November 30 - Giving Up Paradise

  • 0:05 - 0:07
Principe is a magnificent “Lost World”
  • 0:07 - 0:11
    with untouched beaches,
    greener-than-green forests,
  • 0:11 - 0:14
and a small yet welcoming population.
  • 0:14 - 0:17
This is truly an ecological sanctuary
    for the handful of tourists
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    who visit this remote island
    in Sao Tome and Principe.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    There are many activities here
for guests and locals to enjoy:
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    relaxing beaches, jungle exploration,
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    snorkeling, fishing, birdwatching,
  • 0:30 - 0:31
    and other fun adventures.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    Surprisingly, Adventist youth in Principe
  • 0:34 - 0:37
decided to skip their summer vacation
    in paradise.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    Instead, they gave their time
    to serve people
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    in a difficult-to-access region
    of the island.
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    This group is Mission Caleb.
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    They went to Vila Belavista,
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    the village selected
    for their summer project.
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    There are no paved roads
  • 0:50 - 0:53
    and the team traveled carefully
    through treacherous terrain.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
Inspired by Caleb’s courage in the Bible,
  • 0:56 - 1:00
    these young men and women
desire to have that same fearless spirit,
  • 1:00 - 1:02
so they call themselves the Calebs.
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    When the Calebs
    first surveyed the community,
  • 1:05 - 1:06
they found many people in need.
  • 1:07 - 1:10
So the young men began working
to clear access to people’s houses.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
The young women did house chores
    and cleaned up the walkways.
  • 1:21 - 1:25
The group also visited the sick,
    bringing hope and food supplies.
  • 1:25 - 1:26
    In this remote area,
  • 1:26 - 1:29
    some villagers struggle
    to survive on their own.
  • 1:36 - 1:40
    The Calebs’ unselfish acts
    of service, kindness, and compassion
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    demonstrated their Christlike love.
  • 1:43 - 1:46
    Soon they captured
    the villagers’ attention
  • 1:46 - 1:47
and people began to open up.
  • 1:49 - 1:52
I thought there was no solution
    for me anymore.
  • 1:53 - 1:57
    After I lost my son,
    I thought I should die.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    When the Calebs came over,
  • 2:00 - 2:03
the pastor invited us to go to church.
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    So, we accepted Jesus here
  • 2:07 - 2:10
and then went to the church in the city.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    Then we got baptized.
  • 2:13 - 2:17
The Calebs could not have imagined
how God would bless their efforts.
  • 2:17 - 2:20
By giving up their summer in paradise,
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    God was able
to reach the people of Vila Belavista.
  • 2:23 - 2:26
    Villagers asked questions
    and requested Bible studies.
  • 2:26 - 2:29
    Others attended the special meetings
    hosted in the village.
  • 2:29 - 2:33
    Today, the main congregation
plans to build a new church in this village
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    because many have accepted Jesus.
  • 2:35 - 2:39
    Caleb, I am.
    Mission Caleb, I will go.
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    Each summer,
  • 2:41 - 2:44
    thousands of Mission Caleb youth
    accept the challenge
  • 2:44 - 2:47
    to show compassion
and creatively serve all over the world.
  • 2:48 - 2:49
    Many times,
  • 2:49 - 2:52
the goal is to establish new groups
    of believers in unentered areas.
  • 2:53 - 2:56
    God is using young people
    in Sao Tome and Principe
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    and all over the world.
  • 2:58 - 2:59
    How can He use you?
