Don't Let Anyone Take Your Crown - Tim Conway

  • 0:01 - 0:06
    The apostle is clearly
    indicating that false teachers
  • 0:06 - 0:09
    are involved in this
    "every wind of doctrine"
  • 0:09 - 0:14
    and that spiritual children
    are especially vulnerable.
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    But keep reading.
  • 0:15 - 0:19
    "By craftiness and deceitful schemes,"
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    or "in cunning craftiness
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    lying in wait to deceive,"
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    or "deceitful plotting"
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    or "deceitful scheming."
  • 0:28 - 0:32
    That word "scheming," "schemes."
  • 0:32 - 0:35
You know it only shows up
one other time in Scripture -
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    right here in this epistle
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    where Paul says this:
  • 0:39 - 0:41
"Put on the whole armor of God
  • 0:41 - 0:42
that you may be able to stand
  • 0:42 - 0:46
against the schemes of the devil."
  • 0:46 - 0:49
Here's the thing about a scheme,
  • 0:49 - 0:53
    or plotting,
  • 0:53 - 0:58
    it's intentional.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    They know what they're doing.
  • 1:00 - 1:04
Do you know several years ago,
  • 1:04 - 1:09
I preached on each one of
    those churches in Asia Minor
  • 1:09 - 1:12
that come out of Revelation 2 and 3.
  • 1:12 - 1:18
I preached some of those over
    and over throughout the years.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    I just brought up the
    church at Philadelphia
  • 1:20 - 1:23
to the brethren up there at Fond-du-lac.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    I'm reminded all over again,
  • 1:25 - 1:29
    there's a very haunting statement
  • 1:29 - 1:35
said by the Lord to those at Philadelphia.
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    Listen to these.
  • 1:38 - 1:42
    "I am coming soon.
  • 1:42 - 1:48
    Hold fast what you have
  • 1:48 - 1:54
so that no one may seize your crown."
  • 1:54 - 1:57
    We can just read that.
  • 1:57 - 2:01
Yes, you know, I see it. I hear it.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
"...So that no one may seize your crown."
  • 2:04 - 2:08
Do you ever stop and think
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    why would He say that?
  • 2:11 - 2:15
Why does He look at His people and say,
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    "You better watch out
  • 2:17 - 2:21
    that nobody seize your crown"?
  • 2:21 - 2:25
That's an odd thing to say.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    Unless of course
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    there are people running around
  • 2:30 - 2:35
    and there are people in
the crowd real close to you
  • 2:35 - 2:39
    who are crown seizers.
  • 2:39 - 2:42
And that would be a healthy warning.
  • 2:42 - 2:45
Remember, they know what they're doing.
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    There's craftiness.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
And you know what Scripture says?
  • 2:50 - 2:54
There's these men who it says
  • 2:54 - 2:57
    "through the insincerity of liars
  • 2:57 - 3:00
    whose consciences are seared."
  • 3:00 - 3:02
You've got people around you -
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    they're liars.
  • 3:05 - 3:08
    Oh, and the picture is
    they infiltrate the church.
  • 3:08 - 3:11
    They're here among us now.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    They're liars.
  • 3:13 - 3:15
And see, we can look at somebody and say
  • 3:15 - 3:17
how could they be so bold?
  • 3:17 - 3:20
    Listen, you have to hear
    what's said there.
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    Their consciences are seared.
  • 3:22 - 3:26
You get people around you that can't feel.
  • 3:26 - 3:29
They don't care if you go to hell
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    because they can't feel.
  • 3:32 - 3:38
They don't feel any sympathy for you.
  • 3:38 - 3:40
But you know what it says?
  • 3:40 - 3:44
It says that in the later times,
  • 3:44 - 3:46
you're going to have these people
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    that depart from the faith.
  • 3:48 - 3:50
And it says they're going to be devoted
  • 3:50 - 3:56
    to deceitful spirits and
    the teachings of demons.
  • 3:56 - 3:58
Even if men's consciences are seared,
  • 3:58 - 4:01
even if there's an ignorance aspect
  • 4:01 - 4:04
to some of the things that people do,
  • 4:04 - 4:07
    you can know this:
  • 4:07 - 4:11
    There are spirits and demons
    behind these things.
  • 4:11 - 4:13
And even if men sometimes are ignorant
  • 4:13 - 4:15
and don't know what they're doing
  • 4:15 - 4:16
or their consciences are so seared
  • 4:16 - 4:18
they can't feel what they're doing,
  • 4:18 - 4:21
I'll tell you this, the demons know
    exactly what they're doing.
  • 4:21 - 4:23
When you get to chapter 6,
  • 4:23 - 4:26
    that's where it talks about
    the schemes of the devil.
