Practical Advice to Avoid Burnout As a Pastor - Clint Leiter

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    There are some practical things
  • 0:03 - 0:08
in this work of being a pastor
  • 0:08 - 0:13
in the way of not burning out.
  • 0:13 - 0:18
You want to be there over the long haul.
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    Charles and Dick -
  • 0:20 - 0:25
they had a celebration up there
  • 0:25 - 0:26
    at Lake Road.
  • 0:26 - 0:30
Forty years in the ministry back then.
  • 0:30 - 0:35
    It's forty-plus now.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
That's what you want long term.
  • 0:38 - 0:44
    Survive as long as God
    would have you there.
  • 0:44 - 0:46
There are maybe some practical things
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    that help someone to survive
  • 0:49 - 0:51
in the work of the ministry
  • 0:51 - 0:54
    that are sometimes overlooked.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
I guess I could just offer that
  • 0:56 - 1:00
    in consideration.
  • 1:00 - 1:04
I've been told by some to take a day off.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
Take one day out of the week as a pastor
  • 1:07 - 1:09
and make it a day off.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
I was initially reluctant to do that,
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    but I have adopted that.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
Tim and Ruby Conway suggested that to me
  • 1:17 - 1:20
in concern for me during the hard times
  • 1:20 - 1:21
    that we were going through,
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    and it was very helpful.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    I'm so thankful they did.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    During that time off,
  • 1:27 - 1:31
I don't hold to it as something
  • 1:31 - 1:34
that is binding in the sense that
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    if someone had an emergency,
  • 1:36 - 1:38
I would turn my back on them.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    It's not like that.
  • 1:40 - 1:44
But my focus on that day off is different.
  • 1:44 - 1:48
    I don't pore over the
    books on that day off.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    You know, Solomon said
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    excessive attention to books
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    is wearying to the body.
  • 1:55 - 1:58
We need a day off during that time.
  • 1:58 - 2:02
And so I don't pore over the books
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    quite like I would normally
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    on that day off.
  • 2:06 - 2:13
I tend to do things that
    are more recreational.
  • 2:13 - 2:18
    I like landscaping and flowers.
  • 2:18 - 2:22
    I am a fan of - a supporter of - a hobby
  • 2:22 - 2:26
for a man to have; a pastor to have.
  • 2:26 - 2:27
    Something that's mindless.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    Something that he enjoys doing.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    I think that helps.
  • 2:32 - 2:37
It helps the emotional; it helps the mind
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    to relax and unwind.
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    You can't keep that heart
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    strung tight all the time.
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    You've got to let the
    strings loose sometimes.
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    And so I have flowers.
  • 2:48 - 2:53
    I like to shoot guns
    and do things like that.
  • 2:53 - 2:54
    Something relaxing,
  • 2:54 - 2:57
something that lets the mind go.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
Those are helps to avoid burnout.
  • 3:00 - 3:04
It helps to get physical exercise
  • 3:04 - 3:08
for a man in the ministry.
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    The way that I'm wired,
  • 3:10 - 3:12
for some reason, I've got to have
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    some intense physical exercise
  • 3:14 - 3:18
on a regular basis or I start feeling
  • 3:18 - 3:21
low and lethargic and not doing very well.
  • 3:21 - 3:24
So I go to the gym.
  • 3:24 - 3:27
    I do CrossFit myself.
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    Others might go on walks
  • 3:29 - 3:31
or others might take up running.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
I had a lot of benefit from running
  • 3:34 - 3:37
when I was able to do it.
  • 3:37 - 3:40
    The Lord just came to
    me and cleared my thoughts.
  • 3:40 - 3:44
Sermons ordered themselves on a nice run.
  • 3:44 - 3:46
So those kinds of things really help
  • 3:46 - 3:50
in the way of not being burned out
  • 3:50 - 3:56
    and maintaining some
    sort of mental resilience,
  • 3:56 - 4:02
    emotional resilience in
    the work of the ministry.
  • 4:02 - 4:11
    Kind of an attitude of
    outlasting problems.
  • 4:11 - 4:14
A hunker-down kind of an attitude.
  • 4:14 - 4:16
The Lord will help me through it.
