What happens when the whole world votes? | Simon Anholt | TEDxFrankfurt

  • Not Synced
As many of you know, the results of
the recent election were as follows:
  • Not Synced
    Hillary Clinton, democratic candidate
    went allowance ??? victory
  • Not Synced
with 52% of the overall vote.
  • Not Synced
    Jill Stein, the green candidate,
came a distant second with 19%.
  • Not Synced
Donald J. Trump, the Republican Candidate
was caught on the hills with 14%.
  • Not Synced
And the major of the vote was shared between abstainers and Gary Jonhson ???
  • Not Synced
    the libertarian candidate.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter in the audience)
  • Not Synced
What parallel Universe do you suppose I'm leaving ?
  • Not Synced
Well, I don't live in a parallel Universe, I live in the world.
  • Not Synced
And that, is outer world verdict.
  • Not Synced
Let me take you back and let me explain what I wean with that.
  • Not Synced
In June this year, I learned something called "The Global Vote".
  • Not Synced
And the Global Vote, does exactly what he says on the teen ???
  • Not Synced
The first time in Hystory, elects anybody, anywhere in the world,
  • Not Synced
vote in the elections of others people's countries.
  • Not Synced
    Why would you do that?
  • Not Synced
    What's the point?
  • Not Synced
Let me show you what it looks like.
  • Not Synced
You go on a website, rather beautiful website, and then you select an election
  • Not Synced
    here's the bunches ?? we've already covered,
  • Not Synced
We do about it one a month or there about it if you consider the ''' of the United States of America
  • Not Synced
Secretary General of the United Nations, The Brexit Referendum at the end of ???
  • Not Synced
You select the election you're interested in and you pick the candidate
  • Not Synced
These are the candidates for the recent elections in the tiny ??? Sautomia in Principe
  • Not Synced
under hundred of thousand inhabitants, off the coast of West Africa.
  • Not Synced
And you can look at the brief summary of each of those Candidates which I dearly hope
  • Not Synced
it's very neutral, very informative and very succinct.
  • Not Synced
And when you find the one you like, you vote.
  • Not Synced
These are the Candidates in the recent Islandic election. And That's the way it goes.
  • Not Synced
Why not would you do want to vote in another country's election?
  • Not Synced
The reason you wouldn't want to do it, let me reassure you is in order to interfere
  • Not Synced
in the democratic process of another country.
  • Not Synced
That's not the purpose at all.
  • Not Synced
Infact, you can't because usually what I do is a re??? of results after
  • Not Synced
the election in each individual country has already voted, so there's not way we can interfere in that process.
  • Not Synced
But more importantly, I'm not particularly interested in the domestic issues of the individual countries,
  • Not Synced
that's not what we are voting on.
  • Not Synced
What Donald J. Trump and Hillary Clinton propose to do for the American
  • Not Synced
is frankly non of our business.
  • Not Synced
That's something that only American can vote on.
  • Not Synced
Now, in the Global Vote you are considering only one aspect of it
  • Not Synced
which is: what of those leaders are going to do for the rest of us?
  • Not Synced
And that's very important, because we live, as lot of ????? people tell you,
  • Not Synced
in a globalized, hyperconnected, massively interdependent world,
  • Not Synced
where the politicol decisions of people of another countries can unwill have an impact on our lives
  • Not Synced
no matter who we are, no matter where we live.
  • Not Synced
like the wings of the butterfly, beating on one side of the Pacific,
  • Not Synced
that can apparently create an hurricane on the other side. So it is with the world we are living today.
  • Not Synced
    And the world of politics.
  • Not Synced
There's no longer divided lines between domestic and international effect.
  • Not Synced
Any country, no matter how small, even if it's Sautoma in Principe,
  • Not Synced
could produce the next Nelson Mandela, or the next Stalin.
  • Not Synced
They coul pollute the atmosphere in the oceans which belongs to all of us.
  • Not Synced
Or they could be responsible and they can help all of us.
  • Not Synced
And yet, the system is so strange because the system hasn't caught ??? up with the globalized reality.
  • Not Synced
Only a small number of people are allowed to vote for those leaders, even though their impact is gigantic
  • Not Synced
    and almost universal.
  • Not Synced
What number was it? A hundred and forty million of Americans voted for the next President of The United State
  • Not Synced
and yet, as all of us know, in a few weeks time, somebody ios going ???
