THE PLAGUE OF NATIONALISM

  • 0:03 - 0:09
This episode of It's the End of the World
  • 0:09 - 0:10
As We Know it and I Feel Fine,
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    was made possible by contributions
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    from slaves like you.
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    Spank you very much!
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    Gooooooooood morning slaves
  • 0:48 - 0:50
and welcome to another sedition of
  • 0:50 - 0:52
It's the End of the World as We Know it
  • 0:52 - 0:53
    and I Feel Fine...
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    the show where schadenfreude
  • 0:55 - 0:56
is a dish best served cold.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    As the morning papers
  • 0:58 - 0:59
    blared the news
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    some were stunned.
  • 1:01 - 1:02
    Shit!
  • 1:02 - 1:02
    Shit!
  • 1:02 - 1:02
    Shit!
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    Shit!
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    Scheiße!
  • 1:04 - 1:04
    Merde!
  • 1:04 - 1:08
    I see.
  • 1:08 - 1:09
I am your host the Stimulator
  • 1:09 - 1:11
and for the past week or so,
  • 1:11 - 1:12
    one thing's been dominating
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    the headlines
  • 1:13 - 1:13
    Brexit
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    Brexit
  • 1:14 - 1:15
    Brexit
  • 1:15 - 1:15
    Brexit
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    Brexit
  • 1:16 - 1:16
    Brexit
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    Brisket
  • 1:18 - 1:18
    Booyakasha!
  • 1:18 - 1:21
Yup... on June 23rd peeps in Britain
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    voted in a national referendum
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    to leave the EU
  • 1:25 - 1:26
    We're out!
  • 1:26 - 1:27
plunging both the UK and Europe
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    into a deep existential crisis.
  • 1:29 - 1:30
    And like... our future's
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    kinda been taken away.
  • 1:32 - 1:33
    And as political commentators,
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    journalists, bloggers
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    and pundits of all stripes
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    endlessly pontificate on the causes
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    and possible consequences
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    of the looming Brexit...
  • 1:41 - 1:43
the only thing that peeps seem to
  • 1:43 - 1:44
be able to agree on is that
  • 1:44 - 1:45
    it's a fucking game-changer,
  • 1:45 - 1:47
and that the future is more uncertain
  • 1:47 - 1:50
than it has been in a long fucking time.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
As soon as the first poll results
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    started coming in,
  • 1:53 - 1:54
    the British pound went into
  • 1:54 - 1:55
    mothafuckin' free-fall,
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    dropping to its lowest rate
  • 1:57 - 1:58
    in over thirty fucking years.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    London’s infamous financial district,
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    the so-called City of London,
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    also took a proper pounding,
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    posting the biggest losses since
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    the 2007-2008 financial crisis.
  • 2:09 - 2:10
    All around the world
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    stock markets are experiencing
  • 2:12 - 2:13
    sporadic aftershocks,
  • 2:13 - 2:15
    as ever-opportunistic investors
  • 2:15 - 2:17
shift vast sums of money around the world
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    in a ruthless effort
  • 2:19 - 2:20
    to profit off the crisis.
  • 2:20 - 2:21
    Politicians in Scotland
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    and Northern Ireland have already
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    called for their own referendums
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    - raising the spectre of the break-up
  • 2:27 - 2:28
    of the UK itself.
  • 2:29 - 2:30
    Some people hate the English.
  • 2:31 - 2:31
    I don't... they're just wankers.
  • 2:31 - 2:32
    We on the other hand,
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    are colonized by wankers!
  • 2:34 - 2:34
The morning after the Brexit vote
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    Britain's posh, pig-fucking PM,
  • 2:38 - 2:39
    David Cameron,
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    who initially proposed the referendum
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    in a Faustian bargain to
  • 2:42 - 2:44
    maintain his position atop the
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    Conservative Party's pecking order,
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    acknowledged in the most eloquent,
  • 2:48 - 2:50
face-saving way that he could muster,
  • 2:50 - 2:51
that he had shit the bed
  • 2:51 - 2:53
and had no intentions of sticking around
  • 2:53 - 2:55
to watch the help clean it up.
  • 2:55 - 2:57
I will do everything I can
  • 2:57 - 2:58
    as Prime Minister
  • 2:58 - 3:00
to steady the ship over the coming
  • 3:00 - 3:01
    weeks and months.
