Live and Die With No Regrets - Tim Conway

  • 0:01 - 0:13
I want to read a text out of Acts 20:22.
  • 0:13 - 0:19
    Paul, the apostle.
  • 0:19 - 0:28
He was making one last visit with the Ephesian elders,
  • 0:28 - 0:31
as he was on his way to Jerusalem.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
In Acts 20:22 it says this,
  • 0:34 - 0:37
"And now behold, I'm going to Jerusalem.
  • 0:37 - 0:38
    Constrained by the Spirit,
  • 0:38 - 0:41
not knowing what will happen to me there,
  • 0:41 - 0:44
except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city
  • 0:44 - 0:50
that imprisonment and afflictions await me."
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    Now listen to this:
  • 0:52 - 0:59
"But I do not account my life of any value,
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    nor as precious to myself,
  • 1:01 - 1:06
if only I may finish my course
  • 1:06 - 1:10
and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus,
  • 1:10 - 1:13
to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.
  • 1:13 - 1:17
    And now behold,
  • 1:17 - 1:19
I know that none of you
  • 1:19 - 1:23
among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom
  • 1:23 - 1:29
    will see my face again."
  • 1:29 - 1:34
I thought these words were fitting at Richard's funeral.
  • 1:34 - 1:38
    For one, the apostle Paul,
  • 1:38 - 1:45
he's met with some Ephesian elders.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
He had them come down to Miletus.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
He's on a ship. He comes up.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
He doesn't have time to travel
  • 1:55 - 1:59
the 20 or 30 miles or so to Ephesus.
  • 1:59 - 2:02
He probably needs to be on time with the ship.
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    He's headed for Jerusalem.
  • 2:05 - 2:08
He calls these elders from Ephesus,
  • 2:08 - 2:10
which is not too far away,
  • 2:10 - 2:13
    and when they come,
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    he tells them,
  • 2:16 - 2:22
"You're not going to see me again alive in this world."
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    And you know what?
  • 2:24 - 2:27
    I think about those men.
  • 2:27 - 2:31
    They remembered Paul.
  • 2:31 - 2:35
He prayed with them before he left.
  • 2:35 - 2:38
I can imagine them walking back to Ephesus,
  • 2:38 - 2:42
    the 30 miles or so.
  • 2:42 - 2:46
And they talked about Paul and what he had taught.
  • 2:46 - 2:52
They weren't going to see him. They wept.
  • 2:52 - 2:57
And you know, I have a feeling those of you here,
  • 2:57 - 3:01
    you've tried to think,
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    when you heard that Richard
  • 3:03 - 3:05
had gone to be with the Lord,
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    you tried to think,
  • 3:07 - 3:10
"where was the last time I saw him?"
  • 3:10 - 3:13
"Where was the last time I talked with him?"
  • 3:13 - 3:16
Did you all do that? I did that.
  • 3:16 - 3:19
I talked with him at the men's retreat.
  • 3:19 - 3:22
    It was a theological thing
  • 3:22 - 3:25
that I had been toying with in my mind,
  • 3:25 - 3:28
and I said, "Richard, we need to talk about that."
  • 3:28 - 3:32
And he came up and we engaged there.
  • 3:32 - 3:34
And I can remember, too, like some of the men,
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    I looked over
  • 3:36 - 3:41
and I saw Richard leading the music.
  • 3:41 - 3:45
That last night, my truck was parked right next to his,
  • 3:45 - 3:48
and my son and I were sleeping in the back,
  • 3:48 - 3:54
and Richard, I think he stayed up till 4 or 5 in the morning
  • 3:54 - 3:56
playing a game with some of the guys.
  • 3:56 - 4:00
Craig said he heard him laughing at some
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    unbelievable hour.
  • 4:02 - 4:05
And there my son and I are sleeping happily in the back
  • 4:05 - 4:08
of the truck, and sometime around 5 in the morning
  • 4:08 - 4:11
    Richard turns his truck on.
  • 4:11 - 4:14
And the exhaust is right there by the back end of my truck.
  • 4:14 - 4:18
So not only is the thing [running],
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    the fumes are coming in
  • 4:20 - 4:24
and I'm gagging on carbon monoxide.
  • 4:24 - 4:28
    Just trying to remember Richard...
