    These things might all seem
    like important, even critical, factors

    to living a healthy life,
    but what if I told you
  • 0:50 - 0:56
    that caring for your body was
    the least important part of your health?

    What do you think?

    I'm a physician,
    so if you'd told me that five years ago,
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    that would have been total sacrilege.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    I mean, I spent 12 years training,
  • 1:07 - 1:13
    because the body is supposed to be
    the foundation for everything in life.
  • 1:13 - 1:18
    But what if I told you that the medical
    profession had it all backwards,
  • 1:18 - 1:23
    if the body doesn't shape
    how we live our lives?
  • 1:23 - 1:29
    What if the body is actually
    a mirror of how we live our lives?
  • 1:29 - 1:33
    Think about it for a minute.
    Think about a time in your life
  • 1:33 - 1:37
    where you weren't living the life
    you were supposed to be living.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    Maybe you were in the wrong relationship;
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    or you were in
    some hostile work environment
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    doing what you thought you should do;
  • 1:45 - 1:51
    or you were creatively thwarted,
    you felt spiritually disconnected.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
    And what if you started getting
    little inklings from the body,
  • 1:55 - 1:58
    little physical symptoms?
  • 1:58 - 2:01
    You know, the body's trying to tell you
    something and you ignore it,
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    because you're supposed to do
    what you're doing.
  • 2:03 - 2:06
    And then the body totally decompensates.
  • 2:06 - 2:10
    Can you think about a time in your life
    where something like that has happened?
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    Yeah, I see a lot of noddings.
  • 2:12 - 2:15
    Yeah, me too.
    Same thing happened to me.
  • 2:15 - 2:19
    So this is what the body does,
    the body is brilliant this way,
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    the body speaks to us in whispers.
  • 2:21 - 2:26
    And if we ignore the whispers of the body,
    the body starts to yell.
  • 2:26 - 2:31
    Millions of people in this country
    are ignoring the whispers of the body.
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    We are suffering from an epidemic
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    that modern medicine
    has no idea what to do with.
  • 2:36 - 2:41
    People suffering from
    this epidemic are fatigued,
  • 2:41 - 2:47
    they're anxious and depressed,
    they toss and turn at night,
  • 2:47 - 2:51
    they've lost their libido.
  • 2:51 - 2:55
    They suffer from
    a whole variety of aches and pains,
  • 2:58 - 3:01
    so they go to the doctor,
    'cause something is wrong.
  • 3:01 - 3:06
    And the doctor
    runs a whole battery of tests,
  • 3:06 - 3:10
    and the tests all come back normal,
    so the patient gets diagnosed as "well".
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    Only the patient does not feel well.
  • 3:12 - 3:16
    So she goes to another doctor and
    she starts the whole process over again,
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    because something is clearly wrong.
  • 3:18 - 3:21
    And it is wrong,
    it's just not what she thinks.
  • 3:23 - 3:26
    I used to work in
    a really busy managed care practice,
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    I was seeing 40 patients a day.
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    And I would get so freaking frustrated
    with these patients.
  • 3:31 - 3:35
    They would come in and it was so obvious
    they were really suffering.
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    And I'd run the tests,
    everything would come back normal,
  • 3:38 - 3:40
    I'd diagnose them well,
    and they'd look at me like:
  • 3:40 - 3:43
    No, I'm not well, something's wrong.
  • 3:43 - 3:47
    And I felt so frustrated because
    I couldn't come up with a diagnosis.
  • 3:47 - 3:50
    And they just wanted, please God,
    give me a pill.
  • 3:50 - 3:53
    And there was no pill,
    there's no pill to treat it,
  • 3:53 - 3:56
    there's no lab test
    to diagnose this epidemic,
  • 3:56 - 4:01
    there's no vaccine to prevent it,
    no surgery to cut it out.
  • 4:01 - 4:04
    It wasn't until years later
    that I realized I was suffering
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    from the same epidemic
    my patients were.
  • 4:06 - 4:09
    By the time I was 33 years old,
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    I was your typical physician.
  • 4:11 - 4:14
    I had succeeded in everything I ever
    wanted to achieve in my life, I thought.
  • 4:14 - 4:18
    I had all the trappings of success,
    the ocean front house in San Diego,
  • 4:18 - 4:22
    the vacation home, the boat,
    the big fat retirement account,
  • 4:22 - 4:27
    so I could be happy
    one day in the future.
  • 4:27 - 4:31
    I was twice divorced by that point.
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    I had been diagnosed
    with high blood pressure.