  • 3:01 - 3:03
But I do not think it would be right
  • 3:03 - 3:05
for me to try to be the captain
  • 3:05 - 3:06
    that steers our country
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    to its next destination.
  • 3:08 - 3:11
    Just breathe it in.
  • 3:11 - 3:12
Let's just take this in together,
  • 3:12 - 3:13
    shall we?
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    A political legacy in tatters...
  • 3:15 - 3:16
    ... the Prime Minister who
  • 3:16 - 3:17
    - who took us out of Europe.
  • 3:17 - 3:21
    Bye Bye!
  • 3:21 - 3:23
Frankly, I don't have anything to hide.
  • 3:23 - 3:24
    Oink oink oink!
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    He was a frat boy
  • 3:26 - 3:27
    - a glorified frat boy.
  • 3:27 - 3:28
Stuck his penis in the head
  • 3:28 - 3:29
    of a dead pig.
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    David Cameron - pigfucker!
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    Maybe WE should kiss
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    just to break the tension.
  • 3:36 - 3:38
Buuuuuuuuut while it's a rare treat
  • 3:38 - 3:39
    to watch David Cameron rewarded
  • 3:39 - 3:42
    for his arrogant, tone-deaf hubris
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    with an early fucking retirement,
  • 3:44 - 3:45
that doesn’t mean that things are
  • 3:45 - 3:46
    necessarily going to be
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    better off once he’s gone.
  • 3:48 - 3:50
Mixed in with the British voters'
  • 3:50 - 3:51
    righteous anger at
  • 3:51 - 3:53
    the austerity-pushing bankers
  • 3:53 - 3:55
    and faceless technocrats in Brussels,
  • 3:55 - 3:56
    has been a terrifying rise
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    in right-wing nationalism,
  • 3:58 - 3:59
    racism and xenophobia.
  • 3:59 - 4:00
    Despite England’s role
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    as the literal fucking flag-bearer
  • 4:02 - 4:04
    of centuries of colonialism
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    and global imperialist domination,
  • 4:06 - 4:08
one of the main issues during
  • 4:08 - 4:09
    the referendum campaign
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    was fears over immigration,
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    with the Euro-skeptic party, UKIP,
  • 4:13 - 4:15
headed by Britain’s creepy racist uncle,
  • 4:15 - 4:16
    Nigel Farage,
  • 4:16 - 4:18
    and former mayor of London
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    and petulant man-child, Boris Johnson,
  • 4:20 - 4:22
    leading the fascistic charge.
  • 4:22 - 4:23
    Since the Brexit vote
  • 4:23 - 4:25
    attacks against Eastern Europeans,
  • 4:25 - 4:26
    ethnic minorities,
  • 4:26 - 4:28
and people perceived to be Muslims
  • 4:28 - 4:29
    have spiked sharply,
  • 4:29 - 4:31
with over 90 hate crimes reported
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    over the following three days
  • 4:33 - 4:33
    - ranging from threatening notices
  • 4:33 - 4:35
    and graffiti,
  • 4:35 - 4:37
    to arsons and vicious assaults.
  • 4:37 - 4:39
While these tensions have been building
  • 4:39 - 4:40
    for some time now,
  • 4:40 - 4:42
far-right groups are clearly on the march
  • 4:42 - 4:43
    and have only been emboldened
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    by recent events.
  • 4:45 - 4:47
On June 24th around 2000 people,
  • 4:47 - 4:49
including a sizeable crew of antifa,
  • 4:49 - 4:50
took to the streets of London
  • 4:50 - 4:52
to demonstrate their support for migrants
  • 4:52 - 4:53
    and vent their rage at
  • 4:53 - 4:55
the right-wing tabloids that have been
  • 4:55 - 4:56
    steadily churning out
  • 4:56 - 4:57
    sensationalist headlines,
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    and whipping up racist,
  • 4:59 - 5:00
    nationalist sentiment
  • 5:00 - 5:01
    for months on end.
  • 5:01 - 5:03
    Despite all the uncertainty currently
  • 5:03 - 5:05
gripping the UK, one thing is clear.