  • 4:28 - 4:33
The last time that I saw him, the last time I spoke.
  • 4:33 - 4:35
I'm sure it was the same with these guys.
  • 4:35 - 4:38
Here's the apostle Paul, he passes through.
  • 4:38 - 4:41
    This is how life is.
  • 4:41 - 4:47
Life here does not last forever.
  • 4:47 - 4:50
And the time we have with people,
  • 4:50 - 4:53
we just don't know when the last time has come.
  • 4:53 - 4:57
Paul had an idea he was not going to see their faces again.
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    The Spirit had indicated that.
  • 4:59 - 5:01
    They had a last time.
  • 5:01 - 5:04
We had a last time with Richard.
  • 5:04 - 5:06
    But life is moving on.
  • 5:06 - 5:08
We can't put the brakes on.
  • 5:08 - 5:10
We can't bring Richard back here.
  • 5:10 - 5:13
They couldn't bring Paul back to Ephesus.
  • 5:13 - 5:17
When he left, he was gone - in this world.
  • 5:17 - 5:20
    And that's how this is.
  • 5:20 - 5:27
Think about how many of us in this room in 50 years,
  • 5:27 - 5:31
a day just like this is going to be somewhere
  • 5:31 - 5:35
in that next 50 years for each one of us.
  • 5:35 - 5:41
At least, those of us that are older.
  • 5:41 - 5:45
And you can start to think,
  • 5:45 - 5:48
    I was thinking about it.
  • 5:48 - 5:52
Oh, if only I had known this was going to be
  • 5:52 - 5:55
the last weekend I got to be with Richard.
  • 5:55 - 5:58
If I could do it over again...
  • 5:58 - 6:01
I think with all of us men that were at the men's retreat,
  • 6:01 - 6:05
knowing what you know now, if you could go back to that third day,
  • 6:05 - 6:06
    how would it be different?
  • 6:06 - 6:08
I know how it would be different.
  • 6:08 - 6:11
There would be a crowd around Richard the whole time.
  • 6:11 - 6:13
And maybe some of us have regrets.
  • 6:13 - 6:15
Maybe some of the men have regrets.
  • 6:15 - 6:20
"I didn't get to talk to him."
  • 6:20 - 6:24
Brethren, we need to live for today.
  • 6:24 - 6:26
We don't want to live with regrets.
  • 6:26 - 6:28
    There's a lot of opportunities - you and I
  • 6:28 - 6:32
are not going to have any more opportunities in this lifetime.
  • 6:32 - 6:36
It's like David said, his wife asked him,
  • 6:36 - 6:39
"Did you ever tell Richard that?"
  • 6:39 - 6:41
    No.
  • 6:41 - 6:45
And maybe there's a number of things we never told Richard,
  • 6:45 - 6:49
that we wish that we would have told him.
  • 6:49 - 6:51
    Missed opportunities.
  • 6:51 - 6:52
    But you know what?
  • 6:52 - 6:56
With death, with the passing of a brother like Richard?
  • 6:56 - 7:00
And maybe with the thought of some failed opportunities,
  • 7:00 - 7:02
we need to think about today,
  • 7:02 - 7:05
and not missing the opportunities now with others,
  • 7:05 - 7:09
because there's a lot of people around us that are still alive.
  • 7:09 - 7:10
And there's a lot of opportunities
  • 7:10 - 7:15
that we don't want to squander with them.
  • 7:15 - 7:18
    The family of Richard's,
  • 7:18 - 7:20
    you don't want to squander
  • 7:20 - 7:23
the words that he said to you.
  • 7:23 - 7:26
You know, I don't know how many of you have ever
  • 7:26 - 7:28
    prayed with Richard.
  • 7:28 - 7:33
I know this, I did pray with Richard.
  • 7:33 - 7:36
Typically, when we all stayed together
  • 7:36 - 7:38
    Richard would not pray.
  • 7:38 - 7:43
But if you got in a group with him, he did pray.
  • 7:43 - 7:44
    And he wept.
  • 7:44 - 7:50
I don't remember Richard ever praying without weeping.
  • 7:50 - 7:56
Our church had all manner of things,
  • 7:56 - 7:59
missionaries and needs in the churches,
  • 7:59 - 8:04
and things happening in the propogation of the Gospel.
  • 8:04 - 8:12
Richard would pray for his family.