  • 4:33 - 4:36
    I was taking three medications
    that failed to control my blood pressure
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    and I had just been diagnosed
  • 4:38 - 4:42
    with precancerous cells
    of my cervix that needed surgery.
  • 4:42 - 4:48
    Even more importantly I was so
    disconnected from who I was,
  • 4:48 - 4:56
    so totally disillusioned with my job,
    so completely spiritually tapped out,
  • 4:58 - 5:00
    that I didn't even know
    who I was any more.
  • 5:00 - 5:03
    I'd covered myself up
    with a whole series of masks.
  • 5:03 - 5:06
    I had the doctor mask, like when you
    put on the white coat,
  • 5:06 - 5:09
    stand up on a pedestal,
    pretend you got it all together,
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    you know it all.
  • 5:11 - 5:14
    And I am also a professional artist,
    so I had the artist mask,
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    where you've got to be, you know,
    dark and brooding,
  • 5:16 - 5:22
    mysterious - starving,
    that wasn't me either.
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    And then I had gotten married
    a third time,
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    you know, third time is a charm.
  • 5:26 - 5:29
    So now I've got this dutiful wife mask
    I've gotta wear,
  • 5:29 - 5:31
    where I've got to get dinner on the table
  • 5:31 - 5:33
    and make sure
    that I've got the right sexy lingerie on.
  • 5:33 - 5:35
    And then I got pregnant and all of sudden
  • 5:35 - 5:38
    there's this huge mummy mask
    you're supposed to wear, right?
  • 5:38 - 5:40
    You guys know the mummy mask.
  • 5:40 - 5:42
    You're supposed to instantly
    inherit the gene
  • 5:42 - 5:47
    that makes you capable of baking the
    perfect cupcake.
  • 5:48 - 5:50
    That's where I was,
    wearing all those masks,
  • 5:50 - 5:53
    when my perfect storm hit.
  • 5:54 - 6:00
    And at this point in my life,
    it was January 2006,
  • 6:00 - 6:03
    and I gave birth to my daughter
    by C-section,
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    my sixteen-year-old dog died,
  • 6:05 - 6:08
    my healthy young brother wound up
    in full-blown liver failure
  • 6:08 - 6:11
    from the antibiotic Zithromax,
  • 6:11 - 6:18
    and my beloved father passed away
    from a brain tumor, all in two weeks.
  • 6:18 - 6:21
    I had just started to take a breath,
    when my husband,
  • 6:21 - 6:23
    who was the stay home for my newborn,
  • 6:23 - 6:29
    cut two fingers off his left hand
    with the table saw.
  • 6:32 - 6:34
    Yeah -
  • 6:34 - 6:42
    They say when your life falls apart,
    you either grow, or you grow a tumor.
  • 6:42 - 6:47
    Fortunately for me I decided to grow,
    there was something in me.
  • 6:47 - 6:54
    SARK called it my "Inner Wise Self",
    which I call your Inner Pilot Light.
  • 6:54 - 7:00
    It said, "It's time to take the masks off.
    It's time to stop the madness.
  • 7:00 - 7:07
    It's time to stop doing what you should,
    and start doing what you feel."
  • 7:07 - 7:09
    And in that moment I knew
    I had to quit my job.
  • 7:09 - 7:14
    Now, this was a huge deal, right?
    I spent 12 years training to be a doctor
  • 7:14 - 7:16
    and hundreds of thousands of dollars
  • 7:16 - 7:19
    and we had all the trappings, you know,
    the house, the mortgage,
  • 7:19 - 7:21
    all the doctor stuff, right?
  • 7:21 - 7:25
    My husband was not employed
    and I had a newborn.
  • 7:25 - 7:29
    I also had to pay a malpractice tail
    to buy my freedom,
  • 7:29 - 7:32
    a six-figure malpractice tail,
    in case I ever got sued in the future.
  • 7:32 - 7:37
    So I decided to do it, and God bless
    my husband, who said let's jump together.
  • 7:37 - 7:39
    And I quit my job
    and I had to sell my house
  • 7:39 - 7:42
    and liquidate my retirement account
    and move to the country;
  • 7:42 - 7:47
    and I spent a few months painting
    and writing and licking my wounds.
  • 7:47 - 7:53
    (Laughter)
    (Applause)
  • 7:53 - 7:57
    It wasn't until about nine months later,
    everybody was like - nine months!
  • 7:57 - 7:58
    I'm an OB/GYN!
  • 7:58 - 8:02
    Nine months later I realized you can quit
    your job but you can't quit your calling.