  • 5:05 - 5:06
    The time has come for
  • 5:06 - 5:08
    bold militant actions
  • 5:08 - 5:09
    and sustained anti-racist,
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    pro-immigrant organizing
  • 5:11 - 5:12
    in working-class neighbourhoods
  • 5:12 - 5:14
    across the UK and beyond.
  • 5:14 - 5:15
    Because make no mistake.
  • 5:15 - 5:17
While Britain is the first major country
  • 5:17 - 5:18
    to ditch the EU,
  • 5:18 - 5:21
they almost certainly won't be the last.
  • 5:21 - 5:23
    With far-right politicians in France
  • 5:23 - 5:24
    and the Netherlands already calling
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    for their own national referendums,
  • 5:26 - 5:28
the disintegration of the European Project
  • 5:28 - 5:30
may come sooner than people think.
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    If the mothafuckin resistance
  • 5:32 - 5:33
    doesn't rise to this challenge
  • 5:33 - 5:35
then we are in for some seriously
  • 5:35 - 5:36
    dark fucking times.
  • 5:36 - 5:39
And finally, in sad fucking news,
  • 5:39 - 5:41
on June 7th Roger Clement passed away.
  • 5:41 - 5:44
Roger was an OG from so-called Ottawa,
  • 5:44 - 5:46
who did three years in the clink
  • 5:46 - 5:47
    for fire-bombing a Royal
  • 5:47 - 5:48
    Bank of Canada branch
  • 5:48 - 5:50
back in the summer of 2010.
  • 5:50 - 5:52
During his trial Roger was solid
  • 5:52 - 5:53
    and staunchly principled,
  • 5:53 - 5:55
    pleading guilty in exchange for
  • 5:55 - 5:56
    all charges being dropped
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    against his co-accused.
  • 5:58 - 5:59
    He will be missed.
  • 5:59 - 6:00
    Rest in power, comrade.
  • 7:49 - 7:50
    As Europe finds itself plagued
  • 7:50 - 7:53
by a resurgence of right-wing nationalism
  • 7:53 - 7:54
    and a corresponding rise in
  • 7:54 - 7:56
    hostile anti-immigrant sentiment,
  • 7:56 - 7:58
over on this side of the pond,
  • 7:58 - 8:00
a similar dynamic is playing out
  • 8:00 - 8:02
    in the United Snakes
  • 8:02 - 8:03
    - albeit one with distinctly
  • 8:03 - 8:04
    American characteristics.
  • 8:04 - 8:06
A group of Texans are pushing for
  • 8:06 - 8:08
    a Texas exit... or Texit.
  • 8:08 - 8:09
    Texit?
  • 8:09 - 8:09
    Texit.
  • 8:09 - 8:11
    Yee-haw!
  • 8:11 - 8:13
Buuuuuuuuuuut while the odds of a
  • 8:13 - 8:14
    so-called Texit are slim
  • 8:14 - 8:16
    to mothafuckin nil,
  • 8:16 - 8:17
there's no getting around the fact that
  • 8:17 - 8:18
    the political atmosphere in
  • 8:18 - 8:21
the United Snakes is toxic as fuck,
  • 8:21 - 8:23
and shit only seems to be getting worse.
  • 8:23 - 8:25
    Decades of neoliberal capitalist
  • 8:25 - 8:26
    restructuring has produced
  • 8:26 - 8:27
    vast economic deserts
  • 8:27 - 8:29
    in so-called Middle-America,
  • 8:29 - 8:30
as jobs have been shipped off
  • 8:30 - 8:32
    to hyper-exploited labour markets
  • 8:32 - 8:33
    in the Global South.
  • 8:33 - 8:34
    Public schools have been decimated
  • 8:34 - 8:36
by years of chronic underfunding, and
  • 8:36 - 8:38
federal and state prisons are overflowing.
  • 8:38 - 8:40
    Mass shootings have become
  • 8:40 - 8:42
    an almost daily fucking phenomenon
  • 8:42 - 8:44
    and each fresh tragedy is
  • 8:44 - 8:46
    immediately and reflexively seized upon
  • 8:46 - 8:47
    as a chance to blame
  • 8:47 - 8:49
    politically convenient scapegoats.
  • 8:49 - 8:51
    A Muslim scholar says
  • 8:51 - 8:53
    killing homosexuals is the
  • 8:53 - 8:54
    compassionate thing to do.