  • 4:16 - 4:18
    We'll endure it. It's just a season.
  • 4:18 - 4:19
    We can get through it.
  • 4:19 - 4:25
We tend to think it's going
to be the end of us, you know.
  • 4:25 - 4:31
So the Lord helps in those ways too.
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    James: Any other practical things
  • 4:33 - 4:36
or those kind of the ones
    you had on your mind?
  • 4:36 - 4:39
Clint: We need to be able to get rest.
  • 4:39 - 4:41
We've got to be able to sleep.
  • 4:41 - 4:44
    If you can't sleep,
  • 4:44 - 4:47
    you're going to go down
    hill in a hurry emotionally.
  • 4:47 - 4:50
You've got to be able to
    get some rest and sleep.
  • 4:50 - 4:53
    Keep regular hours.
  • 4:53 - 4:56
Not burn the midnight oil - up all night
  • 4:56 - 5:00
    trying to prepare a sermon
    for Sunday or something.
  • 5:00 - 5:03
That might be an emergency situation,
  • 5:03 - 5:06
but it ought not to be the regular.
  • 5:06 - 5:08
There's no reason why the Lord
  • 5:08 - 5:10
can't bring a sermon on Monday,
  • 5:10 - 5:14
and it doesn't have to come on Saturday.
  • 5:14 - 5:17
So I start in the work early.
  • 5:17 - 5:19
If Monday's my day off, I might not
  • 5:19 - 5:22
give any thought to it on Monday,
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    but when Tuesday comes,
  • 5:24 - 5:27
I start working on what I need to speak on
  • 5:27 - 5:28
    in the following Sunday.
  • 5:28 - 5:31
I don't want to arrive at Saturday
  • 5:31 - 5:32
    and not have anything.
  • 5:32 - 5:34
    It's too stressful for me.
  • 5:34 - 5:36
    That's me.
  • 5:36 - 5:39
Other men are really able to do that,
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    but I'm not.
  • 5:41 - 5:44
I'm too weak for that approach.
  • 5:44 - 5:45
    I've got to start early.
  • 5:45 - 5:47
    James: Me too.
  • 5:47 - 5:49
Clint: And so that's where I'm at.
  • 5:49 - 5:52
    Learn to compartmentalize. That helps.
  • 5:52 - 5:54
In other words, here's this issue
  • 5:54 - 5:57
    or here's this thing I
    need to think about,
  • 5:57 - 6:00
but I'm not going to think about it now.
  • 6:00 - 6:03
    I'm going to think about
    it two days from now.
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    When two days are up,
    then I'll think about it.
  • 6:05 - 6:07
    In the meantime,
  • 6:07 - 6:09
    I'll let my mind rest.
  • 6:09 - 6:11
    Compartmentalize.
  • 6:11 - 6:15
It's maybe just a mind game,
  • 6:15 - 6:18
    but it helps.
  • 6:18 - 6:20
And then, don't lie to yourself.
  • 6:20 - 6:22
When that day comes, take it up
  • 6:22 - 6:24
and begin to think about it seriously.
  • 6:24 - 6:27
    But in the meantime,
  • 6:27 - 6:29
    as best you're able,
  • 6:29 - 6:32
    don't think about it then.
  • 6:32 - 6:36
    It's a challenge because problems -
  • 6:36 - 6:38
    they tyrannize your mind.
  • 6:38 - 6:41
    They take over.
  • 6:41 - 6:44
    You can't ignore a T-Rex, you know,
  • 6:44 - 6:46
    in the dinosaur world.
  • 6:46 - 6:49
And so problems become like that.
  • 6:49 - 6:52
    They're hard to ignore.
  • 6:52 - 6:56
But in reality, we're not ignoring it.
  • 6:56 - 6:57
    We're just postponing the time
  • 6:57 - 7:00
    when we're going to
    put the energy into it.
  • 7:00 - 7:05
    That's I guess what I mean
    by compartmentalizing.
  • 7:05 - 7:07
    It's a trick that's helpful
  • 7:07 - 7:11
when it comes to not burning out
  • 7:11 - 7:14
    and lasting.