  • Not Synced
over the nuclear launch code to Donald J. Trump.
  • Not Synced
Now if it isn't having a potential impact on all of us, I don't know what it is.
  • Not Synced
Similarly, the election for the Referendum - the Brexit Vote
  • Not Synced
was a small numbers of British people voted on that
  • Not Synced
but the outcome of the vote, which every way I wend????? would have a significant impact
  • Not Synced
on the lives of ten hundreds of millions people around the world.
  • Not Synced
and the ????? number could vote
  • Not Synced
What kind of democracy is that?
  • Not Synced
Huge decisions that affects all of us being decided by relatively very small numbers of people
  • Not Synced
and I don't know about you, but I don't think that sounds very democratic.
  • Not Synced
So I'm trying to clear it up.
  • Not Synced
But as I say, we don't ask about domestic questions. Infact, I only have asked two questions of all of the candidates.
  • Not Synced
I send the same two questions every single time. I say:
  • Not Synced
    1. If you got elected, what are you going to do for the rest of us?
  • Not Synced
For the reminder of the 7 billion who live in this planet?
  • Not Synced
    2. What is your vision for your country's future in the world?
  • Not Synced
What role do you see it will play?
  • Not Synced
Every candidate, I send the same questions and I ?????
  • Not Synced
don't get me wrong, I re???? if you're standing to become the next President of the United States
  • Not Synced
probably pretty tied ??? most of the time,
  • Not Synced
so I'm not get together surprised that I'm ???? but many do.
  • Not Synced
More every ntime. And somebody do much more than answer.
  • Not Synced
Some of the most, in the most enthusiastic and ???? you could imagine,
  • Not Synced
I just wanna say what if ????chiChimba, which was one of the candidate in the recent Zambia Presidential elections
  • Not Synced
His answers to those two questions were basically an 18 pages dissertation
  • Not Synced
on his view of Zambia potential role in the world, and in the international Community.
  • Not Synced
I posted on the website so anyone could read it.
  • Not Synced
Now sa??? onte the global vote, but he didnt't win the Zambia election
  • Not Synced
So I found myself wondering, what am I going to do if this extraordianry group of people,
  • Not Synced
I found some wonderful people here who want the global vote
  • Not Synced
we always ???? are getting wrong, by the way.
  • Not Synced
The one we elect is never the one that is elected by the domestic electorate.
  • Not Synced
Maybe Palin because we wento see to go for the vote for women
  • Not Synced
But I think it may also be a sign that the domestic electors still think very nationally
  • Not Synced
    they're still thinking very inwardly,
  • Not Synced
they're still asking themselves: what's in it for me? instead what they should be asking today, which is:
  • Not Synced
    What's in it for we?
  • Not Synced
But then you go , so suggestions plesa, not right now but send me an e-mail
  • Not Synced
if you got an idea about we can do with this amazing team of glorious losers????
  • Not Synced
We've gor save ???? before we should up at Thomas Tortier who was rinning
  • Not Synced
in the Ilandic Presidential elections, many of you may have seen her
  • Not Synced
in an amazing talk at TDE women just few weeks ago,
  • Not Synced
when she spoke for need for women to get into politics.
  • Not Synced
We have Maria S??? from Sautomia in Principe
  • Not Synced
we got Hillary Clinton, she's available
  • Not Synced
We got Jill Stein, and we aught also the elections of the nextg Secretary of the United Nations
  • Not Synced
and we called the next Prime Minister of the New Zeeland
  • Not Synced
a wonderful member of the team
  • Not Synced
I think maybe those people the ????? traveled around the world whatever there's an election
  • Not Synced
and remind people of the necessity in our modern age, of thinking a little bit outwards
  • Not Synced
and thinking of the international consequences
  • Not Synced
What comes next to the global vote? Obviously the Donald and Hillary show
  • Not Synced
is a difficult one to follow but there's anothere ???election coming up
  • Not Synced
Infact they seemed multuply, there's something going on, I'm sure you've noticed in the world
  • Not Synced
and the next role of elections were terrificly important.
  • Not Synced
And just a few days time we got a ???? the Australian Presidential elections
  • Not Synced
with the prospect of nobody offer.???
  • Not Synced
become finally described as fast ???since the Second Worlds War
  • Not Synced
Next year we got Germany, we got France, we got Presidential election in Iran,
  • Not Synced
    and it doesn't habits
  • Not Synced
It doesn't get less important It gets more and more important.