  • 8:12 - 8:20
I can see some right here that he wept for.
  • 8:20 - 8:24
We need to live for today. And we need to not squander.
  • 8:24 - 8:27
Notice how Paul lived for today.
  • 8:27 - 8:31
"I do not account my life of any value,
  • 8:31 - 8:32
    nor as precious to myself,
  • 8:32 - 8:35
if only I may finish my course in the ministry
  • 8:35 - 8:37
that I received from the Lord Jesus
  • 8:37 - 8:41
to testify to the gospel of the grace of God."
  • 8:41 - 8:43
I want to tell you about the Apostle Paul.
  • 8:43 - 8:44
I'm not talking about Richard right now,
  • 8:44 - 8:48
I'm talking about the Apostle Paul.
  • 8:48 - 8:49
    He lived for today.
  • 8:49 - 8:52
    A surrendered life.
  • 8:52 - 8:55
    It was surrendered to Christ.
  • 8:55 - 8:56
Here he is with his last meeting with these
  • 8:56 - 8:58
    Ephesian elders in this world.
  • 8:58 - 9:03
What does he have to say to these guys?
  • 9:03 - 9:05
What would you want to say to others
  • 9:05 - 9:08
if you knew it was the last time in this world
  • 9:08 - 9:10
    that you would see them?
  • 9:10 - 9:12
What would Richard have said to those
  • 9:12 - 9:15
at the men's retreat last weekend?
  • 9:15 - 9:17
Or to his family a week ago?
  • 9:17 - 9:20
    What would he have said?
  • 9:20 - 9:22
Paul had that going for him.
  • 9:22 - 9:23
He knew that was the last time.
  • 9:23 - 9:25
We don't know the last time.
  • 9:25 - 9:27
    What would Richard have said?
  • 9:27 - 9:30
Here's what Paul said. Paul could say,
  • 9:30 - 9:35
    "Guys, you know my life.
  • 9:35 - 9:41
And you're not going to see me again.
  • 9:41 - 9:47
My supreme aim is to honor the Lord Jesus Christ."
  • 9:47 - 9:49
He said it this way: "I do not account my life of any value,
  • 9:49 - 9:53
nor precious to myself, if only I may finish my course
  • 9:53 - 9:58
and the ministry that I received."
  • 9:58 - 10:02
He said to these men, you know how I lived among you.
  • 10:02 - 10:04
    I was faithful.
  • 10:04 - 10:09
He said, you yourselves know how I lived among you
  • 10:09 - 10:12
the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia.
  • 10:12 - 10:16
Serving the Lord with all humility, with tears, with trials
  • 10:16 - 10:19
that happened to me through the plots of the Jews,
  • 10:19 - 10:21
how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything
  • 10:21 - 10:23
that was profitable, teaching you in public and from
  • 10:23 - 10:26
house to house, testifying both to Jews and to Greeks
  • 10:26 - 10:28
of repentance toward God and of faith in our
  • 10:28 - 10:30
    Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 10:30 - 10:31
    You know what this is?
  • 10:31 - 10:33
This is a man who can look on his past.
  • 10:33 - 10:35
He can say, you're never going to see me again.
  • 10:35 - 10:37
I'm getting towards the end of my life.
  • 10:37 - 10:39
The Lord has another course for me.
  • 10:39 - 10:41
I'm not going to see your faces again,
  • 10:41 - 10:43
but I can tell you this,
  • 10:43 - 10:46
    I've lived faithful.
  • 10:46 - 10:51
I've lived as one that does not have concern for my own life.
  • 10:51 - 10:53
    I've lived for the Lord.
  • 10:53 - 11:00
    Brethren, friends, family of Richard's,
  • 11:00 - 11:06
you do not want to live with any regrets.
  • 11:06 - 11:10
    Because when the day comes,
  • 11:10 - 11:15
folks, this is you and me soon.
  • 11:15 - 11:18
I don't know if Richard had any regrets.
  • 11:18 - 11:21
    I don't know.
  • 11:21 - 11:23
But we don't want to live with regrets.
  • 11:23 - 11:26
Paul could look these men in the eyes,
  • 11:26 - 11:29
and he could say my life has not been precious to myself.
  • 11:29 - 11:31
I have lived it for Christ,
  • 11:31 - 11:35
and I was faithful among you and you know it.