  • 8:02 - 8:05
    And I had been called at a very young age,
    I was seven years old,
  • 8:05 - 8:09
    to the service, the practice,
    the spiritual practice of medicine;
  • 8:09 - 8:11
    and that calling hadn't gone away.
  • 8:11 - 8:16
    I had gotten so wounded by the system
    that I didn't even notice it anymore;
  • 8:16 - 8:20
    but it came back after I had rested
    and healed after a little while.
  • 8:20 - 8:24
    But I knew I couldn't go back,
    I couldn't be seeing 40 patients a day,
  • 8:24 - 8:27
    7,5 minutes with my patients,
    that wasn't why I went to medical school.
  • 8:27 - 8:33
    So it began this quest, that turned into
    an almost five-year quest now,
  • 8:33 - 8:36
    to rediscover
    what I loved about medicine.
  • 8:36 - 8:40
    So that also meant I had to figure out
    what I hated about medicine.
  • 8:40 - 8:41
    So I started by blaming everybody:
  • 8:41 - 8:44
    it was the ambulance chasing
    malpractice attorneys;
  • 8:44 - 8:48
    it's big pharma;
    it's managed care medicine;
  • 8:48 - 8:50
    it's the insurance company's fault.
  • 8:50 - 8:53
    Then I thought, oh no,
    it's the reductionist medical system,
  • 8:53 - 8:56
    we're so, so sub-specialized,
    you know?
  • 8:56 - 8:59
    I'm an OB/GYN, so I was seeing
    these patients that had pelvic problems.
  • 8:59 - 9:02
    But I knew that there was something
    bigger than the pelvis
  • 9:02 - 9:05
    that was causing their issues.
  • 9:05 - 9:08
    But I hadn't been trained
    to really look at that.
  • 9:08 - 9:11
    So I thought that's the problem,
    like you go to your doctor,
  • 9:11 - 9:14
    your pinky finger hurts and he says,
    "I'm sorry, I'm a thumb doctor."
  • 9:14 - 9:16
    (Laughter)
  • 9:16 - 9:19
    Nobody's looking at the whole picture.
  • 9:19 - 9:22
    So I thought integrative medicine
    was the answer.
  • 9:22 - 9:24
    And so I joined
    an integrative medicine practice,
  • 9:24 - 9:29
    and it was so much better; I got
    a whole hour with my patients.
  • 9:29 - 9:31
    I really got to listen to my patients,
  • 9:31 - 9:33
    we didn't accept
    managed care medical insurance,
  • 9:33 - 9:35
    so it was really so much better.
  • 9:35 - 9:38
    And then I still kept bumping up
    against something though,
  • 9:38 - 9:41
    because now if you came in
    and you were depressed
  • 9:41 - 9:44
    we were giving you herbs and amino acids
    instead of Prozac.
  • 9:44 - 9:46
    If you had other physical symptoms -
  • 9:46 - 9:48
    but it was still this allopathic model,
  • 9:48 - 9:50
    where the answer was outside of you,
  • 9:50 - 9:52
    and I had to give you
    something that you could take.
  • 9:52 - 9:56
    So I thought maybe that's not the problem,
    maybe I need to look outside of that
  • 9:56 - 9:59
    and find new tools
    for my healing toolbox.
  • 9:59 - 10:01
    So I started working
    with all these complementary
  • 10:01 - 10:03
    and alternative health care providers,
  • 10:03 - 10:06
    whom I love, acupuncturists,
    naturopaths and nutritionists.
  • 10:06 - 10:09
    And I started treating my patients
    with needles in their energy meridians
  • 10:09 - 10:12
    and raw foods, and that was great.
  • 10:12 - 10:15
    But I kept bumping up
    against the same thing:
  • 10:15 - 10:17
    patients would get better from one symptom
  • 10:17 - 10:20
    and if we didn't treat the root cause
  • 10:20 - 10:23
    of why they had
    that physical symptom in first place,
  • 10:23 - 10:25
    they just wound up getting a new symptom.
  • 10:25 - 10:29
    So at this point I was both
    really frustrated and really curious,
  • 10:29 - 10:32
    and I started down this path
    of trying to figure out
  • 10:32 - 10:34
    what really makes a body healthy,
  • 10:34 - 10:37
    and what really makes us sick.
  • 10:37 - 10:40
    And I dug into the medical literature
    and spent a year researching
  • 10:40 - 10:44
    all of the randomized controlled
    clinical trials out there.
  • 10:44 - 10:47
    And I decided this is it,
    I'm going to figure it out,
  • 10:47 - 10:48
    I'm going to find the answer.