  • 8:54 - 8:55
    This is part of
  • 8:55 - 8:57
    their religious doctrine....
  • 8:57 - 8:58
    their ideology.
  • 8:58 - 9:00
    Within this bleak fucking context
  • 9:00 - 9:02
a growing army of pissed off Americans
  • 9:02 - 9:03
    have retreated into fantasies
  • 9:03 - 9:05
    based on heavily romanticized
  • 9:05 - 9:07
    and white-washed images
  • 9:07 - 9:08
    of a fictional past
  • 9:08 - 9:10
    and vast fucking conspiracies
  • 9:10 - 9:11
    promoted by red-faced asshats
  • 9:11 - 9:13
    like Alex Jones.
  • 9:13 - 9:15
You're declaring war on this country
  • 9:15 - 9:16
    with a bunch of jihadis
  • 9:16 - 9:17
    you brought in!
  • 9:17 - 9:19
You did it, you son of a bitch!
  • 9:19 - 9:20
    The Trump campaign has been
  • 9:20 - 9:22
a clarion call for millions of Americans
  • 9:22 - 9:25
    disillusioned by the repeated betrayals
  • 9:25 - 9:26
    of Washington-insiders
  • 9:26 - 9:27
    like Hillary Clinton.
  • 9:27 - 9:29
    When their holdings are invested
  • 9:29 - 9:30
    in the Cayman Islands
  • 9:30 - 9:32
    and her husband is middle-man
  • 9:32 - 9:34
to some of the world's biggest deals
  • 9:34 - 9:35
    as they feather their nest
  • 9:35 - 9:37
    at the expense of America...
  • 9:37 - 9:40
it is time to take the country back!
  • 9:40 - 9:42
And as his fascist calls for border walls
  • 9:42 - 9:44
    and mass deportations of Muslims
  • 9:44 - 9:45
    have sparked militant resistance
  • 9:45 - 9:47
from peeps in cities across the country,
  • 9:47 - 9:49
    many Trump supporters have
  • 9:49 - 9:50
    announced plans to descend
  • 9:50 - 9:52
on Cleveland for the RNC on July 18th,
  • 9:52 - 9:53
    in what's expected to be
  • 9:53 - 9:55
    an epic showdown between
  • 9:55 - 9:56
    two bitterly opposed camps.
  • 9:56 - 9:58
    Fittingly, this showdown will be
  • 9:58 - 10:00
taking place in an open-carry state,
  • 10:00 - 10:02
in the very city where 12 year old
  • 10:02 - 10:04
    Tamir Rice was gunned down
  • 10:04 - 10:06
by racist fucking pigs in 2014.
  • 10:06 - 10:08
    And outside the well-managed spectacle
  • 10:08 - 10:10
    of the 2016 electoral farce,
  • 10:10 - 10:12
    neo-nazi and white supremacist groups,
  • 10:12 - 10:14
like the KKK, have also been
  • 10:14 - 10:15

    taking advantage of
  • 10:15 - 10:16
    the current levels of racist,
  • 10:16 - 10:17
    hyper-nationalist rhetoric
  • 10:17 - 10:18
    thrust into the mainstream
  • 10:18 - 10:19
    by Trump's campaign.
  • 10:19 - 10:21
    In the latest example,
  • 10:21 - 10:22
    on June 26th, members of
  • 10:22 - 10:24
    the Traditionalist Workers Party
  • 10:24 - 10:25
attempted to hold a rally at
  • 10:25 - 10:27
    the California state legislature,
  • 10:27 - 10:29
    in Sacramento.
  • 10:29 - 10:30
They were confronted by a group of
  • 10:30 - 10:32
    roughly 400 antifa, who proceeded
  • 10:32 - 10:34
to shut them the fuck down, and give
  • 10:34 - 10:36
the nazi scum a serious fucking thrashing.
  • 10:36 - 10:38
    During the resulting scuffle,
  • 10:38 - 10:39
    numerous people were stabbed,
  • 10:39 - 10:41
including at least 4 anti-fascist comrades
  • 10:41 - 10:43
    - with 3 more comrades hospitalized
  • 10:43 - 10:45
    due to blunt force trauma.
  • 10:45 - 10:46
That's why we need to take them on
  • 10:46 - 10:47
    directly.
  • 10:47 - 10:49
    Take them on head on.