  • 11:35 - 11:39
And as family and friends, we know a lot about
  • 11:39 - 11:43
    how Richard lived among us.
  • 11:43 - 11:45
    Don't live with regrets.
  • 11:45 - 11:48
If there's anything that death stares us in the face
  • 11:48 - 11:51
and says to each one of us,
  • 11:51 - 11:55
it speaks of our own mortality.
  • 11:55 - 11:57
We are not going to be around forever.
  • 11:57 - 12:01
Death sends a warning to all of us,
  • 12:01 - 12:04
    that life is short.
  • 12:04 - 12:08
    Richard was young.
  • 12:08 - 12:10
    He did not expect this.
  • 12:10 - 12:12
Look, a year ago when he was in the hospital,
  • 12:12 - 12:15
we expected this - his heart stopped several times.
  • 12:15 - 12:17
    But this came suddenly!
  • 12:17 - 12:19
At the men's retreat, he was healthy.
  • 12:19 - 12:22
    He led the singing!
  • 12:22 - 12:24
    He did not expect this.
  • 12:24 - 12:27
    And you don't expect this.
  • 12:27 - 12:31
We don't expect it. We don't want to live with regrets.
  • 12:31 - 12:36
Paul was not ashamed to show his past to others.
  • 12:36 - 12:37
And what did that life look like?
  • 12:37 - 12:40
    It was a surrendered life.
  • 12:40 - 12:42
It was a reality. He could show it to others.
  • 12:42 - 12:48
Paul was in no way ashamed to talk to others about his past
  • 12:48 - 12:51
in the presence of these men who knew him well.
  • 12:51 - 12:53
What a glorious thing it is to be able to
  • 12:53 - 12:55
    examine our lives,
  • 12:55 - 12:58
and to be able to not have regrets.
  • 12:58 - 13:00
    To get to that end.
  • 13:00 - 13:02
Whether you die suddenly like Richard,
  • 13:02 - 13:04
or whether you lay on a deathbed,
  • 13:04 - 13:05
where you can look over your life and say,
  • 13:05 - 13:09
    no, it wasn't perfect,
  • 13:09 - 13:13
but I lived my life for Christ.
  • 13:13 - 13:16
    I lived trusting Him.
  • 13:16 - 13:17
    I lived for Him.
  • 13:17 - 13:19
Look, Paul's calling was as an apostle.
  • 13:19 - 13:21
    It was as a missionary.
  • 13:21 - 13:22
    That's not our calling.
  • 13:22 - 13:25
He desired to live his life for Christ,
  • 13:25 - 13:27
    to finish his course,
  • 13:27 - 13:30
to live out the ministry that Christ called him to.
  • 13:30 - 13:32
    His ministry is not ours.
  • 13:32 - 13:34
Richard had a different calling in life.
  • 13:34 - 13:36
It wasn't the calling of an apostle.
  • 13:36 - 13:39
It was the calling of Richard.
  • 13:39 - 13:42
He had a part to play.
  • 13:42 - 13:43
    He had people to encourage.
  • 13:43 - 13:45
He had people to speak to,
  • 13:45 - 13:48
people to be an example to.
  • 13:48 - 13:51
    We need to live faithful.
  • 13:51 - 13:54
We need to live for Christ.
  • 13:54 - 13:56
Oh, to be able to say as Paul does,
  • 13:56 - 13:58
I've served the Lord with all humility.
  • 13:58 - 14:00
To be able to say that I didn't shrink back
  • 14:00 - 14:02
from doing what the Lord called me to do.
  • 14:02 - 14:05
    He didn't serve for money,
  • 14:05 - 14:09
he tells them in verses 33-34.
  • 14:09 - 14:13
Listen, we've got to move forward.
  • 14:13 - 14:17
We all have to move forward.
  • 14:17 - 14:18
    And you know what?
  • 14:18 - 14:24
For the Christians here, there is a hole left.
  • 14:24 - 14:28
    When soldiers of the cross
  • 14:28 - 14:32
    are taken by our Lord,
  • 14:32 - 14:35
somebody's got to fill their place.
  • 14:35 - 14:38
    We go on. Onward.
  • 14:38 - 14:41
Death looks at us. We need to be faithful.
  • 14:41 - 14:42
    We need to press on.