  • 10:48 - 10:53
    And I spent hours in the library,
    researching, reading, studying.
  • 10:53 - 10:56
    What I found blew my frigging mind,
  • 10:56 - 11:00
    stuff nobody ever taught me
    in medical school.
  • 11:00 - 11:04
    All the things we think of as health,
    all the things we think matter, they do.
  • 11:04 - 11:07
    It matters that you exercise,
    it matters that you eat well,
  • 11:07 - 11:09
    it matters that you see the doctor.
  • 11:09 - 11:17
    But nobody taught me that what
    really matters is healthy relationships,
  • 11:17 - 11:22
    having a healthy professional life,
  • 11:23 - 11:27
    expressing yourself creatively,
  • 11:27 - 11:29
    being spiritually connected,
  • 11:35 - 11:37
    having a healthy sex life,
  • 11:40 - 11:43
    being healthy financially,
  • 11:45 - 11:48
    living in a healthy environment,
  • 11:51 - 11:53
    being mentally healthy,
  • 11:55 - 11:58
    and of course all the things
    we traditionally associate with health,
  • 11:58 - 12:01
    also matter,
    all the things that nurture the body.
  • 12:02 - 12:04
    The data on this is unbelievable.
  • 12:04 - 12:09
    Lots of it is not in
    the traditional journals that you read,
  • 12:09 - 12:13
    that doctors read, a lot of it's
    in the psychological literature,
  • 12:13 - 12:15
    the sociological literature.
  • 12:15 - 12:18
    But if you look deep, this is in
    The New England Journal of Medicine,
  • 12:18 - 12:21
    it's in The Journal of the
    American Medical Association,
  • 12:21 - 12:24
    it's coming out of Harvard and Yale
    and Johns Hopkins.
  • 12:24 - 12:28
    This is real data proving
    that these things are just as important,
  • 12:28 - 12:30
    if not more.
  • 12:30 - 12:32
    I had this patient, she's a raw vegan,
  • 12:32 - 12:35
    she runs marathons,
    she takes 20 supplements a day,
  • 12:35 - 12:39
    she sleeps eight hours a night,
    she does everything her doctor tells her,
  • 12:39 - 12:42
    she's got a chart this fat, and
    she's still got multiple health problems.
  • 12:42 - 12:47
    So she had heard about my philosophy,
    I had started practicing with my patients,
  • 12:47 - 12:50
    and I had an intake form
    that's about 20 pages long
  • 12:50 - 12:54
    and it asks about all those things,
    relationships, work life, spiritual life,
  • 12:54 - 12:58
    creative life, sex life,
    all of these things that make you whole.
  • 12:58 - 13:00
    So she came and she filled out her form
    and she said,
  • 13:00 - 13:02
    "Doctor, what's my diagnosis?"
  • 13:02 - 13:06
    And I said, "Honey, your diagnosis
    is you're in a freaking abusive marriage.
  • 13:06 - 13:10
    You hate your job,
    you feel creatively thwarted,
  • 13:10 - 13:14
    you're spiritually disconnected,
  • 13:14 - 13:17
    and you haven't let go of that resentment
    you have against your father
  • 13:17 - 13:19
    who molested you as a child.
  • 13:19 - 13:23
    Your body is never gonna get well
    until you heal that."
  • 13:23 - 13:27
    So if taking care of the body isn't
    the most important part of being healthy,
  • 13:27 - 13:30
    what is?
  • 13:30 - 13:35
    It's caring for the mind,
    caring for the heart,
  • 13:35 - 13:38
    caring for the soul,
  • 13:38 - 13:42
    tapping into what I call
    your Inner Pilot Light.
  • 13:42 - 13:45
    Now your pilot light is that part of you,
    that essence,
  • 13:45 - 13:50
    that authentic, deep, true part of you,
    that spiritual, divine spark
  • 13:50 - 13:52
    that always knows what's right for you.
  • 13:52 - 13:56
    You're born with it,
    it goes with you when you die,
  • 13:56 - 13:59
    and it always knows
    the truth about you and your body.
  • 13:59 - 14:02
    It comes to you in whispers;
    it's your intuition;
  • 14:02 - 14:06
    it's that beautiful part of you
    that is your biggest fan;
  • 14:06 - 14:10
    the part that writes you love letters.
  • 14:10 - 14:12
    And that is the biggest healer
    you can tap into,
  • 14:12 - 14:16
    better than any medicine,
    better than any doctor.
  • 14:16 - 14:21
    So based on everything that I learned,
    I developed a new wellness model.