  • 4:26 - 4:29
And this is the thing about being novice.
  • 4:29 - 4:32
This is the thing about not knowing
    how to handle the Scriptures.
  • 4:32 - 4:36
    This is the thing about
    being a child spiritually.
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    There is a danger.
  • 4:38 - 4:40
And when you hear about cunning
  • 4:40 - 4:44
    and craftiness and deceitful schemes,
  • 4:44 - 4:46
when the Lord says to His church -
  • 4:46 - 4:50
    and this was a healthy
    church at Philadelphia -
  • 4:50 - 4:55
"Beware that nobody take your crown..."
  • 4:55 - 5:02
There are people who by scheme and plot
  • 5:02 - 5:04
    are reaching for it.
  • 5:04 - 5:06
    That's the picture in Scripture.
  • 5:06 - 5:11
    And the warnings are profuse.
  • 5:11 - 5:13
    Constant warnings against
  • 5:13 - 5:18
    this kind of particular
    danger throughout Scripture.
  • 5:18 - 5:19
    Didn't Jesus Christ say it?
  • 5:19 - 5:23
Matthew 7 - we know there on
    the Sermon on the Mount.
  • 5:23 - 5:26
He said "beware of false prophets." Why?
  • 5:26 - 5:29
    Why must you beware?
  • 5:29 - 5:30
    Don't fall to sleep. Why?
  • 5:30 - 5:37
    Because they come to
    you in sheep's clothing,
  • 5:37 - 5:40
    but inwardly they're ravening wolves.
  • 5:40 - 5:42
Do you know what that means?
  • 5:42 - 5:45
You see what's so difficult about this?
  • 5:45 - 5:50
    We hear about crown stealers.
  • 5:50 - 5:58
    And you envision this
    really ugly, scary guy
  • 5:58 - 6:00
    and he's reaching for it.
  • 6:00 - 6:01
It's like the guy you meet in the dark
  • 6:01 - 6:06
that you'd never want to meet in the dark.
  • 6:06 - 6:10
But that's not what they look like.
  • 6:10 - 6:15
    They come in sheep's clothing.
  • 6:15 - 6:18
    They look like a Christian.
  • 6:18 - 6:20
    In fact, you may remember
    me saying in the past,
  • 6:20 - 6:22
    Lloyd-Jones was quite convinced
  • 6:22 - 6:25
that it's the guy rough around the edges
  • 6:25 - 6:30
    and the guy that's ugly
    that is usually God's man.
  • 6:30 - 6:34
You get people - they look good.
  • 6:34 - 6:38
    They look good.
  • 6:38 - 6:42
The problem is these people have names
  • 6:42 - 6:48
and they're often friendly and likable
  • 6:48 - 6:53
    and at least externally,
    they're nice guys.
  • 6:53 - 6:55
    They're attractive.
  • 6:55 - 6:59
Listen, the devil is behind these people
  • 6:59 - 7:02
and he wants to take your crown
  • 7:02 - 7:05
and he wants to damn your soul.
  • 7:05 - 7:10
    And while we're children,
    we're vulnerable.
  • 7:10 - 7:13
    This is why you need
to grow up out of this
  • 7:13 - 7:15
    because we're vulnerable.
  • 7:15 - 7:17
    But inside, they are ravenous.
  • 7:17 - 7:20
They have faces and they have names
  • 7:20 - 7:23
    that you associate with Christianity.
  • 7:23 - 7:26
    You associate with going
    to church on Sunday.
  • 7:26 - 7:29
    You call them brother!
  • 7:29 - 7:34
    But I'll tell you what,
    eternity will show.
  • 7:34 - 7:36
When the veil is pulled back,
  • 7:36 - 7:43
    you're going to be startled
    by some of the people.
  • 7:43 - 7:45
And they knew what they were doing.
  • 7:45 - 7:48
    Or the demons behind them,
    they full well knew
  • 7:48 - 7:50
    what was going on.
  • 7:50 - 7:52
And you know where they are?
  • 7:52 - 7:55
    They're in here.
  • 7:55 - 7:57
    They're on the Internet.
  • 7:57 - 8:00
    They're on Facebook.
  • 8:00 - 8:02
    They're on YouTube.
  • 8:02 - 8:06
    They're on the radio.
  • 8:06 - 8:10
    Spiritual infants -
    they're the easiest prey.
  • 8:10 - 8:13
    These people look like sheep.
  • 8:13 - 8:15
    They're all around us.
  • 8:15 - 8:18
    This excerpt was taken
    from the full sermon:
  • 8:18 - 8:20