  • 14:42 - 14:44
    We need to press forward.
  • 14:44 - 14:47
    Nothing could turn Paul back.
  • 14:47 - 14:48
    That needs to be us.
  • 14:48 - 14:50
    We go forward.
  • 14:50 - 14:53
Listen, we are going to encounter a lot of death.
  • 14:53 - 14:56
Many of us before we get to the end.
  • 14:56 - 14:59
Funerals are a part of this world.
  • 14:59 - 15:03
But we press towards the prize of the high calling.
  • 15:03 - 15:05
    We press towards eternity.
  • 15:05 - 15:10
    We press towards eternal life,
  • 15:10 - 15:13
where every tear is wiped away and where there is no more death.
  • 15:13 - 15:15
    We press forward.
  • 15:15 - 15:18
And there is this faithful group of witnesses
  • 15:18 - 15:20
    that have gone before us,
  • 15:20 - 15:21
    and they bid us on.
  • 15:21 - 15:24
Come, with our eyes upon Christ.
  • 15:24 - 15:26
    Press forward in this race.
  • 15:26 - 15:27
    Press on.
  • 15:27 - 15:30
Paul - he says I live for Christ.
  • 15:30 - 15:34
I did not count my life dear to myself.
  • 15:34 - 15:38
    Can we say that?
  • 15:38 - 15:43
Are you living your life for yourself?
  • 15:43 - 15:45
Jesus calls us to follow Him.
  • 15:45 - 15:49
    Jesus says, "Come unto Me."
  • 15:49 - 15:51
    He says, "Come to Me."
  • 15:51 - 15:53
And He says, "Learn of Me."
  • 15:53 - 15:55
And He tells you to trust Him.
  • 15:55 - 15:59
And He tells you to follow Him.
  • 15:59 - 16:01
You need to look to His cross,
  • 16:01 - 16:05
and live in the power of what was done there.
  • 16:05 - 16:08
    That is our only hope.
  • 16:08 - 16:10
    Living for Christ.
  • 16:10 - 16:13
Oh, to be able to have the testimony of Paul.
  • 16:13 - 16:18
To be able to say what he said.
  • 16:18 - 16:22
    This is reality.
  • 16:22 - 16:24
    Death is reality.
  • 16:24 - 16:26
And it's appointed unto every one of us
  • 16:26 - 16:30
once to die, and then the judgement.
  • 16:30 - 16:35
And we are moving so quickly, speedily,
  • 16:35 - 16:40
    towards that moment
  • 16:40 - 16:44
    when we enter eternity.
  • 16:44 - 16:47
When we stand before the Lord.
  • 16:47 - 16:52
Paul is saying, look, here all for Christ,
  • 16:52 - 16:54
    all for Christ.
  • 16:54 - 16:56
Forgetting those things that are behind
  • 16:56 - 16:58
and reaching, stretching towards that which was before
  • 16:58 - 17:00
    and pressing towards the prize
  • 17:00 - 17:02
of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
  • 17:02 - 17:05
I'll tell you this, you can't scare a man with death,
  • 17:05 - 17:07
who's living a life like this.
  • 17:07 - 17:09
You know what Paul would say?
  • 17:09 - 17:13
Why do you weep like this?
  • 17:13 - 17:17
I am willing to not only go to prison but to die,
  • 17:17 - 17:21
if only I might finish my course well.
  • 17:21 - 17:23
I want to live for Christ.
  • 17:23 - 17:25
    I want to proclaim Christ.
  • 17:25 - 17:32
    He is my all.
  • 17:32 - 17:35
He declared that he did not count his life his own.
  • 17:35 - 17:40
To him, to live was Christ.
  • 17:40 - 17:46
    Church of God, this happens...
  • 17:46 - 17:50
It happened with Ila; undoubtedly with Johnny,
  • 17:50 - 17:56
though my mind is not remembering that so well.
  • 17:56 - 18:00
But with the death of our brother Richard,
  • 18:00 - 18:03
it makes me think of eternity.
  • 18:03 - 18:04
It makes me think of life.
  • 18:04 - 18:12
It makes me think of the brevity of life.
  • 18:12 - 18:15
It's quickly moving by, and what are we living for?
  • 18:15 - 18:17
Listen, to live for this world, to live for the toys
  • 18:17 - 18:20
and the trivialities of this world, what are those things?