  • 10:49 - 10:51
Confront them with as many people
  • 10:51 - 10:53
as possible - prepared to shut them down.
  • 10:53 - 10:54
And that is what this demonstration
  • 10:54 - 10:55
    did today.
  • 10:55 - 10:57
    Sacramento was the latest front
  • 10:57 - 10:59
in an increasingly violent battle between
  • 10:59 - 11:01
    fascist and anti-fascist militants.
  • 11:01 - 11:02
    The way things are headed,
  • 11:02 - 11:04
it's not going to be the last.
  • 11:04 - 11:06
    So... to learn more about
  • 11:06 - 11:07
just what the fuck went down,
  • 11:07 - 11:08
I recently caught up with Brazo,
  • 11:08 - 11:10
    an anti-fascist organizer who was
  • 11:10 - 11:12
    on the ground in Sacramento.
  • 11:12 - 11:14
Hey Brazo, how the fuck are you?
  • 11:14 - 11:15
    I'm alright.
  • 11:15 - 11:18
So what exactly went down in Sacramento
  • 11:18 - 11:19
    on June 26th?
  • 11:19 - 11:21
Well in Sacramento on June 26th,
  • 11:21 - 11:22
    the Traditionalist Workers Party,
  • 11:22 - 11:24
in conjunction with the Golden State Skins
  • 11:24 - 11:26
    and the Klu Klux Klan,
  • 11:26 - 11:28
tried to have a permitted demonstration
  • 11:28 - 11:30
at the west steps, in Sacramento.
  • 11:30 - 11:33
Now there was about 25 to 30
  • 11:33 - 11:35
    Traditionalist Workers Party people.
  • 11:35 - 11:37
    and the anti-fascist and anti-racist
  • 11:37 - 11:39
    crews were about 400 deep.
  • 11:39 - 11:41
    When we approached,
  • 11:41 - 11:43
it immediately turned into a brawl.
  • 11:43 - 11:45
    They took knives out.
  • 11:45 - 11:46
    They started stabbing people...
  • 11:46 - 11:48
    people defended themselves.
  • 11:48 - 11:50
They took a really bad beating.
  • 11:50 - 11:52
I think that everyone on their side
  • 11:52 - 11:54
had some blood of their own on them.
  • 11:54 - 11:55
    And we stopped them
  • 11:55 - 11:56
    - we stopped them from having
  • 11:56 - 11:59
their meeting, but at a huge cost to us.
  • 11:59 - 12:00
On the anti-racist side there were
  • 12:00 - 12:02
probably a total of 9 people
  • 12:02 - 12:03
that were injured, and I think
  • 12:03 - 12:04
the number was 7 of them
  • 12:04 - 12:05
    hospitalized.
  • 12:05 - 12:07
We had anticipated that there would be
  • 12:07 - 12:10
    injuries... but really didn't anticipate
  • 12:10 - 12:11
that it was gonna escalate this quickly
  • 12:11 - 12:13
and severely for people on our side.
  • 12:13 - 12:15
But the medical people who were there,
  • 12:15 - 12:18
    y'know, they did their job.
  • 12:18 - 12:20
They played their role well enough
  • 12:20 - 12:21
    that people who were taken
  • 12:21 - 12:22
    to the hospital didn't die.
  • 12:22 - 12:24
    How was the counter-demonstration
  • 12:24 - 12:25
    organized?
  • 12:25 - 12:27
We treated June 26th a lot like
  • 12:27 - 12:29
    a major convergence, because
  • 12:29 - 12:31
    that's how the fascists had
  • 12:31 - 12:33
    plugged what was happening.
  • 12:33 - 12:34
You know, this was gonna be the time
  • 12:34 - 12:37
that the KKK, the Golden State Skinheads
  • 12:37 - 12:39
    and the Traditionalist Workers Party
  • 12:39 - 12:41
    were gonna show their level
  • 12:41 - 12:43
    of coordination in the street
  • 12:43 - 12:44
    and materialize their politics.
  • 12:44 - 12:46
And that's why we treated it
  • 12:46 - 12:47
    as such a serious threat,
  • 12:47 - 12:48
to be able to physically stop them
  • 12:48 - 12:49
    from manifesting that racist,
  • 12:49 - 12:51
    fascist politics in the streets.
