IOOW Part 1

  • Not Synced
  • Not Synced
My name is Kiran, I am the chair of In Our Own words and a health psychologist by background.
  • Not Synced
And I am Rachel and I have recently come on board with In Our Own words and I am newly qualified as a clinical psychologist.
  • Not Synced
It’s nice to meet you all by the way.
  • Not Synced
So just to explain what In Our Own Words
  • Not Synced
is. It is a wiki essentially, to
  • Not Synced
build up a knowledge resource around distress
  • Not Synced
suffering, pain fatigue, those kind of
  • Not Synced
    symptoms or experiences people might
  • Not Synced
    struggle with from ethnic minorities
  • Not Synced
as they may describe them in everyday
  • Not Synced
    terms.
  • Not Synced
So moving away from clinical disorders
  • Not Synced
and moving away from looking at the
  • Not Synced
    Western equivalents of anxiety and
  • Not Synced
depression, but really looking at how
  • Not Synced
people describe it in an everyday sense
  • Not Synced
in order to try and help people to get
  • Not Synced
earlier access to support access to
  • Not Synced
support when they need it from
  • Not Synced
psychological services. And as part of
  • Not Synced
that we are building a resource section
  • Not Synced
    for different communities under different
  • Not Synced
languages where we link to papers- sorry,
  • Not Synced
    not papers-research done by different
  • Not Synced
    researchers, you know, trainee
  • Not Synced
    psychologists, early career psychologists,
  • Not Synced
with ethnic minorities, you know, around
  • Not Synced
some of their sense-making when they have
  • Not Synced
    mental and physical health difficulties,
  • Not Synced
particularly work that might not have been
  • Not Synced
    published before.
  • Not Synced
This is often called a preprint
  • Not Synced
    That's it, yeah
  • Not Synced
Erm, and when I was possibly thinking
  • Not Synced
about publishing my thesis, so yeah it's
  • Not Synced
basically a term in academic which is like
  • Not Synced
a version of your scientific paper which
  • Not Synced
precedes a formal peer review and actually
  • Not Synced
    it doesn't, a formal peer review doesn't
  • Not Synced
have to follow on. And you can just, if
  • Not Synced
you have kind of completed a dissertation
  • Not Synced
or or a piece of work, or a even a service
  • Not Synced
evaluation for example, and you can-
  • Not Synced
there's a number of places you can upload-
  • Not Synced
upload them. Yeah and you, and you make
  • Not Synced
    the pre-print available, how it's
  • Not Synced
described [the process]. People can view
  • Not Synced
that, it's searchable, people can download
  • Not Synced
it. And yeah, others go on to publish it.
  • Not Synced
Yep. And One of the nice things about it
  • Not Synced
is you can actually see how many people
  • Not Synced
download your paper and you can create
  • Not Synced
citable links of your research paper from
  • Not Synced
there. Erm so we'll talk a bit about