  • 18:20 - 18:24
    They don't satisfy the soul.
  • 18:24 - 18:26
Vess is talking about looking over at Richard
  • 18:26 - 18:31
and seeing Richard welling up with tears and affection
  • 18:31 - 18:33
over what Christ did on the cross.
  • 18:33 - 18:36
Oh, to be moved by what Christ has done.
  • 18:36 - 18:38
To be moved by the Person of Christ.
  • 18:38 - 18:41
And to live for Him, and to be consumed with Him,
  • 18:41 - 18:43
all for Christ, and to live
  • 18:43 - 18:45
as though your life is not precious to you.
  • 18:45 - 18:47
What did Paul mean by that?
  • 18:47 - 18:48
My life is not precious to me.
  • 18:48 - 18:49
    What does that mean?
  • 18:49 - 18:51
    It means it's not mine.
  • 18:51 - 18:52
    I'm living for Another.
  • 18:52 - 18:54
And if He would have me lay it down for Him,
  • 18:54 - 18:57
Christ is precious over my life.
  • 18:57 - 18:59
And that is what Christ called us to.
  • 18:59 - 19:03
    He called us to die.
  • 19:03 - 19:07
And to carry our cross and to follow Him.
  • 19:07 - 19:10
    But Paul, what about hardship?
  • 19:10 - 19:11
What about the possibility of death?
  • 19:11 - 19:14
What is that to a man whose life is not his own?
  • 19:14 - 19:18
If that's what Christ calls me to, then so be it.
  • 19:18 - 19:25
Church, we need to press on,
  • 19:25 - 19:27
    clinging to Christ.
  • 19:27 - 19:30
    Let us run without regret.
  • 19:30 - 19:34
The day's coming when it's all done.
  • 19:34 - 19:35
    It's all written.
  • 19:35 - 19:42
The last chapter on Brother Richard's life in this world.
  • 19:42 - 19:45
    The period is there.
  • 19:45 - 19:47
    It's done.
  • 19:47 - 19:50
    His story is done.
  • 19:50 - 19:54
    And it can't be changed.
  • 19:54 - 19:59
And oh, to be able to say like Paul,
  • 19:59 - 20:02
you guys know that with all humility
  • 20:02 - 20:06
    I ran well before you.
  • 20:06 - 20:08
    What you do you want?
  • 20:08 - 20:13
Not what do you want said at your funeral?
  • 20:13 - 20:17
Not what do you want inscribed on your tombstone?
  • 20:17 - 20:25
What do you truly want the Lord to say in that day?
  • 20:25 - 20:28
I want, "Well done, good and faithful servant."
  • 20:28 - 20:32
Brothers and sisters, if that's what we long for,
  • 20:32 - 20:36
then let us live the life that will meet
  • 20:36 - 20:40
    Christ's approval in that day.
  • 20:40 - 20:43
    Think with me brethren.
  • 20:43 - 20:45
    Live your lives well.
  • 20:45 - 20:48
    Spend them well.
  • 20:48 - 20:52
Let Richard's death be a reminder to all of us
  • 20:52 - 20:54
    of our own mortality.
  • 20:54 - 20:59
Live well while you have life.
  • 20:59 - 21:04
    Live well.
  • 21:04 - 21:07
A converted Hindu was persecuted bitterly
  • 21:07 - 21:09
    for accepting Christ.
  • 21:09 - 21:12
His relatives seemed filled with deadly hate
  • 21:12 - 21:16
against him for forsaking the religion of his ancestors.
  • 21:16 - 21:19
They did what they could to force him to deny Christ.
  • 21:19 - 21:21
    Some sympathetic friends asked him
  • 21:21 - 21:26
how it was possible for him to bear so much trouble.
  • 21:26 - 21:30
He replied, "Ask me rather, how it's possible
  • 21:30 - 21:33
for me to bear all the joy that I have
  • 21:33 - 21:37
in the service and fellowship of Christ!"
  • 21:37 - 21:41
That was the very same thing that was true of Paul.
  • 21:41 - 21:43
He never thought of confronting danger and prison as
  • 21:43 - 21:45
causing him to have to finish his course with sorrow.
  • 21:45 - 21:47
It was all joy to him.
  • 21:47 - 21:50
    Joy.
