Not Synced
Good morning
-
Not Synced
dear Thay dear sangha, Today is the 9th,
Sunday, the 9th of December, 2018.
-
Not Synced
We are in the Assembly of Stars
meditation hall in Lower Hamlet,
-
Not Synced
and this is the last of the Dharma talks
-
Not Synced
before the end of our three month
retreat together .
-
Not Synced
So I feel a special sense of
-
Not Synced
speaking to that.
-
Not Synced
Most of us have been here
for the three month retreat together.
-
Not Synced
We've been
-
Not Synced
those of you who came
-
Not Synced
to Plum Village for three months
have experienced
-
Not Synced
going through ups and downs.
-
Not Synced
And maybe,
-
Not Synced
some of the time you wondered,
'Why did I come?'
-
Not Synced
I don't know. Excuse me.
-
Not Synced
It's a loud blow.
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
Maybe you felt, 'Yeah, I'd be better off
-
Not Synced
in a cave somewhere'.
-
Not Synced
Maybe in the Pole, or somewhere,
-
Not Synced
in some mountain.
-
Not Synced
When we practice together,
we really
-
Not Synced
have to meet each other,
-
Not Synced
and get along together.
-
Not Synced
If we don't get along together,
-
Not Synced
because we are living together 24/7,
-
Not Synced
it really shows up.
It is difficult to stay calm and to enjoy.
-
Not Synced
So actually, a lot of the practice that
you've been learning these three months
-
Not Synced
is how to live in harmony,
how to get along.
-
Not Synced
How to practice loving speech,
-
Not Synced
but also you have to communicate
when there is a difficulty,
-
Not Synced
but with loving speech.
-
Not Synced
How to let go
-
Not Synced
of your preference
and maybe of your irritation.
-
Not Synced
How to see the other person
is also suffering.
-
Not Synced
Maybe see that
-
Not Synced
try to understand them
so you can let go of judgment.
-
Not Synced
And we have practices, like Beginning Anew
that we do regularly.
-
Not Synced
We do that formally, we sit down
-
Not Synced
and practice expressing gratitude,
noticing the good things in each other,
-
Not Synced
and also expressing when we have a regret
towards each other.
-
Not Synced
It is very renewing practice.
-
Not Synced
We had - It is also,
we call it the season of Shining Light.
-
Not Synced
So because we see each other,
-
Not Synced
we are rooming together, eating together,
working together,
-
Not Synced
we see each other and we have
something called the sangha eye.
-
Not Synced
Because, ourselves, if we are just
practising alone,
-
Not Synced
there is a number of things that we miss
from practising in a community.
-
Not Synced
One is that because
we are not interacting,
-
Not Synced
things don't maybe come up
in the same way.
-
Not Synced
So when we are interacting we get to see
ourselves,
-
Not Synced
but also we have blind spots.
-
Not Synced
And so the it's very helpful for us,
for the people we trust,
-
Not Synced
we open ourselves up,
we allow ourselves to be
-
Not Synced
open to receiving their view about us.
-
Not Synced
And that view is expressed
with all of the love and appreciation also
-
Not Synced
for the whole of us
not just pointing to the difficulty.
-
Not Synced
So we also practice this
in the three months retreat,
-
Not Synced
shining light on each other's practice,
-
Not Synced
in order to help the other person
have more freedom,
-
Not Synced
more growth in themselves,
and more happiness.
-
Not Synced
Sometimes it can be a bit scary
-
Not Synced
to allow ourselves
-
Not Synced
to have people share like that.
-
Not Synced
I've known people run away.
-
Not Synced
But when they allow themselves to
they only experience the love.
-
Not Synced
I'm sure there are
some exceptions to that.
-
Not Synced
Sometimes people can get hurt also,
and then we also have compassion
-
Not Synced
that we are learning the practice.
-
Not Synced
So living together is
a practice in itself.
-
Not Synced
And in a sense, it is -
-
Not Synced
you can say that
learning to live together,
-
Not Synced
learning to get along is also the fruit
of the practice.
-
Not Synced
Thay has said, brotherhood, sisterhood,
there is no religion
-
Not Synced
that is higher than that.
-
Not Synced
So we are generating
brotherhood and sisterhood.
-
Not Synced
We are going in that spirit.
-
Not Synced
There was a Harvard study
-
Not Synced
done, it was one of the longest ever
studies, 75 years.
-
Not Synced
It is still going on, I think.
-
Not Synced
And they interview
and get also self-information
-
Not Synced
from standardised groups of men
in the States.
-
Not Synced
Essentially the point is that
-
Not Synced
they were looking to see
what are the conditions
-
Not Synced
for happiness and health
-
Not Synced
looking right through the life.
-
Not Synced
And what they found was
if you want to know
-
Not Synced
what makes a happy octogenarian,
that means, if you are 80 years or over,
-
Not Synced
because these groups they've been
following since they were boys,
-
Not Synced
and now they are in their 80's.
-
Not Synced
You look back when they are 50 years old,
which is my age,
-
Not Synced
you can determine whether
-
Not Synced
the conditions that seem to be common,
-
Not Synced
like the ones that are happy,
the ones that are healthy,
-
Not Synced
the result is only one factor.
-
Not Synced
It is not how much cholesterol
in the blood,
-
Not Synced
it is not many things you might think,
-
Not Synced
but the one factor that comes out
-
Not Synced
is those people report that they have
good relationships.
