17
is we ought to be those that ask much
  • 6:17 - 6:19
    and ask often.
  • 6:19 - 6:23
We ought to be those that lose nothing
  • 6:23 - 6:27
    because we're not asking.
  • 6:27 - 6:33
So, let's storm that gracious throne
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    this morning.
  • 6:35 - 6:38
    Let's boldly entreat our kind,
  • 6:38 - 6:41
    warm-hearted Savior.
  • 6:41 - 6:47
    Let's pray.
  • 6:47 - 6:52
Father, there is none like You.
  • 6:52 - 6:56
    Divine Son, our
    tender-hearted High Priest.
  • 6:56 - 6:59
    There is none like You.
  • 6:59 - 7:03
Holy Spirit, our Help and Comforter.
  • 7:03 - 7:06
    There's none like You.
  • 7:06 - 7:09
    We desire Your presence.
  • 7:09 - 7:12
We want to detain You this morning.
  • 7:12 - 7:16
We want You to draw near this morning.
  • 7:16 - 7:18
    We need Your help.
  • 7:18 - 7:20
    We need Your presence.
  • 7:20 - 7:23
We need You to do what You did
  • 7:23 - 7:24
    for those two disciples
  • 7:24 - 7:25
    on the road to Emmaus,
  • 7:25 - 7:28
    and open our eyes
  • 7:28 - 7:32
to the precious truth of Your Word.
  • 7:32 - 7:36
    So, come, and infiltrate
    this time of prayer.
  • 7:36 - 7:39
    Manifest Your presence to us,
  • 7:39 - 7:41
    in Jesus' name.