  • 21:50 - 21:56
Oh, to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.
  • 21:56 - 21:59
    Living in the joy.
  • 21:59 - 22:07
Another voice in our brother Richard silenced for Christ.
  • 22:07 - 22:15
One more Christian removed off the scene of this world.
  • 22:15 - 22:19
    Richard served.
  • 22:19 - 22:22
    I could depend on Richard.
  • 22:22 - 22:26
I know he had some health issues.
  • 22:26 - 22:32
I could depend on him to be there early, all the time.
  • 22:32 - 22:34
    I could depend on him
  • 22:34 - 22:39
to be in that seat behind that little table,
  • 22:39 - 22:42
whether it was here or it was over at the restaurant,
  • 22:42 - 22:44
I could depend upon him to be there.
  • 22:44 - 22:46
    He was faithful.
  • 22:46 - 22:50
I guarantee, he was animated in the preaching.
  • 22:50 - 22:52
    He never slept.
  • 22:52 - 22:57
I knew if there was going to be one attentive listener,
  • 22:57 - 22:59
    he was going to be.
  • 22:59 - 23:01
He was going to be there and he was going to be faithful
  • 23:01 - 23:04
to handle that computer and handle that projector.
  • 23:04 - 23:09
I knew that if somebody came in off the streets
  • 23:09 - 23:12
    that looked shady,
  • 23:12 - 23:15
that he thought would be a threat
  • 23:15 - 23:19
to our women or children, he watched them.
  • 23:19 - 23:21
There were a lot of things
  • 23:21 - 23:24
that I just could depend on Richard for.
  • 23:24 - 23:28
I could depend on him to sing in tune.
  • 23:28 - 23:31
I could depend on him to sing well.
  • 23:31 - 23:37
I could depend on him in a lot of ways.
  • 23:37 - 23:41
    And he's gone.
  • 23:41 - 23:47
And we need God's people to rise up
  • 23:47 - 23:49
and fill the place and to be faithful.
  • 23:49 - 23:53
And I just end with this:
  • 23:53 - 23:58
"When I was in college," said Henry Hey,
  • 23:58 - 24:00
"a couple of men were sent out to West Africa
  • 24:00 - 24:02
    to fill a vacancy.
  • 24:02 - 24:05
And before they had gone three months,
  • 24:05 - 24:11
there came a cable telling us that one was dead.
  • 24:11 - 24:15
In less than another month, a second cable came,
  • 24:15 - 24:18
telling us that the second was dead.
  • 24:18 - 24:22
At once, that matter was announced to the students
  • 24:22 - 24:25
of our college, and the question was asked,
  • 24:25 - 24:28
    'who would take their places?' where two had gone and died;
  • 24:28 - 24:32
six men at once stood forth and offered to go in their places,
  • 24:32 - 24:34
    and two men were sent.
  • 24:34 - 24:37
In less than six months, these two men were dead.
  • 24:37 - 24:41
And a cable came again, and the question was asked,
  • 24:41 - 24:43
    'who will go?'
  • 24:43 - 24:47
On that occasion, I shall never forget it,
  • 24:47 - 24:51
it stands out as one of the thrilling moments of my life.
  • 24:51 - 24:54
When the announcement was made at the college table
  • 24:54 - 24:57
and the question was asked, 'who will go?'
  • 24:57 - 25:02
Every man in that college stood up
  • 25:02 - 25:06
    and said, 'send me.'"
  • 25:06 - 25:10
    Richard's gone.
  • 25:10 - 25:14
And we need to stand forth,
  • 25:14 - 25:15
and we need to press on,
  • 25:15 - 25:18
and we need to walk in footsteps of those
  • 25:18 - 25:19
    faithful who have gone before.
  • 25:19 - 25:21
We need to fill the spot, fill the gaps,
  • 25:21 - 25:24
    take up the responsibility.
  • 25:24 - 25:26
    Christian soldiers, arise.
  • 25:26 - 25:29
    We are not yet done.
  • 25:29 - 25:31
Our battle is still at hand.
  • 25:31 - 25:34
Our journey is still before us.
  • 25:34 - 25:37
    Our rest is not yet.
  • 25:37 - 25:40
We have not fallen into the arms of Christ
  • 25:40 - 25:41
    as our brother has.