  • Not Synced
Clearly, the global vote is not a stand alone project.
  • Not Synced
It's not just there on its own.
  • Not Synced
It has some backgrounds. It's part of the project which I've launched back in 2014
  • Not Synced
    which I called "Good Country"
  • Not Synced
The idea of a good country is basically very simple.
  • Not Synced
It's my simple diagnosis of what it's wrong with the world, and how we can fix it.
  • Not Synced
What's wrong with the world I've already went into that.
  • Not Synced
Basically we face an increasingly growing number of challenges
  • Not Synced
gigantic, existencial global challenges - climate change, human rights abuses,
  • Not Synced
mass migration, terrorism, economic caos, weapons proliferation
  • Not Synced
who with these problems is ??? to praise out?
  • Not Synced
About the very mnature of globalized problems we know individual countries
  • Not Synced
as the capability of tackling on it on oits zone
  • Not Synced
And so very obviously, we have to cooperate and we have to collaborate
  • Not Synced
and as nations we're not going to solve these problems
  • Not Synced
    It's so obvious.
  • Not Synced
    And yet we don't-
  • Not Synced
We don't do nearly after enough. Most of the time, countries still persists in behaving
  • Not Synced
as they were worring selfish tribes.
  • Not Synced
Fighting against each other, not as they have that since the nation stayed invented hundred of years ago.
  • Not Synced
And this is got to change. This is not a change in politicol system or a change in ideology
  • Not Synced
this is a change in culture
  • Not Synced
we, all of us, have to understand, that thinking in woods is not the solution to the world's problems
  • Not Synced
we have to learn how to cooperate and how collaborate a great deal know??
  • Not Synced
and compete just a tiny bit less.
  • Not Synced
Otherwise things we are carrying are getting bed, and are going to get much worse
  • Not Synced
    much sooner that we anticipate.
  • Not Synced
this change will only happen if we ordinary people tell our polititians of things to change
  • Not Synced
we have to tell them that the culture is changed.
  • Not Synced
We have to tell them we have a new mandate
  • Not Synced
The old mandate was very simple and very single.
  • Not Synced
If you're in a posistion of power or authority you're responsible for your own people
  • Not Synced
and your slice of theatry, and that's it.
  • Not Synced
And in order to do the best thing for your people, you screw on everybody else on the planet
  • Not Synced
Tha't considered to be a big Macho.
  • Not Synced
Today, everybody in a position of power and responsibility is in the position of a dual mandate
  • Not Synced
which says if youìre in a position of power and responsibility, you're responsible for youir own people
  • Not Synced
and for every single man, woman, child and animal on the planet.
  • Not Synced
You're responsible for your own slice of teatry and for every single square of ???
  • Not Synced
    and the atmosphjere above it
  • Not Synced
and if you don't like that responsibility, you should not bwe in power.
  • Not Synced
That, for me, is the rule of the modern age
  • Not Synced
And that's the message thae we're going to address to our politicians
  • Not Synced
and show them that tha's the way things are mede these days
  • Not Synced
    otherwise, we're all screwed.
  • Not Synced
I don't have a problem actually with Donald Trump ?????? of America first
  • Not Synced
It seems to me that this it's a pretty banale statement of what politicians have always done,
  • Not Synced
    and probably should always do.
  • Not Synced
Of, course, they're elected to represent the interests of their own people
  • Not Synced
but what I find so boring and so old-fashioned,
  • Not Synced
and so unimaginative about his take on that,
  • Not Synced
is that America first means everyone else lose.
  • Not Synced
The making America grat again means making everybody else small again.
  • Not Synced
    And it's just no true.
  • Not Synced
Imagine all the advisor of the last twenty years or so.
  • Not Synced
I've seen so many hundreds of examples of policies that harmonize
  • Not Synced
the international and the domestic needs.
  • Not Synced
And they make better policy. I'm not asking nations to be altruistic
  • Not Synced
or self-sacrificed. That would be ridiculous!
  • Not Synced
No nation would ever do that.
  • Not Synced
I'm asking to wake up and understand that we need a new form pof Government
  • Not Synced
which is possible and which harmonize those two needs
  • Not Synced
and it's good for our own people
  • Not Synced
and those good for everybody else.
  • Not Synced
Since the US elections and since Brexit,