  • 12:51 - 12:52
So there were a lot of trainings
  • 12:52 - 12:53
    that happened before.
  • 12:53 - 12:55
A lot of infrastructure was put
  • 12:55 - 12:56
in to get people from the places
  • 12:56 - 12:57
they were coming from all over
  • 12:57 - 12:59
the west coast - to be able to
  • 12:59 - 13:00
    go to Sacramento.
  • 13:00 - 13:02
    Medical teams were assembled
  • 13:02 - 13:05
    and medics started gaining supplies.
  • 13:05 - 13:07
We did a couple of fundraisers to go
  • 13:07 - 13:08
    buy the medical supplies.
  • 13:08 - 13:09
    There were medical trainings
  • 13:09 - 13:10
    that were done.
  • 13:10 - 13:12
    The NLG [National Lawyer's Guild]
  • 13:12 - 13:13
really stepped in - so a legal hotline
  • 13:13 - 13:14
    was established.
  • 13:14 - 13:16
There was also an immense amount
  • 13:16 - 13:18
    of help by Indigenous groups
  • 13:18 - 13:20
in Sacramento that really supported us
  • 13:20 - 13:22
in many ways that I think are
  • 13:22 - 13:23
    really important, and I hope
  • 13:23 - 13:25
    we continue that relationship.
  • 13:25 - 13:27
So we really treated it not only
  • 13:27 - 13:29
    as a convergence for anti-fascists
  • 13:29 - 13:31
    and anti-racists on June 26th,
  • 13:31 - 13:32
but also a way to start to
  • 13:32 - 13:33
    already build these networks.
  • 13:33 - 13:35
And to build them up strong
  • 13:35 - 13:36
    and to build confidence
  • 13:36 - 13:37
    in those networks.
  • 13:37 - 13:38
To be able to squash them out
  • 13:38 - 13:39
wherever they go, before this issue
  • 13:39 - 13:41
    gets more severe.
  • 13:41 - 13:42
Who the fuck are the Traditionalist
  • 13:42 - 13:43
    Workers Party?
  • 13:43 - 13:45
And why were they trying to rally?
  • 13:45 - 13:47
    Well the Traditionalist Workers Party
  • 13:47 - 13:49
    is a white supremacist,
  • 13:49 - 13:50
    white nationalist group.
  • 13:50 - 13:53
    They want your classic fascism.
  • 13:53 - 13:57
They want the consolidation of the economy
  • 13:57 - 13:59
and the state, under white culture.
  • 13:59 - 14:01
They're led by a clown named
  • 14:01 - 14:02
    Matthew Heimbach
  • 14:02 - 14:03
who lives somewhere on the east coast.
  • 14:03 - 14:05
And what they're basically trying to do
  • 14:05 - 14:06
    is trying to consolidate
  • 14:06 - 14:09
all of these different white power
  • 14:09 - 14:10
    organizations.
  • 14:10 - 14:11
    And they're basically trying to
  • 14:11 - 14:13
    move their politics from
  • 14:13 - 14:16
online rhetoric into the material world.
  • 14:16 - 14:19
Their stance was that if they could
  • 14:19 - 14:22
    converge in liberal California,
  • 14:22 - 14:23
    then they could converge anywhere
  • 14:23 - 14:25
    in the country, materially.
  • 14:25 - 14:26
Which is why we focused so much
  • 14:26 - 14:28
    energy on stopping the rally
  • 14:28 - 14:29
    from happening altogether.
  • 14:29 - 14:31
    Anti-fascist militants are often
  • 14:31 - 14:32
    denounced by liberals and
  • 14:32 - 14:35
    so-called “progressives” in particular
  • 14:35 - 14:36
for their use of violent tactics
  • 14:36 - 14:38
when confronting members of the far right.
  • 14:38 - 14:40
What do you have to say to
  • 14:40 - 14:42
those critics who argue for a strategy
  • 14:42 - 14:43
    of nonviolence and deescalation
  • 14:43 - 14:45
when dealing with these types of groups?
  • 14:45 - 14:47
It kind of brings to mind,
  • 14:47 - 14:48
    when people start that conversation,
  • 14:48 - 14:50
    is that Howard Zinn quote:
  • 14:50 - 14:52
"You can't be neutral on a moving train."