  • 25:41 - 25:43
    Our time is not yet.
  • 25:43 - 25:49
The time for us to gird our loins with that sword
  • 25:49 - 25:52
and go forth into battle is still at hand.
  • 25:52 - 25:55
    Brethren, arise.
  • 25:55 - 26:00
Let the life of our brother be an inspiration to us
  • 26:00 - 26:02
    to press on.
  • 26:02 - 26:06
To not waste your time, waste your days, waste your hours.
  • 26:06 - 26:07
    Onward for Christ.
  • 26:07 - 26:09
    Sold out to Christ.
  • 26:09 - 26:11
    Hungry for Christ.
  • 26:11 - 26:13
Onward in the name of Christ.
  • 26:13 - 26:15
    Be faithful to Christ.
  • 26:15 - 26:18
So that when you get there, there are no regrets.
  • 26:18 - 26:22
    Brethren, no regrets!
  • 26:22 - 26:26
Death is real and death is coming.
  • 26:26 - 26:28
And as the song says, hell is coming.
  • 26:28 - 26:30
    And hell is real.
  • 26:30 - 26:32
And those here who know not Christ,
  • 26:32 - 26:34
    or play games at religion,
  • 26:34 - 26:38
hell is real and you will find out its reality soon
  • 26:38 - 26:41
if you do not cling to Christ in faith.
  • 26:41 - 26:43
    He bids you, "Come."
  • 26:43 - 26:48
And Richard, I know, most of you are here for the funeral
  • 26:48 - 26:50
    because you knew him.
  • 26:50 - 26:53
And those of you that he knew
  • 26:53 - 26:55
    who did not know Christ,
  • 26:55 - 26:58
he pleaded with you and he spoke truth to you.
  • 26:58 - 27:01
Let his words not fall on deaf ears.
  • 27:01 - 27:03
What he told you about is the greatest news
  • 27:03 - 27:07
    in all this world,
  • 27:07 - 27:09
    that there is salvation.
  • 27:09 - 27:13
    The worst, darkest stained sinner
  • 27:13 - 27:17
can be set free and washed clean -
  • 27:17 - 27:19
cleaner than the new fallen snow
  • 27:19 - 27:22
by the blood of Jesus Christ.
  • 27:22 - 27:25
    By faith alone.
  • 27:25 - 27:28
Calling on the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 27:28 - 27:34
He said, "None that come to Me will be cast out."
  • 27:34 - 27:37
You say but you don't know the things I've done.
  • 27:37 - 27:39
    He does.
  • 27:39 - 27:41
And He came for the sick.
  • 27:41 - 27:43
    He came for sinners.
  • 27:43 - 27:46
And He saves them to the uttermost.
  • 27:46 - 27:48
And if all of this sounds foreign to you,
  • 27:48 - 27:50
and you can't relate to all this,
  • 27:50 - 27:53
we call you, join the army of Christ.
  • 27:53 - 27:58
And the way in is not the way into the army in the United States.
  • 27:58 - 28:06
The way in is to come as a guilty sinner,
  • 28:06 - 28:08
and look to Christ to be saved,
  • 28:08 - 28:10
    and to Him alone,
  • 28:10 - 28:12
trusting in none of your own abilities,
  • 28:12 - 28:15
    and merits and anything else.
  • 28:15 - 28:19
    But Christ, Christ only.
  • 28:19 - 28:21
Oh, Christ, there is nothing sweeter.
  • 28:21 - 28:25
Our brother would cry and weep tears
  • 28:25 - 28:27
because of the beauty of Christ.
  • 28:27 - 28:29
    There's nothing more beautiful.
  • 28:29 - 28:32
There's nothing more worthy to live for,
  • 28:32 - 28:34
than to pour out your life for Christ.
  • 28:34 - 28:40
God help us to be as the Apostle Paul.
  • 28:40 - 28:43
    No regrets.
  • 28:43 - 28:48
    A life surrendered to Christ.
  • 28:48 - 28:50
    I leave you with that.
  • 28:50 - 28:55
Live for Christ with no regrets.
  • 28:55 - 28:58
    No regrets.
  • 28:58 - 29:02
    All for Christ.
  • 29:02 - 29:05
Father, we thank You for the time together tonight.
  • 29:05 - 29:09
We thank You for the remembrance You've given to us.
