  • 0:06 - 0:08
    [Music]
  • 0:18 - 0:20
Sixty percent of people with disabilities
  • 0:20 - 0:23
    lives in towns and cities
    throughout Asia and the Pacific
  • 0:23 - 0:27
yet here in Hanoi I stand out
  • 0:27 - 0:28
and it's because you just don't see
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    people with disabilities
  • 0:30 - 0:31
as part of day to day life.
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    [music]
  • 0:46 - 0:47
So what role do broadcasters and producers
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    like me play?
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    [music]
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    The Asian Broadcasting Union.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
It's one of the largest most powerful
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    organisations in public service television.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    [music]
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    It's great that the 700
    delegates at this conference
  • 1:11 - 1:12
are eager to find a way
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    that they might be able
to play a role in changing
  • 1:14 - 1:17
    attitudes in their community.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    [music]
  • 1:24 - 1:27
What is it like for people with disabilities
    where you come from
  • 1:27 - 1:29
in terms of are they seen on TV?
  • 1:29 - 1:33
[Woman] An honest answer? Not much.
  • 1:33 - 1:35
I wish there would be more, but they're not
  • 1:35 - 1:37
and I think we are at fault
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    the media is at fault
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    and partly I think there
is a hesitancy on their part
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    as well to be exposed.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
We're the people who actually dispel
  • 1:47 - 1:49
a whole lot of myths, you know
  • 1:49 - 1:51
we're the people who tell people
  • 1:51 - 1:53
I think that's what media does
  • 1:53 - 1:55
it tries to bridge a lot of gaps
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    and bring people closer.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
So I feel that media has a huge role
  • 1:59 - 2:02
not just to enable disabled people
  • 2:02 - 2:04
but in a whole lot of areas
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    empowering people especially.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
What I'm taking away from this is
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    it's not just enough
    for people with disabilites
  • 2:10 - 2:12
to catch up in the media
  • 2:12 - 2:13
    we need to lead.
  • 2:13 - 2:15
    By combining traditional broadcast
    with new technology
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    we've got an opportunity
to create more traffic than ever
  • 2:18 - 2:22
and raise the awareness of people with disabilites.
  • 2:22 - 2:24
The fact that we're entering a new era,
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    that provides a great opportunity.
  • 2:28 - 2:29