  • 14:52 - 14:54
    Our society, and our culture
  • 14:54 - 14:56
is already moving in this one direction.
  • 14:56 - 14:58
Hegemony is our society requires violence.
  • 14:58 - 14:59
    Black and brown people,
  • 14:59 - 15:01
    trans people, queer people
  • 15:01 - 15:02
    - our identities are kept in check
  • 15:02 - 15:03
    by violence.
  • 15:03 - 15:05
    Whether it's public executions
  • 15:05 - 15:06
of black and brown people in the street,
  • 15:06 - 15:09
    mass incarceration, gender policing
  • 15:09 - 15:11
all of these are ways that are
  • 15:11 - 15:13
violently keeping us in a subservient
  • 15:13 - 15:15
    position to white supremacy,
  • 15:15 - 15:17
    capitalism, the state and hegemony,
  • 15:17 - 15:17
    basically.
  • 15:17 - 15:19
    So our liberation requires anything
  • 15:19 - 15:20
    in the toolbox,
  • 15:20 - 15:21
    which unfortunately does
  • 15:21 - 15:23
    include violence sometimes.
  • 15:23 - 15:24
It's not like violence is the objective
  • 15:24 - 15:25
    of these demonstrations.
  • 15:25 - 15:27
    It's a means for liberation.
  • 15:27 - 15:28
    And it's a means for self-defense.
  • 15:28 - 15:31
Fascism, as a popular social movement,
  • 15:31 - 15:32
    thrives on widespread feelings
  • 15:32 - 15:35
    of victimization, or declining privilege
  • 15:35 - 15:38
among socially dominant sectors of society
  • 15:38 - 15:40
    such as white, working-class men.
  • 15:40 - 15:41
    Realizing this,
  • 15:41 - 15:42
do you think that groups like the
  • 15:42 - 15:44
    Traditionalist Workers Party are actively
  • 15:44 - 15:46
    seeking out physical confrontations
  • 15:46 - 15:47
in order to inflame these feelings
  • 15:47 - 15:47
    of white male victimization
  • 15:47 - 15:50
    and garner more attention?
  • 15:50 - 15:52
And if so, how should that
  • 15:52 - 15:54
    factor into how anti-fascists,
  • 15:54 - 15:56
    feminists and anti-racists should
  • 15:56 - 15:58
respond to their attempts to organize?
  • 15:58 - 16:01
There's no way for us to route around it.
  • 16:01 - 16:03
    Other-ized identities: black, brown,
  • 16:03 - 16:05
    queer, trans, what have you...
  • 16:05 - 16:07
    all these other-ized identities
  • 16:07 - 16:09
that are not male or white
  • 16:09 - 16:11
    - our liberation and their privilege
  • 16:11 - 16:14
    are contradictory... opposed to
  • 16:14 - 16:15
    one another.
  • 16:15 - 16:16
They can't exist in the same world.
  • 16:16 - 16:18
So every time that we're asserting
  • 16:18 - 16:21
    our rights as other-ized people,
  • 16:21 - 16:22
    asserting our dignity,
  • 16:22 - 16:24
it's a slipping of that privilege.
  • 16:24 - 16:25
So you could say that a lot
  • 16:25 - 16:27
    of these white supremacist groups
  • 16:27 - 16:28
    they're sort of like, budding,
  • 16:28 - 16:30
it's at the same time that
  • 16:30 - 16:31
the United States sees its first
  • 16:31 - 16:32
    Black president, and the
  • 16:32 - 16:34
ascension of the Black Lives Matter
  • 16:34 - 16:34
    movement.
  • 16:34 - 16:36
    Not that the Obama administration
  • 16:36 - 16:37
is an assertion of that, but,
  • 16:37 - 16:39
the ascension of the Black Lives Matter
  • 16:39 - 16:41
movement, and the wide criticism of
  • 16:41 - 16:43
    racist police practices,
  • 16:43 - 16:45
is a slipping of white privilege
  • 16:45 - 16:46
    - or at least the beginning of
  • 16:46 - 16:47
the dialogue about what white privilege
  • 16:47 - 16:49
    does to black bodies.