  • 14:21 - 14:24
    And it was based,
    not on the pie charts and pyramids
  • 14:24 - 14:27
    that many of the wellness models
    I had studied were based on.
  • 14:27 - 14:28
    I based it on the cairn.
  • 14:28 - 14:31
    Have you guys seen these things
    around San Francisco?
  • 14:31 - 14:35
    These stacks of balanced stones,
    I love them, I've always loved them.
  • 14:35 - 14:37
    I'm an artist,
    so it appeals to me visually.
  • 14:37 - 14:41
    But I love the interdependence.
    Every stone is dependent on the other;
  • 14:41 - 14:44
    you can't just pull one stone out
    without the whole thing crumbling.
  • 14:44 - 14:47
    And the stone that's most precarious
    is the one on top.
  • 14:48 - 14:50
    That's the body,
    that's where I think of the body.
  • 14:50 - 14:53
    The body is the stone on top.
  • 14:53 - 14:57
    When any of the facets of
    what makes you whole get out of balance,
  • 14:57 - 15:00
    the body is the first to start whispering,
  • 15:00 - 15:03
    and the foundation stone
    is your Inner Pilot Light,
  • 15:03 - 15:07
    that true essence of you,
    that vulnerable, transparent part of you.
  • 15:08 - 15:13
    So based on that, I created this model,
    that I call the Whole Health Cairn.
  • 15:13 - 15:15
    And this is what my next book is about.
  • 15:15 - 15:19
    An it's taking all of the facets
    of what makes you whole;
  • 15:19 - 15:25
    it's about self-healing from the core,
    and once you recognize this,
  • 15:25 - 15:29
    then you have all the tools you need
    to start your own healing journey.
  • 15:29 - 15:32
    So all of the facets of
    what makes you whole are surrounded
  • 15:32 - 15:34
    by what I call the healing bubble.
  • 15:34 - 15:38
    This is love and gratitude and pleasure.
  • 15:38 - 15:40
    And science proves
    that all of those things
  • 15:40 - 15:45
    are good for your health as well; they are
    the glue that hold everything together.
  • 15:45 - 15:50
    So I challenge you.
    If you have any physical symptom,
  • 15:51 - 15:55
    if you're suffering from the epidemic
    that plagues the developed world,
  • 15:55 - 15:59
    I want you to ask yourself,
    "What's the real reason I'm sick
  • 15:59 - 16:05
    or suffering, what's out of balance
    in my whole health cairn?"
  • 16:05 - 16:12
    What's the real diagnosis
    and what can you do about it?
  • 16:12 - 16:14
    How can you be more transparent?
  • 16:14 - 16:17
    How can you open yourself up
    to more possibility?
  • 16:17 - 16:22
    How can you be more honest with yourself
    about what you need and who you are?
  • 16:22 - 16:26

    about the power of vulnerability -

    I see a lot of nodding heads, I love it -

    it's so fabulous, but it talks about
    the science behind being true,
  • 16:34 - 16:37
    being vulnerable, being transparent.
  • 16:37 - 16:42
    It generates love and intimacy
    which increases oxytocin and endorphins,
  • 16:42 - 16:46
    and reduces harmful stress hormones
    like cortisol and adrenaline.
  • 16:46 - 16:52
    When we let our true self be seen,
    when we let our Inner Pilot Light radiate,
  • 16:52 - 16:53
    we heal from the inside out
  • 16:53 - 16:58
    and it's more powerful than anything
    medicine can give you from the outside.
  • 16:58 - 17:01
    So I challenge you to write
    the prescription for yourself.
  • 17:01 - 17:04
    No doctor can do this for you.
    We can give you drugs,
  • 17:04 - 17:07
    we can give you surgery,
    and sometimes you need that,
  • 17:07 - 17:11
    that's the jump-start
    of the self-healing process.
  • 17:11 - 17:14
    But to heal to the core, so that
    you don't develop new symptoms,
  • 17:14 - 17:19
    so you don't need another surgery --
    you gotta write your own prescription.
  • 17:19 - 17:27
    So I ask you, "What is it that you need,
    what does your body need to get healthy?
  • 17:27 - 17:32
    What is it that you need to change,
    What needs to be tweaked in your life?"
  • 17:32 - 17:35
    If you knew
    that stripping off all of your masks
  • 17:35 - 17:37
    and letting us see
    that beautiful light within you,
  • 17:37 - 17:42
    was the solution to your health problems,
    would you be willing to do it?

    I dare you.

    It just might make
    your body ripe for miracles.