  • 16:49 - 16:51
    So, it's either white people
  • 16:51 - 16:52
    - white working-class people -
  • 16:54 - 16:54
    realize that their disenfranchisement
  • 16:56 - 16:56
is not because of other people
  • 16:56 - 16:58
    - the disenfranchisement is
  • 16:58 - 17:00
    institutionalized... and because of that
  • 17:00 - 17:02
we're actually on the same side
  • 17:02 - 17:03
of this struggle, but their privilege
  • 17:03 - 17:05
blinds them from being able to
  • 17:05 - 17:06
    recognize that.
  • 17:06 - 17:08
    And the crumbs of power
  • 17:08 - 17:09
    that are given to them....
  • 17:09 - 17:10
    they want to maintain.
  • 17:10 - 17:12
    So they're either gonna realize
  • 17:12 - 17:14
they have that privilege, and join
  • 17:14 - 17:15
    the right side of history....
  • 17:15 - 17:16
    or we're take that privilege.
  • 17:16 - 17:18
Those are the only two outcomes.
  • 17:18 - 17:20
Much of the far-right in the US
  • 17:20 - 17:21
    seem to be active supporters
  • 17:21 - 17:22
    of Donald Trump.
  • 17:22 - 17:23
Why do you think this is?
  • 17:23 - 17:25
And what implications do you think
  • 17:25 - 17:26
that this will have in terms of
  • 17:26 - 17:28
    the upcoming RNC in Cleveland
  • 17:28 - 17:29
and the political climate in the US
  • 17:29 - 17:30
    more generally?
  • 17:30 - 17:32
Well I've listened to Heimbach's podcast
  • 17:32 - 17:34
and he sort of views Trump
  • 17:34 - 17:37
    - he says.. if Trump doesn't take his
  • 17:37 - 17:39
    rightful place as President of
  • 17:39 - 17:40
    the United States,
  • 17:40 - 17:41
then Trump should start his own
  • 17:41 - 17:43
    political party, in which
  • 17:43 - 17:44
    the Traditionalist Workers Party,
  • 17:44 - 17:46
and all the other white supremacist
  • 17:46 - 17:47
    groups can get behind Trump,
  • 17:47 - 17:49
    and push their agenda.
  • 17:49 - 17:52
So they see Trump as being sort of like
  • 17:52 - 17:55
the electoral head of all of these other
  • 17:55 - 17:56
    white supremacist groups.
  • 17:56 - 17:59
Now, in terms of how it will affect
  • 17:59 - 18:01
the RNC - it's difficult to say.
  • 18:01 - 18:02
    The people from the Traditionalist
  • 18:02 - 18:03
    Workers Party are saying that
  • 18:03 - 18:05
    they're gonna do "security"
  • 18:05 - 18:07
    for the RNC this year.
  • 18:07 - 18:09
    What happened in Sacramento
  • 18:09 - 18:10
is going to set a precedent for
  • 18:10 - 18:13
    how those interactions are gonna
  • 18:13 - 18:15
go down, but it really depends
  • 18:15 - 18:17
    on what the anti-fascist forces
  • 18:17 - 18:19
    - and anti-racist forces -
  • 18:19 - 18:20
    look like in Cleveland.
  • 18:20 - 18:21
We already know what the Traditionalist
  • 18:21 - 18:22
Workers Party and all these other
  • 18:22 - 18:25
racist groups - what they're capable of,
  • 18:25 - 18:27
and what they're gonna do based on
  • 18:27 - 18:28
    what happened in Sacramento.
  • 18:28 - 18:30
    The level of potential violence
  • 18:30 - 18:31
    has escalated.
  • 18:31 - 18:33
    We're beginning to see, like,
  • 18:33 - 18:36
    outright confrontation with weapons
  • 18:36 - 18:38
    - with bladed weapons - the real sort of
  • 18:38 - 18:41
    disregard for people's safety.
  • 18:41 - 18:43
That's really - it makes the spectrum
  • 18:43 - 18:44
    of what these demonstrations
  • 18:44 - 18:46
    will look like even larger.
  • 18:46 - 18:48
I've even seen on some of their
  • 18:48 - 18:50
    forums and websites, they're criticizing
  • 18:50 - 18:51
    themselves for just bringing
  • 18:51 - 18:53
    bladed weapons.
  • 18:53 - 18:54
They're like, "if this confrontation had
  • 18:54 - 18:56
happened and we had prepared properly,
